Chapter 17:

"You ready?" I asked Aiden while I stood in the doorway, watching him and Jessa play. He was on the floor and Jessa had tackled him. He was laughing hysterically at how serious she was as she tried to pin him down.

He looked up at me and leaned up on his elbows. Jessa elbowed him in the stomach and he fell back, grabbing his side where her pokey little arm bone hit him. She dove on him again. I crossed the room and picked her up. She was squirming and fighting me, she was strong and I wasn't going to be able to hold her like this much longer.

Aiden popped up off the floor and she reached out for him again. I didn't exist if Aiden was around. She would rather play with him than pay any attention to me. I could have walked out of the room and she would have never even noticed. He grabbed her from my arms quickly. Jessa went limp against his chest and looked back at me, showing me that she won this round. She looked just like Ezra did when she knew she had gotten her way.

"Hey, Jess." Aiden whispered into her hair. "Want to get some pancakes and bacon?"

Jessa rocked back and forth and pumped her legs. Her eyes were wide and she looked at him smiling. She grabbed his shirt and shook him as she danced in his arms. He did a funky little dance right along with her.

"I want bacon, Unca Den. BACON!" She screamed, pulling his face to hers.

These two were absolutely ridiculous. It was like having two toddlers.

I grabbed her little pea coat and placed it over her as Aiden tried to help me hold her still. After ten minutes of struggling, we had her in my car and she was singing with the princesses on my radio. Aiden climbed into the passenger seat and started singing along loudly with her. I couldn't believe he knew all the lyrics to the songs.

Jessa had trained him well.

We decided on the local pancake house a few miles away. Aiden was talking about how much bacon he planned on eating and asked Jessa if she could eat more bacon than he could.

"BACON!" She screamed and Aiden began screaming bacon with her while drumming against my dashboard. They were still chanting bacon when I pulled up to the restaurant.

I got out of the car and unbuckled Jessa. She grabbed my hand and then wanted Aiden to hold the other one so she could swing. We played the one, two, three, swing game as we got near the entrance. We walked into the restaurant. It was pretty busy. It was Saturday, so I wasn't too surprised we had to wait a bit. We patiently stood in line, waiting for our turn to be seated.

Jessa fidgeted and danced between Aiden and me. She was still singing about bacon as loud as humanly possible. I could kill Aiden for getting her started this morning. Having Aiden around was like giving her candy, five minutes and she was bouncing off the walls.

"Jess, please quiet down and stand still." I pulled her hand a little tighter to try to get her attention. It seemed to have the opposite effect. Jessa started screaming her bacon song. I took a deep breath before kneeling down in front of her to get on her level.

"BACON!" She screamed while sticking her nose to mine and making funny faces at me. I rolled my eyes and tried not to let her see me laugh at her funny little faces. Jessa needed to learn volume control. It was the perfect time to talk to her about it.

"Jess, I know you are excited about eating bacon with Unca Den, but when you are in a restaurant, you need to use your inside voice." I tried to remain calm and get her to focus on what I was saying. She defiantly continued to wiggle and dance. It was hopeless.

"Riley, is that you?" I heard a woman's voice and I looked up in the direction it was coming from. I saw the familiar face of a tall, plump, dark-haired woman. I recognized her immediately and I smiled excitedly when she ran across the dining room. I stood up smiling as she barreled towards me.

"Luanne!" I said as Ezra's Mom pulled me up into a hug. I squeezed her back tightly. She was everything I remembered about her. She was still warm and smelled like freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. She rubbed her hand over the back of my head and then looked down when Jessa broke into another chorus of her bacon song.

She pulled away from me and looked into my eyes before motioning down towards my little musical genius. She was speechless as she stared down at her little granddaughter for the first time. She was glowing.

"Is that?" She choked and covered her mouth with her hands. I nodded at her and smiled. She wiped tears away from her cheeks, trying to collect herself.

"Do you want to meet her?" I asked Luanne. Her hands were trembling from the emotions taking over her body. She looked back and forth between Jessa and me, surprised when I asked.

"Do you mind?" She asked, trying not to get her hopes up.

I knelt back down next to Jessa and pointed up to get her attention. Jessa's eyes followed where I was pointing and her light blue eyes met Luanne's.

"Jessa, this is your... Grandma?" I paused, not sure what to call her. It came out more like a question than a statement. "She is Ezra's Mommy. Can you say hi to her?"

Jessa looked back at me and then looked up at Luanne. I stood back up as Jessa walked over to her and pulled the hem of her shirt. She reached her arms out to Luanne and squeezed her hands, asking her to pick her up. Luanne looked at me exactly like her son did the first time Jessa wanted him to hold her. I smiled back to let her know I was fine with it. She leaned down and picked Jessa up.

"Hi Jessa, I'm so happy to meet you." She squeezed Jessa and tears were pouring down her face. I looked away, letting her have her first moment with her granddaughter. I glanced over at Aiden; he seemed confused and unsure. He had never met Luanne before. His guard went up seeing a stranger holding his favorite little human.

"Aiden, this is Ezra's mom, Luanne." I spoke up, clearing the air. Luanne looked over at Aiden and said it was a pleasure to meet him. Her eyes moved down to look at our hands and her stance relaxed when she didn't see what I thought she might be looking for. Luanne must think Aiden and I were a couple. I wasn't surprised. Most people thought we were until they really got to know us.

"I can't believe we ran into you! Ezra wanted some breakfast this morning, but I didn't want to go. He and Charlie had to convince me. I am so glad they forced me to come." She said, staring at Jessa, who was studying Luanne's face with her hands. Luanne kissed at her little hands every time she brought them close to her mouth.

"Ezwa?" Jessa's eyes grew wide when she heard Ezra's name. "Ezwa Shark!" She screamed loud enough for the whole restaurant to hear and I could see all eyes turn in our direction. I felt Ezra's eyes on me. I knew where he was sitting without even having to turn to look. I wanted to grab Jessa and run out before this got any more uncomfortable.

"Well, I'll be." Charlie's slow honeyed words from across the dining room. I closed my eyes; this was too much. Aiden was looking in the direction of Charlie's voice; his fists were clenched at his sides.

Couldn't we just have one peaceful breakfast?
