XXIV: The First Kicks

Ok I did it enjoy :)

5:45 pm - Annabeth's bedroom
18 weeks and 2 days

"Thalia," Annabeth whined. "What am I gonna wear?"

"You're asking me? That's cute," she remarked. Although, she wasn't wrong. Annabeth and Thalia had completely different styles, and the dark haired girl didn't really enjoy fashion.

"Percy's gonna be here in 40 minutes and I have to get dressed and do my hair and makeup," she complained. Percy was taking her on a date this evening, and he insisted it be a surprise (despite her relentless pestering, of course). She was buzzing with excitement—she found that Percy usually made her feel that way. Just the thought of spending time with him put a smile on her face.

"Call Silena," Thalia suggested. "She knows what she's doing."

Annabeth sighed and grabbed her phone, texting her friend.

Annabeth: hey I need your help

Silena: what do you need?

Annabeth: I'm going on a date and have no idea what to wear

Silena: ooooh Annie's goin on a dateeee

Annabeth: lmao come on I need help

Silena: when's Percy getting you?

Annabeth: 6:30

Silena: I can be there in five

Annabeth: you're my savior

Silena: of course, xx

Annabeth put her phone in her desk. "Silena's coming in five minutes," she told Thalia.

"Cool." Thalia just kept scrolling through her phone, sprawled in Annabeth's bed. She was usually like that.

Quicker than Annabeth thought, there was a knock at the door. She walked down the stairs, answering the door.

"Hey babe!" Silena greeted her, a dazzling grin on her face. Drew stood behind her, her head down as she stared at her phone.

"Hi," Annabeth said, letting them in. "Hi Drew,"

"Oh hi Anna." She still didn't look up from her phone. Instead, just started angrily typing something, her nails tapping against the screen. There was no trying with her, so Annabeth gave up.

"I need your help. Percy's gonna be here soon and I haven't done anything to get ready because I feel like I have nothing to wear," she rambled. She usually did that when she was nervous.

"Okay, calm down," Silena reminded her, leading then up to Annabeth's room. "I'm sure that there's something you can wear because you have great clothes. And you already know that I can work with anything," she added. That was true. Silena could fashion a potato sack to look good.

They made it into her room where Drew took a seat on her bed next to where Thalia was sprawled out. You wouldn't think they'd get along, but their sense of humors weren't too different. And plus, they were both sucked into their phones at the moment.

"Let's see what we're working with here." Silena opened Annabeth's closet.

"I present to you, Annabeth Chase,"

Annabeth walked out of her bathroom, fully dressed in the awesome outfit Silena picked out for her. This girl really could work magic. The sweater was big and fluffy, so it did a good job of hiding Annabeth's belly. She was wearing a pair of her mom's old maternity jeans (which looked brand new) but the sweater covered up the waist band, making them look perfectly normal. And Annabeth's favorite part of the outfit had to be her trench coat. Annabeth enjoyed fashion—not as much as Silena, but a good amount—and this coat was one of the best things she owned. To top it off, her wore black booties with a slight heel. She was dressed for the weather, too—there was going to be light snow, but Annabeth was just excited to be with Percy.

(A/N: ignore the shoes in the picture she's wearing booties)

"Oh, you look so cute!" Drew grinned at Annabeth, examining her outfit. Then her phone dinged and her eyes darted to the screen. She gasped. "She is such a bitch! I cannot believe she just said that!"

No one knew exactly what was going with Drew, but it was definitely something. Every time she tried to explain it to them, her phone made another noise and she was sucked right back into angry typing and calling whoever had texted her some very nice things.

"You look adorable," Thalia said, standing from the bed and looking directly at Annabeth. She was already shorter than the blonde-haired girl, and now Annabeth had on heels, so the gap was greater.

"Thanks," Annabeth said, smiling at her best friend and leaning on her shoulder.

"Shut up," Thalia remarked, but there was no malice behind it. Annabeth smirked. She always teased Thalia about their heights. "Not everyone is a fucking amazon, jeez, Annabeth," she said, making Annabeth laugh.

