Chapter 4
Macy stared up in fear at the large white stoned mansion that stood before her. His house was eerily similar to Cameron's, except Cam's was much more cleanly while his was run down and obviously needed to be destroyed.
Even though she was wearing a long sleeved shirt and Cam's jacket, she was still cold. The only way she could actually feel warm was if Cameron was close to her. Just thinking about him caused her to involuntarily shiver and she wrapped her arms around her in hopes it would stop her shivering.
"Still cold?" Cam asked as he pulled into the driveway of the mansion. Adjusting the temperature of the car, Cameron glanced at his timid mate and saw her lips in a tight line. She had been very quiet since they had left the hospital and he was quite worried about her.
When she didn't answer him, he looked over and saw her staring up in awe and fear at his home. As he parked the car, he reached over and grasped one of her hands. Macy immediately jumped, quickly turning to look at Cam in fear that he was him, the man who had taken her, but when she saw those trustworthy blue eyes, she instantly relaxed.
"I'm fine." Was her quiet reply. Giving her hand a soft reassuring squeeze, Cameron took a deep breath. He knew she wasn't 'fine'.
"Macy, I can see it in your eyes. What's bothering you?" He asked, genuinely concerned about her. This surprised Macy more than it probably should have, but he was her rescuer. He deserved to know exactly what had happened.
"C-can we go s-see the sunflowers?" She asked shyly, her voice still as soft as a rose petal. Cam was disappointed she wouldn't talk about her past, but Macy was still recovering from malnutrition and abuse so whatever had happened before, Cam concluded, probably was something she either didn't trust him with or she wasn't ready to share. Giving her a sweet smile, Cam nodded and opened his door.
"Of course." Macy had already opened her door when Cam was there, watching her slow movements. Sometimes it hurt Macy's joints to move and she was already tired just from sitting in the car. Taking her hand in his, Cam saw the exhaustion on her face.
"We'll take a quick look at the sunflowers before heading back and getting you some food, okay?" Cam said, his thumb smoothing over the back of her hand. Macy nodded and jumped slightly at the loud noise the car door made as Cam closed it. He gave a shy smile and Macy couldn't help but smile back. It warmed his heart to see a smile on her face. It was a faint one, but a smile nonetheless.
It was mid October and the air was beginning to chill. It was about five o'clock in the afternoon and a brisk breeze had settled in. Even though Macy was wearing a long sleeve and Cam's large jacket, she was still freezing. Even with his hand in her's, it wasn't enough. Her teeth chattered together and her nose was cold.
Cam could feel her shivering and hear her teeth chattering. He knew the only was she was ever going to be truly warm was if he put his arm around her. But what if she didn't want that? What if whatever had abused her had hurt her sexually as well? The thought angered Cameron and his wolf. Macy was very beautiful and he could see how someone could easily take advantage of her, but that wasn't what Cam wanted to do. He wanted to help her, to help her recover.
When Cam took his hand away from Macy's, Macy nearly freaked out, that is until he wrapped his arm around her shoulders and tucked her perfectly under his arm and into his side. Instantly she was warm and his scent washed over her, easing her nerves.
"Okay?" Cam asked softly, checking with her to see if she was alright with the position, and Macy nodded as she buried her head into the warmth of his chest. Cam couldn't help but smile. Squeezing her arm, Macy looked up and felt her jaw drop at the sight.
The greenhouse was amazing. It was huge, at least two stories and she could see the yellow sunflowers inside. This view was certainly one of the most beautiful views she could ever remember. Being locked up in that house for three years didn't have a whole lot of views, unless you count views of concrete walls as a view.
"Do you like it?" Cam asked softly and Macy barley heard him. She started towards the door, placing her hand on the doorknob, she turned it and stepped into the warmth of the greenhouse. She was instantly hit with the scent of the sunflowers and it was a much better scent than antiseptic. She heard Cam behind her and she turned around to face him. That's when she finally took an assessment of him.
His dark brown hair fell into his sapphire blue eyes. His skin was the perfect shade of tan and it made Macy a little jealous. He was built with broad shoulders and a strong chest and the way he carried himself screamed power and maybe was even a little attractive to her. Macy's cheeks instantly flushed at the thought of him and she turned away, walking towards a table with five sunflowers.
"They're beautiful." She whispered, her fingers tracing over the petals. Cam stood off at a distance, leaning against the door frame as Macy went from table to table, examining each flower. He smiled in spite of himself. She was so cute he just wanted to pick her and swing her around before kissing those lips of her's. Cam took a deep breath and shook his head.
