Chapter 16
The conference hall was a huge room with seats seating 500. Macy looked around in awe. As they walked to the front, Cameron's shoes caused an echo to sound even though there at to be at least 300 people in the room. As they neared the stage, Macy became suddenly nervous. At first, she wasn't sure if she could even be in the same room as everyone else, seeing as how she didn't exactly fit in, but now she was sure of it.
Mostly everyone in the room was male, the fighters, Macy realized. A few women were scattered about. Macy caught sight of Lillian and Willa and they waved and grinned at their friend. Macy, seeing them and their enthusiastic faces, smiled and waved back, feeling a little better. But it soon diminished as her and Cameron walked on stage. Everyone took a seat as Cameron let go of her hand, shooting her a reassuring smile before taking the podium.
"Good evening everyone," he started, as if he had done this numerous times before. Everyone bowed their head respectfully, a few muttering "Alpha". Cameron's eyes scanned his audience. "As you all know, I have recently found my mate." A small smile came across his face as everyone smiled and clapped, the sound echoing the thundering applause.
"Thank you, everyone. We should be celebrating, but it seems other matters have come to surface that we must deal with," he looked over his shoulder at Macy who gave a light smile. Even though she wasn't speaking, she could feel everyone looking at her, intrigued by the new member.
"Her name is Macy and she use to belong to Xavier." A harsh round of growls and exclaims sounded, echoing off the walls. Macy swallowed hard. It was a good thing they didn't like Xavier either, right? At this point, Macy was just worried about what she was going to say to them. She knew she was going to have to say something to them. They were going to be fighting for her. They at least deserved to know her side of the story.
"Xavier had her parents kill six years ago, her entire family killed only because they wouldn't submit to his power. As a prize, he took Macy..." Cameron seemed to struggle. He hated what Xavier did to his mate. But his members needed to know the aspect of the situation. He looked over his shoulder, glancing at his mate who stood stock still, her eyes burning into his. He could see the flashes of pain and the terror in her eyes. He took a deep breath and turned back to his pack, seeing their worried expressions.
"As a prize, he took Macy as his personal slave." Shouts of anger filled the air and the room was then thundering with angry shouts for Xavier's extermination. Macy's heart soared. They were upset! A motive for a fight had ensued. For Xavier's existence to finally be demolished.
"A few days ago, he threw her out into the cold after beating her senseless. Luckily, I found her before other rogues could get to her. But, seeing as how Xavier now knows that Macy is my mate, he wants her back,"
"Well it's a damn shame he kicked her out then, isn't it?" Willa shouted and everyone shouted their agreement. Macy felt a grateful smile come across her face as Willa met her gaze, giving her a wink and a smile. Cameron was smiling.
"He made me a proposition. That I had three days to decide between her and my pack or war would begin. I believe the decision is pretty clear." Cameron looked over his shoulder and grinned at Macy as shouts of supporters filled the room.
"But that isn't exactly fair to us, now is it?" Cameron turned back around, his eyes landing on a very familiar face. Once upon a time ago, he would have considered this girl to be a close friend, but now was nothing but a power hungry she-wolf. Her name was Shea. She was standing from her seat, her arms crossed over her chest. Even though Cameron didn't like the fact that she had spoken out against the cause, he had to let her speak. It was just was way he ran he his pack.
"How is it not fair, Shea? We finally get to see Alpha Cameron get a mate!" Someone said and voices of agreement sounded. A smug smile came across Shea's face as she turned her gaze up to Cameron.
"I certainly don't want to fight a war that has nothing to do my welfare. I mean, it isn't fair to us that we have to fight a war that has nothing to do with us pack members. Sure, it isn't her fault her parents were killed by Xavier's hand or the fact that she was his personal slave. But it also isn't our responsibility to fight for something that we didn't even get a choice in." Some people nodded and panic filled Macy's chest. She was loosing them! Macy made her way to the podium, Cameron surprised that she had come forward.
"Shea, isn't it?" Macy was surprised her voice wasn't shaky like she felt. Shea raised an eyebrow at the girl who suddenly appeared.