"Your makeup is great, super subtle but still hot," Drew noticed, walking up to her. Annabeth didn't like heavy makeup, but Silena was really good at drawing attention to the beauty of people's natural features. Annabeth was wearing mascara with a bit of lip gloss, as well as a little bit of blush and highlighter on her cheeks.

Drew stood right in front of Annabeth and played with her hair a little bit, fluffing up the strands. She pulled her hands away when she was satisfied. "Good job, Sil."

"Thanks. I really did do a good job," she said, only half joking.

"Thank you," Annabeth said, hugging her friend. Just then there was a knock at the door.

Silena smirked. "I think that's for you."

Annabeth grinned and rolled her eyes before she went to get the door. She opened it. Percy was standing on her front porch, flowers in his hand. He looked up from his shoes and into her eyes.

"Hey," he breathed, his breath coming out in a white puff from the cold weather.

"Hi." Annabeth's smile stretched from ear to ear.

"I got these for you," Percy said, holing out the flowers a little sheepishly. "I got you daisies because I remembered you said that roses were overrated."

She chuckled. "I did say that, yeah." Her heart fluttered at that. He remembered the little details. "Thank you, they're beautiful." She took them, turning to go put them in the kitchen and letting Percy inside. That was when she noticed her friends creeping at the top of the stairs. "Really?"

"What?" Silena protested. "You expect us not to watch? Its like an adorable romantic movie," she cooed.

"She's not wrong," Drew agreed. Annabeth shook her head.

"'Sup loser," Thalia said, nodding to Percy.

"How's it hanging, Pinecone Face?" The way they teased each other was so similar to how Thalia and Luke used to be, it was strange. She put that thought out of her head. She rarely ever thought about Luke anymore compared how she used to, but sometimes those thoughts just surfaced involuntarily, making her remember things she didn't really want to. She pushed that all away as she put the daisies in a vase, everyone else's conversation drowning out behind her thoughts.

"Alright," Annabeth said, standing back next to Percy. "You ready?"

"Yep." Percy smiled down at her, just looking at her for a little while.

"What?" she asked, not that she was opposed. She could look into Percy eyes forever.

"You're just... so beautiful," he whispered, shaking his head. She smiled even wider, as did he. Now they were both blushing.

"Awww," Drew broke in.

Silena nudged her. "You just killed their moment."

"Sorry," she apologized, shrugging. Percy and Annabeth laughed.

"Okay, we're gonna go, because we don't want to be late for whatever Percy has planned that he still won't tell me," Annabeth said, nudging Percy.

"It's still a surprise, Wise Girl," Percy insisted. He really wouldn't budge.

"Fine. We have to get going but I'll see you guys probably tomorrow, unless you decide to stay in my house without me," she said. It was a pretty normal thing for her friends to be there when she wasn't. They were just that close by now, and they knew better than to make any sort of mess. "I don't really care, but we're gonna leave." Then she led Percy out the door.

She was about to start walking to his car when Percy stopped her. She looked at him, confused.

"I really wanted to kiss you but not in front of them," he said, his voice low. He had pulled her in close, his minty breath warm on her cheeks. Annabeth grinned, cupping his cheek as their lips met.

Kissing Percy was like magic. Every time was as incredible as the first, and yet it was entirely different with each kiss. A different kind of excitement, but still the same euphoria. It was hard to explain.

When they pulled away, both of them were just a little bit out of breath. "They're watching us from the window, aren't they?" Annabeth asked as Percy glanced over her shoulder.

"Yeah," he said. He gave a wave as Annabeth turned to roll her eyes at them. "Let's go."

Friday, December 14th
7:50 pm - The local park's Christmas fair

"I cannot believe you just did that to that kid," Percy laughed.

"What?" Annabeth asked incredulously. "He was being a little twerp to his friends, and he was about to step on my toes. I simply served justice," she argued.

"Yeah you did," Percy decided to agree and they laughed. He thought she looked gorgeous when she smiled. It was hard to believe he had gotten so lucky to be with someone so beautiful.

