Nat rode her bike to the hospital and the entire time there she thought about the night it happened. How EJ was drunk and told everyone she was gorgeous. She couldn't stop thinking what might have happened if she had stopped her fiance from getting too drunk. Emma could have been alright. They could have been married by now, instead Emma Jane Hurt was in the hospital in a come.
Natalie arrived at the hospital and went to Emma's room. Outside her room her mother sat crying. Natalie's heart sank. It happened. It finally happened. Emma was gone.
Nat was frozen in place. Her grief visible on her face. Mrs. Hurt looked up at Nat and was smiling. What?! Why was she smiling? Her daughter just died!
"Oh, Natalie. She opened her eyes." Her mother said, clearly seeing the worried expression on her face. Natalie was filled with joy.
"She is awake?"
"Well, no, but her eyes are opened and she is slowly showing response, so she is waking up."
"Can I see her?"
Mrs. Hurt nodded.
Nat went into Emma's room and saw EJ sitting up, leaning on the wall with her head propped up. He eyes looking around in a daze as if she was seeing, but couldn't process any of it. Natalie walked up to her.
"Emma Jane?" EJ looked at her, but didn't at the same time. She just turned her head towards the sound of the noise. "Its me, Nat. I don't know if you can see me or even understand me, but I want to tell you I love you." She said calmly, taking EJ's hand. Emma flinched at the first touch, but then relaxed, as if she recognized the feeling of her hand. As if it was the one familiar thing out of all this crazy mess.
Nat felt tears rolling down her eyes. "Emma..."
Emma blinked her eyes a few times like she was trying to see clearer. She lifted her hand up and touched Natalie's face like a blind person. Emma Jane's hand dropped and face went blank as if she had given up trying to focus, that or she couldn't anymore. Natalie was upset, but there was one thing for sure, Emma was waking up.