"Yes, it is." Macy nodded and looked about the crowd, spotting Lillian and Willa instantly. They gave her reassuring smiled and thumbs up. Giving Macy their support. Macy heart raced as an idea came to her mind. It was a last resort. If this girl, Shea, had given enough reason not to fight for the cause, then Macy would have to act. Even if she didn't want to.
"I know none of you know me. I know that I just appeared suddenly and that you now have to fight a war you don't have anything in common with," she took a deep breath and glanced at Cameron who gave her a reassuring smile. "But, I can assure you that everything will be fine in the end."
"And how can you assure us of something like that? We have family's that need us. We have siblings and children who need their brothers and sisters and parents. And if we fight this war, then we would loose precious lives. Lives that mean much more to others than yours." Macy heard Cameron's growl and could see the angry glares Willa and Lillian and a few others were giving. Cameron stepped forward, but Macy pushed a hand against his chest, forcing him back.
"You're right. Fighting this war would loose lives," her eyes scanned the audience and saw a lot of members questioning where they lied. Her idea swimmed in her head, pressuring her to say it, to leave and have those lives spared. "But that's why we are having this meeting. So we can see where our members lie." Shea laughed and shook her head.
"You make it sound as if you're already Luna, well news flash, you're not." Macy had never really been angry before, but she could feel the annoyance and irritation rising in her bloodstream. Cameron growled.
"That's enough, Shea." He snapped and Shea looked a little hurt.
"I'm just speaking my mind, like you encourage us to do. Is it the fact that I might be right that you don't like hearing?" Cameron narrowed his eyes at her and she fought a smug smile. She turned her gaze back on Macy. "You're not my Luna. You don't have the right to tell me what I can and can't do. So, for the fact that you're not my Luna no that you have no power over me, I will not fight for you." Macy felt despair fill her chest as a few more shouts of agreement filled the air. The loyal members questioned the not so loyal ones and angry bickering ensued. Cameron ran hand after hand through his hair as he talked fervently with Riley.
Her idea hit her like a freight train and she felt a little breathless. She couldn't! It would break his heart! But it was the only way. Not only was she loosing loyal members, she was sure the main topic was the loss of innocent lives that would have been unnecessarily lost.
"Everyone!" She shouted, her hands balling into fists. Cameron was surprised to hear her so loud. When everyone's eyes was on her, her eyes burned with tears. She took a deep breath. "In the effect that innocent lives would be lost unnecessarily, I have come to the decision to," her let out a shaky breath, her eyes closing as she spoke the words she didn't want to say. "I have come to the decision to reject Cameron as my mate and return to Xavier's compound as soon as possible." At first it was silent, her voice echoing, before chaos erupted. Shea's eyes filled with surprise then fear.
Macy gasped she was suddenly spun around, her heart breaking at the terror in Cameron's dark blue eyes. His hands gripped her arms tightly, his eye searching her face as Riley tired to calm everyone down.
"Macy," he gasped, his eyes showing his heart break. Her eyes filled with tears and she touched his cheek.
"I'm sorry." She whispered.
"No! No! I will not let this happen!" Willa shouted loudly and everyone became quiet. As Macy met her gaze, she noticed that only one person was missing. Shea.
"I don't care if I loose my life! I don't care if I never get to see my family again, but knowing that I fought for you, Macy, would make me the happiest person in the world," sadness filled her eyes. "When we talked earlier today, I wasn't exactly being truthful. I did find my mate only for him to reject me at first sight," Macy felt her tears fall as Willa took a deep breath, her sister rubbing her back. "So please. Don't reject Alpha Cameron. He deserves someone as special as you and I won't let you reject him because of Xavier." It was silent, a few other nodding their heads. Macy turned her gaze on Cameron to see his face pale, his eyes closed, and his cheeks wet with tears. It was one of the most heartbreaking sight she had ever seen and she choked on a sob.
"I'll fight for you Macy!"
"And I too!"
"Me too!"
"Count me in!" Macy looked out to the pack to see them joining together, pumping their fists in the air. Macy turned to Cameron who had his eyes open and was staring at her with pain filled eyes.