"Ooh, lets go on the Ferris wheel!" Annabeth's eyes lit up at the sight of it.

Percy chuckled. "Okay, lets go." She grabbed his hand and led him to the ride. They got on line, which, thankfully, wasn't too long.

There were two little boys in front of them, all bundled up in coats and hats, who seemed very excited for the Ferris wheel. Percy and Annabeth smiled at each other as they overheard their conversation. It was really quite adorable. Percy enjoyed kids, and, to be totally honest, was really excited to have his own someday. But also to help Annabeth. They hadn't exactly talked about it—Percy was waiting for the right time, although he had no idea when that would be. But he was set on helping Annabeth raise her baby, if she would let him, of course.

He could only say that with such confidence because... he was falling in love with her. He only recently had realized that this feeling in his chest and the butterflies in his stomach was a little bit more than just a crush. Percy felt such a strong connection with Annabeth, and just the thought of her gave him a stupid smile. She made him laugh harder than anyone he had ever met, and Percy knew a lot of funny people. She was such an incredibly beautiful person, inside and out. It made him want to be better, for her. There wasn't anyone else he would want to be with. It was hard to think about, though, because they were so young. He decided not to confuse himself and just enjoy tonight with Annabeth. He had definitely made the right decision bringing her to the fair.

It was the two little boys' turn to get on the ride. Of course, the attendee was distracted talking to one of their friends, so they didn't notice the boys struggling to get up on the ride. Annabeth walked up, picking up one little boy and sitting him on the ride before Percy helped the other little boy.

Annabeth smiled at the kids. "You guys good?" she asked.

"Yeah!" they agreed excitedly, their little noses red. "Thank you!" they sniffled.

"Have fun guys," Percy said as he and Annabeth stepped down, the attendee finally paying attention and starting the ride.

"Oh my gosh, they were so cute," Annabeth cooed. "It's little things like those that make me really excited to have my baby, you know?"

"Yeah," Percy said, nodding and smiling at her. Watching her with those little boys, he knew that she really was going to be a great mom. Her heart was just so big.

Then it was their turn, and Percy helped Annabeth climb up into the seat before following her. Once they were seated, the ride started moving.

Percy and Annabeth talked all the way up, making conversation and jokes about almost nothing. They could talk about anything together and it would be good conversation.

But when they reached the top, they both stopped talking. Percy looked all around them. They could see everything; the entire park, even probably as far as Annabeth's house, but it was hard to tell in the dark. Still, looking at the scene sprawled beneath them, tiny people and colorful lights, it was incredible.

And yet, the view right next to him was even more amazing.

Annabeth gazed down at the scene, the light from the Ferris wheel lighting up her face and making her look like she was glowing. Her grey eyes caught the light and turned a million different colors. The slight wind blew through her hair and she grinned, her perfect white smile becoming contagious.

She sighed contently, her breath coming out in white puffs. Then she leaned her head on his shoulder. Being huddled so close to her made him feel warm from his head to his toes, despite the freezing weather. He smiled, kissing the top of her head.

They didn't need to say anything. The moment was so prefect without words, and they just enjoyed each other's presence, basking in the comfort.

Then the ride was moving again, and they were coming down. They got off the ride and began walking again, falling into step with each other. They held hands and their arms swung back and forth with their steps.

"That was great," Annabeth said, smiling at the ground.

"Yeah," Percy chuckled. "It was."

"Oh, you wanna play a game?" Annabeth asked, pointing over to the line of booths.

"Yeah, okay," Percy agreed, smiling. They walked to a game.

The booth had stacks of bottles and a basket full of baseballs, which all seemed very old school, but it was perfect.

"If you can knock down all the bottles, you get a teddy bear. $2 a ball," the worker explained.

Percy handed the guy four dollars to start with. Annabeth had let Percy pay for most things now, but before she put up a serious fight. Of course, it was one of the few times he had won. His mom always told him to pay for his date; it was just good manners.

Percy threw his ball first. He hit in the center but more towards the top, so he ended up knocking down all except the bottom row. "Damn," he said, sighing.

