Chapter 1
Her feet were cold on the wooden board. Eyes pierced into her skin and she did not know where to look. In the end she decided to look ahead into the horizon.
'That child, is your destination,' spoke one of the Elders. Kiko eyes did not move. She did not want to look at him. Or any of the villagers for that matter.
This was her end but only in this world. This cruel, cruel world. She forced her heart to hope for the reality of the Other World, that she was supposedly being sent to. As children they were told of this Other World. They were told of the powers of the gods, their magnificence, their beauty, their grace. It made them seek such a place but they did not. You see they were also told of the gods' wrath, their merciless punishments, their wars, their bloodshed.
That was why she was here. That was why she was Chosen. She was not special, she was not wanted. She was useless and this was her being useful as put by her grandmother. That was just her excuse. She was being sold by her own blood in exchange for only a few dozen gold coins. That was exactly how much her life was worth. She was after all an illegitimate child of dead parents.
Zoning back, she looked around. The villagers big and small were all lined up on the shore. Some young children jumped to get a good look at the girl who was being sacrificed. It made Kiko uncomfortable. She grabbed hold of her white long gown with her sweaty palms.
'Go ahead, ' it was another Elder. Her wrinkled hands guided Kiko toward the newly built boat. It was decorated with white water lilies. They say it would please the Watergod.
She pulled her thin cotton skirt up to her knees to ease herself onto the furnished boat. This earned her snickers from the women on the sidelines. She did not care anymore. She swiftly got into the small boat without any hesitation. It was only big enough only to carry one.
With a little rock of the boat she was let go. The boat moved forward on its own accord. Her hands automatically grabbed onto the sides of the floating object for balance. She was scared of drowning. She mentally banged her head. How was it that she just obliged to her grandmother's words? How was it that she did not run away? Why was she fine with such carelessness of her life? Why has she accepted being a sacriface?
Then it slowly came back to her. It was her life back at the village. She remembered all those times she was treated like an outcast that she knew she definitely was. How the people just steered clear wherever she walked like she was plague. Untouchable. A disease.
A tear travelled down her recently cleaned cheeks. Her slender finger wiped it off quickly. She thought her tears ran out already but they just kept falling. Her fingers weren't fast enough for her waterworks.
The sky darkened as grey clouds gathered. She heard thunder and immediately froze. It was the sound of the gods she was once told. It was her first time. It was time for the scene one could only dream about.
Slowly water dripped from the sky. They came as drops and made a tingling sound on the water she floated on. The sound was unfamiliar to her ears but it was the most beautiful music. Slowly she was engulfed into a deadly storm.
The boat began to rock hastily and her body tensed. Her arms and limbs shook of fear knowing her end but her heart was calm. Her breathing was long, taking in the iron in the air.
The boat continued to rock. Lightning flashed. The world shook and her body swayed. She leaned on the side. Waves crashed into one side of the boat. The boat tilted to the waters bringing her nose closer to the surface of the sea. She closed her eyes ready for the impact.
The water hit her face with a sharp sting. The cold current embraced her figure and took her in the currents.
Farewell world. You've tolerated me when no one could.
I don't know if this story is worth continuing. I'm not asking for a vote. Maybe I am but that's kinda how I'd know if I should continue.
