#18: Staying In Band

"'Did you ever play an instrument in band?' Yeah. In sixth grade I played trumpet." *sighs* "Until I got braces, that is. It was toward the end of sixth grade and I had to stop. Then, my band teacher, Mr. Mata, he was the best teacher I ever had, hands down. He was like, 'hey, maybe you should try a different instrument,' and before I went to drums, he had me try guitar, but he really meant bass guitar, because there was no fucking guitar in symphonic band so you play a bass guitar. And I though he meant acoustic guitar, so when I showed up with one, the whole class just laughed at me. He came over to me and he was like 'what are you doing?' I was like 'uh, you said I could play guitar...' 'Bass guitar,' he corrected me, and the whole class just like starting erupting in laughter, like 'you fucking idiot, you're so stupid!' I just turned bright red. I stayed silent for the rest of the day. It killed me. I was like 'oh my god, I'm such an idiot.' Then I went back to class, I didn't have any instrument, and I was like 'I fucking quit. I can't do band, I don't want to do this anymore,' That was embarrassing for me, and I though I liked band, but I didn't think I could handle the pressure. What a little pussy I was. So Mr. Mata was like, 'alright, fine, just hold off, and finally I decided on coming back and playing drums the rest of middle school in jazz band also. Not quitting band was the best thing I've done for me, just for my confidence and my self respect, which I didn't have in sixth grade. It was an interesting time."
