Rusted training wheels

As Melanie describes, removal of the training wheels is a signification of adoration and trust. When infants have a moment of bliss as their training wheels are clipped away and they can move freely without the brakes, its like the girl's love story in a way. With their brakes degrading gradually as they had the ability to express themselves freely, the journey to the happy ending that they had dreamt of was inching closer. Snuggled together in the back of the bus with the staff hiding at the front, Ava relaxed as she lent onto Lucy. Time ticked away and Charlie had sat slightly away from them so she let herself fall into Lucy's arm. Gently resting her head on her shoulder, Lucy smiled smugly and took in the moment. Her weight was comforting with Lucy zoning into her own world until she had to wake Ava up before the staff caught them. As the bus crawled about 15 minutes away from the unit, the staff were still distracted with Kiera trying to talk to Martha so Lucy woke Ava up with a soft kiss to her head and moved over. It was a thrill almost, mischievous but it was their game.

Kiera glanced down at the ground in disbelief as Martha bellowed for the girls to move in the same robotic tone. Her black knee high boots crunched as she motioned up the bus towards the back where Ava and Lucy now sat upright innocently, offering her a respectful stare. As the bus doors slid to a close, the girls watched in disappointment. Returning straight to their rooms, Charlie caught up with the others in the hallway with a spark in her eyes. She chattered happily until she was practically shoved back into her home, her enclosure for a while. Community had to be prepared so they were forbidden from leaving their rooms.

As the doors to their rooms slammed shut in a harmonious booming noise, Kiera waited for Martha by the staff station located just outside Ava and Lucy's room. The desk was oval shaped with booklets and forms messily covering the clinical white paint. Out of breath, Martha eventually stomped over then came to a halt.

" You could've covered up a bit, not very professional is it?", she grunted.

"Well I thought the girls would want to feel like they fit in, it made them relax a bit with me. Ava even told me about her experiences at comic con", explained Kiera.

"Well it was widely inappropriate, you should copy me. You better change before community, wouldn't want to distract the canteen men", bitterly replied Martha.

*taking a deep breath in frustration, shocked at what she had just heard* "What do you mean?", she asked in disbelief.

"I mean that you need to cover that whore chest and just do your job or i'm sending you home. Go on, listen to me then", snapped Martha before walking away.

*Irritated by her demands, Kiera searches for a spare uniform in the staff room. Finding a small, she peeled the cosplay off her then took a moment to compose herself before changing into it.  'This wasn't the 1950s, what the hell was she on about?' she thought. With an hour left until community, she walked up and down the hallway before stopping by the desk and peeking into Ava's room where she had found footage from the film to show Lucy.*

Lying on her bed, Lucy became submerged into the fantasy world presented to her. Just the thought of that days event was enough to make her genuinely smile, a core memory she could treasure forever. Between the singing and bold colors, she diverted her glaze for a second and noticed Ava giggling quietly just observing her.

" How did i only know about this now-", whined Lucy playfully.

" Cos i'm the cultured one, you need to catch up babes", responded Ava.

" Cheeky, I'm not a virgin anymore you can't technically say that", Lucy remarked.

"Hmmm so you seen Annie, Wicked and Beetlejuice genius?", asked Ava, still giggling slightly.

" No but you can teach me, would you mind?", responded Lucy with a sneaky wink.

"I can be a tutor sure, involves actually cosplaying though", insisted Ava.

Laughter fills the room, making Kiera smile to herself just watching them. She couldn't hear them but the positive energy was radiating from the girls. This was interrupted with community as Martha lurked over Kiera until she started the session under her watchful eye.

Today's topic was gratitude again, but this time they all had more to say related to the trip so there was less awkward silence at least. Charlie had bunched in-between Ava and Lucy again, eager to tell the others about her experience

"Rocky was exceptional, his build was almost like a more toned version of Luke Hemmings. I am thankful for him", she joked.

Everyone laughed apart from Martha who had a stone- cold look in her eyes. Kiera agreed and started a debate on this topic until the session ended, engaging all the girls with Ava and Lucy exchanging cheeky looks. Carefully ending the session with a motivational quote, Kiera bit her lip afterwards and looked over at Martha whom obviously disagreed with the topic but had given up. Why waste her breath when the girls were clearly more engaged? Like it or not, she had to bring some positivity to the programme.

Dinner whirled around and nobody wanted to lose their privileges after an amazing adventure outdoors, away from the seclusion. The pure thought of gagging down an NG was a contrast to the freedom of nature with the hustle of shoppers and wildlife soaring in the fresh sky. Equally as satisfied to not have to place any, Martha locked the girls in their rooms for the night as all the staff left. Time passed in the same fashion with Ava and Lucy growing closer in secrecy but it was time to fill in Charlie.

4 months go by
Following their first date, Ava and Lucy had built an interpersonal bond that was more than Lucy had ever experienced. From helping each-other conquer fear foods together with boosts from new coffees, the recovery process was moving along smoothly and almost in a linear structure. Charlie had been filled in out of earshot of the staff via texts that were swiftly deleted but she was supportive, admittedly extra cautious on any outings though and she became their security guard. Tied in with their fear food challenges by oath via their previous promise, Charlie tried committing too but even with all the outside support she received it was hard work when she could picture Jason's inhumane suffering. But this wasn't her fault, and being close to remission it was time for her to oppress these feelings so Jason had visited to re-assure her but he had that familiar weak look in her eyes.

With Kiera starting a revolutionary attitude change due to her relatability to the girls, she had started bringing in books for them to borrow and read in their free-time. Providing individual journals for every girl that started borrowing books, Lucy was provided an opportunity to continue her education into the world of english literature. Starting with John Greens 'Fault in our stars' then progressing onto historical texts such as 'The book thief' . The ability just to write and read was beneficial for all of them really, the passion had rubbed off on Charlie too who hadn't got into college yet. The words acted as escapism away from their reality, a distraction to help them deviate from their negative thoughts for a brief moment in time.

Invested into her passion, Lucy had insisted on introducing Charlie to the wild west of literature. With tons of genres to choose from, Charlie was lost so with guidance she discovered a keen interest in the work of John Green. His poetic writing style and emotive language was heartwarming for her, like they were written solely for her and healed her soul. It wasn't complex to work out why Lucy had invested her future aspirations to writing, whilst she was still young and naive perhaps she could find success in the cut-throat industry of publishing and grueling editing Charlie thought.

Overall, there had been a shift in the unit with trips becoming more fun. The dates were more magical but the upcoming one was more independent for the girls. A day in Weston Super- Mare, practically alone to wander for a while with the softer supervision of Kiera and Lauren. It restored a childlike buzz into the girls during discussions, in a psychiatric ward there's no blaring music and arcade games. There's no beach or shops, there was here. Of course this would be conditional though on the same terms always sent by the dementor Martha, the girls were familiar with these now so as long as big carb dinners were off the menu then all 3 of the group would be safe to go.

Any other couple has the chance to have alone time in stimulating environments like fairs, the homes of fun. Despite not being their first date, this day for Ava and Lucy could mean everything...
