Chapter Forty-One: How Could You?

You breathed deeply as you walked down the stairs.
"What's he going to say?"
"Will he like it?"
All these questions ran through your head. You wanted to stop and think for a moment but you realized that both (R/N) and Mark could see you. You were also surprised that you couldn't hear (R/N) fangirling upon seeing who was taking you out for a date.

You looked directly at Mark. He was dressed in a tuxedo that you thought that he looked extremely sexy in. His reaction to what you were wearing involved eyes going wide and his jaw dropping. You saw (R/N) snickering at the reaction.
"(Y/N)." He managed to muster, taking your hand once you reached the bottom of the stairs. "You look...."
You smiled as you waited for him to finish the sentence.
"Absolutely beautiful."
You felt yourself blushing as you said, "Really? I was afraid that you weren't going to like it."
"I don't like it." He said. You felt your heart stop when he said that. But you resisted to breathe a sigh of relief when he added, "I love it."
"And I love what you're wearing." You said.
"What? This ol' thing?" He said, looking down at the tux that he was wearing. He had let go of your hand.
"Yeah." You said.
"Well, you two lovebirds have fun." (R/N) said as she wen over to the staircase. Teasingly she added, "Have her back by curfew, Mark."
"No promises." He said, smiling. You listened to her footsteps as she ran up the stairs.
"Shall we then?" He asked as soon as you couldn't hear (R/N)'s footsteps anymore. He held out his arm.
"Of course." You said, linking your arm with his.
You both walked out of the building together, across campus, and out to Mark's car. He reached over to the door and opened it for you. You smiled as you stepped inside. He closed the door behind you. You watched as he walked to the driver's side of the car and got in.
"So, what are we doing tonight?" You asked.
"I told you before that it was a surprise." He said as he began to drive.
You rolled your eyes and said, "Really? You still can't tell me?"
"Nope." He said.
A few moments of silence passed before you said, "How are you doing?"
"Fine." He said. "How are you doing?"
"Fine." You replied. But you thought that he would get into how he was battling his addiction. You wanted to be subtle with it at first but you ultimately decided to just flat out mention it, "How's battling your addiction going?"
He was silent. He refused to acknowledge that you even asked that in the first place.
"Mark?" You asked, making sure that he actually heard what you said.
"Oh. That." He muttered. "You must not have seen the latest video then."
"Oh God." You said. "What the hell did you do?"
"You don't need to know."
"Of course I need to know! Because I actually give a shit about you."
"Fine! I may or may not have done an episode of Drunk Minecraft with Bob and Wade the other day."
"You did not-" You said upon hearing that. You shook your head and added, "How could you? You promised me that if I stopped, you'd stop! And then you go behind my back and do this!"
"I'm sorry!" He said. "It's just....whenever I drink, I forget about everything. I forget that I miss my mom and brother, I forget everything that's on my mind and I'm happy. Isn't that how you felt every time that you injected yourself?"
"Yes." You admitted, not wanting to lie. "But a certain someone told me that I'm going to kill myself if I continue."
He sighed, knowing that you were throwing his own words back at him.
"I'm sorry, okay?" He said. "If it makes you feel any better, I felt like shit the next day."
"Well, you should have." You said.
Just then, your phone buzzed with a text from (R/N). You sighed as you read it.
"I know that you're on your date right now but I wanted to tell you this before I forget. Jet didn't commit suicide. He was murdered."
"What?" You said aloud out of pure shock. You didn't realize that you said that until the words came out of your mouth.
"What?" Mark asked out of curiosity. "What happened?"
"Nothing." You said, putting your phone back in your pocket. "Nothing at all."
"You're lying." He said. "Don't hide stuff from me (Y/N)."
"I'm not telling you because I'm pissed at you." You said.
"Fine." He said. He pulled into the parking lot of some restaurant. You weren't paying attention when the car turned so you didn't actually know what restaurant it was. "You have a fair point. Now, can we talk about this later and just have a nice date?"
You thought about it for a few moments. This would most likely be the last time that you see Mark for a very long times. Besides, the original point of this date was to have a good time with him.
"Sure." You decided. "But don't think that we aren't going to discuss this later."
"Yeah. I know." He said, getting out of the car. You were about to open the door when he opened it for you and held out his hand. You took it and he pulled you out of the car, shutting the door behind you.