Annabeth laughed. "It's okay, I'll win you the teddy bear," she teased. "The trick, Seaweed Brain, is to hit at the bottom right in the middle. That's where everything is leaning towards," she explained.

"Okay, Wise Girl. Just one up me, why don't you?" Percy joked.

She laughed. "Oh, I will." She narrowed her eyes at him playfully. Then, she threw her ball with way more precision and accuracy than Percy had. She hit exactly where she needed to, making every bottle fall.

Percy shook his head when Annabeth smirked over at him. The worker grabbed the teddy bear and handed it to Annabeth.

"That was pretty awesome," Percy complimented.

"I know," Annabeth said, sweeping her hair over her shoulder exaggeratedly. They laughed. "Oh, and I won this for you." She handed him the teddy bear.

"What? No, you should—"

"No, no! It's for you." She smiled.

"Thank you," Percy accepted it. "Although, I feel a little stupid, because isn't the guy supposed to win something for the girl?"

"In the movies, sure. But this is better than the movies. It's a little more unconventional, but that's way more fun," she explained.

"It certainly is," he agreed, grinning at her. Just then, loud whooping down further ahead of them caught their attention.

"Shit," Annabeth cursed.

It was a group of kids from their school, but not just any kids. Ethan Nakamura and Matt Sloan led the group. Luckily they hadn't seemed to notice them. Yet.

In a split second, Percy was getting dragged in the opposite direction, Annabeth almost running. He followed close behind her, her hand squeezing his. The last thing they needed was for them to see Annabeth. She was technically supposed to be studying abroad on a program with the college she was going to. At least, that was what they agreed to tell everyone.

Annabeth led them straight out of the fair. They began walking down the park path, their pace slowing and becoming more comfortable. Now Percy could see Annabeth's profile in the moonlight, her complexion glowing. They were both a little out of breath and Percy still tingled with nerves. He hadn't realized it started snowing until he saw snowflakes in Annabeth's hair.

"You okay?" he finally asked.

"Yeah," Annabeth said. "But that was really close," she sighed. She stared down at her feet as they walked. It was dark but the lamps along the path dimly lit their way. Percy figured a walk around the pond would help Annabeth calm down.

"I know. But they didn't see you. We ran out too fast," he chuckled. Annabeth smiled over at him, laughing a bit as well. Then she heaved a sigh.

"I'm just glad we got out of th—"

She stopped walking abruptly.

"What?" Percy asked, his eyebrows furrowed with concern. He turned and faced Annabeth.

She said nothing. Instead, she grabbed Percy hands and placed them on her stomach. He felt a little pounding—a kick. His face broke out in a grin, and Annabeth's expression mirrored his.

"Oh-oh my god," Percy breathed, chuckling.

"He's really in there," Annabeth said, tears forming in her eyes.

"Yeah," Percy whispered. "Yeah he is." Percy kept his hand on Annabeth's belly. She stepped slightly closer to him, so that their faces were only a few inches apart. She looked up and pressed a kiss to his lips, gentle and slow.

They pulled away and Percy examined Annabeth. She beamed up at him and her skin glowed in the light of the lamps. With snowflakes in her golden hair, she looked like a goddess. And, to be quite honest, she kind of was one. Her strength made her even more beautiful.

Percy felt so lucky to be able to be apart of this. It was such an incredible thing and Annabeth was sharing it all with him. He thought now might be the right time to tell her.

But then she looked into his eyes. He saw her happiness over this, and he remembered how stressed she had been a few minutes prior because of the group of kids from Goode. Maybe she had been through enough tonight. Percy decided not to say anything, and to just let them have this beautiful moment.

"Thank you," Percy said, breaking their happy silence.

"For what?" Annabeth asked, a smile still on her gorgeous lips.

"For sharing this with me," he whispered, looking down into her eyes.

Her smile became just a little bit wider. "Thank you for being here."

"I wouldn't want to be anywhere else," Percy breathed, shaking his head.

And that was one of the truest things he had ever said.