Slow and steady. We don't want to scare her, he told himself over and over. When Macy approached him, she seemed to have a new color to her cheeks. Her hazel eyes glowed with amazement. He smiled and she smiled in return.
"Are you ready?" He asked, holding his hand out to her. Macy nodded and placed her cool hand in his, loving how warm he was. He lead her away from the greenhouse, a place Macy felt could be her new safe haven, and took her to the large mansion.
"My family and friends are home. I want you to meet them." He said and he swore he saw a flash of panic in her eyes. When she didn't say anything, he stopped and turned to her. She looked up at him with wide, scared eyes and he gave her a reassuring smile as he squeezed her hand.
"It's okay. They're nice and if you feel uncomfortable about anything, tell me, and we can do something else, okay?" Macy nodded and she sucked in a soft breath as he stepped closer and lifted her chin so that they were looking into each others eyes. She could feel his strong gaze all the way down to her toes.
"Okay?" He asked again, softly.
"Okay." Was her quiet reply and Cam smiled as he lead her towards a door. It was located on a beautiful deck, covered with leafs. A deck table and chairs were present and the glass table top was covered in leaves. Cam glanced back at his timid mate and saw her looking around curiously. He took a breath and opened the door, the scent of spices and pumpkin present in the air.
Macy bit her lip and felt her face pale with the amount of people in the house. They entered into the kitchen and beyond the kitchen was the living room. She could hear even more people in there. The people in the kitchen were mainly women and a few girls around her age. Cam tugged her in and closed the door behind her. His hand held her's tightly and she was grateful he was there.
"Hello Cameron. Who's this?" A voice asked and Macy looked over to see a woman drying her hands on a towel. She smiled at Macy. It was genuine and Macy felt as if this woman was a mother figure. She had short dark brown hair and kind light blue eyes.
"Mom this is Macy, Macy this is my mother, Amy." Cam introduced and Amy's face lit up like a candle. Amy came forward quite quickly, causing a skittish Macy to cling tighter to Cam's arm. Amy, sensing the girls timid nature, backed off and sent her son a silent message through the pack link.
'Is she alright?' Cam could feel other members tune in and it was good thing too. He didn't want to repeat himself numerous times.
'Macy is very shy of new people. It's been obvious that she's been through a lot, mentally, emotionally, and physically. So if you could, just be kind from a distance. Please.' He got numerous agreements from the pack members. Even the females in the kitchen. They all smiled at Macy in a friendly way.
"It's very nice to meet you, Macy." Amy said and Macy gave a quick smile. When she was with him, there was other girls. Plenty of them too. They all were rude and mean to Macy. Only because she was his favorite.
"This is Clare, my best friend's sister. You'll meet him later." Cam introduced. The girl named Clare had blonde hair tied into a ponytail and brown eyes. She was very pretty and Macy quickly felt subconscious of her features. Clare smiled at Macy and decided she was going to be her friend one way or another.
Cam continued to introduce the other females of the room, naming them as aunts and cousins. Suddenly, there was a roar of cheering from the living room that caused Macy to jump and the females to groan.
"Football." Cam said to Macy, his hand squeezing her's. Macy recalled what football was from her childhood. Her older brothers use to play it all the time and were quite good at it. At the thought of her family, her throat closed up and her eyes burned with unshead tears. Cam, noticing her sadness, wanted to know why one word like 'football' could bring her to tears. He excused himself and Macy from the others and brought her to a set of stairs.
"I want to show you something." He said and Macy nodded. He hadn't let go of her hand yet and she didn't mind. Cam lead her up the stairs and took her down a dimly lit hallway. It was empty.
"My room." He paused outside a door and gestured for Macy to open it. Confused, she did, and as they walked in she was quite impressed.
The walls were a deep blue, reminding Macy of Cam's eyes right away. His bed was against the wall, set in the middle. The sheets were a light blue and went well with the curtains and color of the walls. There was a set of French doors leading out to a porch with a beautiful view of the forest behind his house. But what really caught Macy's attention was the grand piano set in the corner.
It was so beautiful, Macy couldn't help but go over to it and trace her fingers over the keys. Her grandmother use to have a piano like this. It had been Macy's inheritance when she died. It had been six years since Macy had even touched a piano.
She took a seat on the bench and Cam sat down beside her. Her fingers poised over the keys, wanting to play, but not knowing if she could anymore.
"Can you play?" He asked and Macy swallowed.
"I haven't in a long time." She replied and dropped her hands into her lap. Cam smiled and bumped her shoulder softly with his till she was looking at him.
"Would you like a refresher course?" And the smile that came across her face in that moment made Cameron believe she would recover with no scars left behind.