"Take him back, Macy, before the rejection is permanent." Willa said and Macy threw her arms around his neck.
"I'm so sorry, Cam. I take you back, I won't ever reject you." Cameron's arms wound around her waist, burring his head into her neck.
"We need to talk." She pulled away and looked at him. He looked severely hurt. Suddenly, he grabbed her chin and kissed her, causing shouts of happiness to come from the members. When he pulled away, he was smiling. She hugged him tightly around his neck, breathing in his familiar scent.
Thirty minutes later, the couple was making their way to their room. People had come and shaken their hands, and telling them congratulations. Macy had personally thanked Willa. Now it was one less worry to think about. About wether or nothing the members would fight for her or not. When the couple entered the room, Cameron closed the door after them and Macy stood nervously in the middle of the room. When Cameron met her gaze, she said,
"I know your mad-" he shook his head, cutting her off, walking towards her.
"I'm not mad," his eyes burned into hers. "I'm hurt." He walked past her and her heart ached.
"I can explain, Cam." He sighed and nodded.
"I know you can. And I'm trying to understand why you would make such a decision without telling me." He turned to her, his eyes burning with pain so intense, she could feel it deep within her soul.
"It was a last resort. I would have never done it if I knew the members were willing to fight."
"I know, but you could have still talked to me about it. That way I knew it was coming," he pinched the bridge of his nose. "You scared the living hell out of me, Macy. I thought you were serious."
"I wasn't bluffing, Cameron." She whispered and his eyes shot open, staring at her.
"W-what?"
"I wasn't bluffing. I knew full well the consequences and I was willing to take those risks. Listen, I barley know these people and I know their lives matter more than mine." His eyes darkened and he crossed the room towards her.
"Don't you say that."
"But it's true, Cameron! What Shea said was true. Those people do have families who mean everything to them and if they died because of me, I would never forgive myself. And those lives do mean more than mine. Those people have friends, family. And I don't have either." She gasped as he grabbed her arms, staring intently into her eyes.
"You have me. And Willa and Lillian and Claire and Riley. You've never had friends or a family, Macy, but that all changes now. You've always been so selfless and now it's time to think of yourself and I'm going to help you." Her eyes filled with tears.
"Cam, I.." She trailed off, to overwhelmed by emotion to speak. Cameron smiled and wrapped his arms around her, bringing her to his chest.
"It'll be okay. I promise." He kissed the top of her head as she buried her head into his shirt. He pulled her away, leaning down and pressing a soft kiss to her lips.
"But please promise me you'll never scare me like that again and that you'll tell me everything your thinking or planning on doing." She nodded.
"I promise." He smiled and kissed her again. It was a quick soft kiss, for all he needed was to smell her scent to know that she was truly not going anywhere. She giggled as he picked her up, buring his head into her hair, breathing in her beautiful intoxicating scent. She felt the softness of the bed underneath her and he pulled away, gazing lovingly into her eyes. Her hands traced the side of his face, feeling the light stubble underneath her fingertips.
Three words played on the tip of his tongue and he debated wether or not to tell her. He was having that problem lately. Of wether or not to spill the words I love you to the girl who meant more than air to him. Instead of telling her, he kissed her, loving how her hands were drawn directly to his hair. He wanted to tell her, but was afraid to it was too soon. But he was also afraid that an opportunity like that would never come again. She sighed against his lips.
"Cameron," he pulled away, resting his head against hers. His eyes burned into hers, getting lost in the beautiful hazel of her eyes.
"I'm sorry, about rej-" he pressed a finger to her lips, silencing her.
"Shh, sweetheart. Don't speak." And he kissed her again, feeling her hands leave his hair and press against his shoulders.
"No, listen," she breathed and he looked at her. "I really am sorry. About everything. I should have told you, but I knew you would have never let me go through with it." She was right, of course, Cameron knew.
"It's alright, sweetheart. I'm not mad." Her eyes softened.
"But you're hurt." He smiled and shook his head.
"Not anymore." She smiled and leaned into him as he pressed his lips against her's.
