CHAPTER 14 - FRIEND

"I feel like something is shattered deep inside me other than ribs, something more important than bones that can never be mended."

..
"I went out to call Dr Manik Malhotra because of the network issue. We just c-completed the surgery and it was suc-successfull because of h-him"

Nandini said taking breaks after every few words. It was though for her to talk and even harder to talk about the incident. She was not alone, Manik was right beside her and not as a doctor but as a friend. When asked who would she like to stay with her, she without hesitation had whispered his name, like that was the only name that existed in this world.

Apart from that there had to be one doctor around for constant check on her as her health could go downhill by going down the Memory lane. So just one look at Manik and he knew that this time he was needed as a friend and not a doctor. He sat there holding her hands in his, wearing a casual white shirt and blue jeans and Doctor Raj Malhotra opted to be the "DOCTOR" in charge.

In front of them sat two police officers and one on a video call from India, taping everything she uttered, every breath she took, every hiss, every tear.

Manik's hold tightened a little as she took a deep breath which hurt-ed her ribs and she hissed unconsciously.

"A kid ran and held the corner of my dress crying miserably, he looked hurt and couldn't ev-even speak without his-hissing in pain. I remember bending down and asking him about what was wrong, he looked like someone who got lost and couldn't find his parents for da-days. He looked afraid looking back after every tw-two seconds. He took my hand and made me walk a little away fr-from the hospital all the time saying "please please help me, save me" I looked back at -at a few men who hid behind the trees of the other side of the road that couldn't be see-seen in CCTV footage. One of whose gun was pointed and him and another at -at me. I knew something was wrong so I clicked the power button if my phone to call the po-police, emergency call. (EVERY PHONE HAS IT, PUSH THE POWER BUTTON TWICE AND YOUR CALL WILL GET CONNECTED,mostly the lines ig are busy but lucky ones ig get through it) "

She paused and closed her eyes, tired. Her jaw started paining and her eyes watered, the natural shine in her eyes lost, it was like all of a sudden she was transported back to someplace she didn't ever wanted to go, back to the night that almost cost her, her life.

Dr Raj Malhotra - I think that's enough for today, I'll request you all to leave. The patient needs ample amount of rest and she can't talk now, we can't take any risks.

The officers nodded and asked for them to call them again when she's ready.
Will she ever really be ready?
She might be, you can never know a person even if you spend a life time with them, a person can be anything but known completely.

The room was engulfed in silence , no one broke it, her eyes were just closed blocking the world and two pair of eyes were just captivated in the silence that had prevailed, in the eyes that were closed, in the smell of medicines that lingered. No one moved, they both stayed exactly where they were. For how long? They had no idea it was as if the world had paused, the time had stopped and there were this three people in the room stuck in oblivion.

After god knows how long someone broke the silence unexpectedly and surprisingly

"When can I have Chilly Chicken?"

Manik's and Raj's eyes widened in shock and a laugh erupted from their mouth, she was insane, crazy and absolutely stunning, did she know that?

MANIK was amazed by her but there was someone more smitten than him,yes ,his father. He had this beautiful emotions flowing in his veins for her, she had that aura and no one could blame him.

Navya -Nandini is weird, she can't handle gloominess around her and she does not know what to speak when, she is so abrupt sometimes that it will take you aback but that is only because she is not very fond of silence may be because she has always lived around one so when there are people around her, she feels like its on her to make the environment better so she speaks anything and everything that comes in her mind.

Navya said to Cabir who was in the cafeteria when he noticed her sitting alone lost in her thoughts. He wanted to tell her that her best friend was awake, but he knew Nandani wasn't yet ready to face the world outside and as much as it crushed his heart, she meant a lot to him.

Cabir smiled at Navya , the kind of smile that makes you believe the good of this world, the kind of smile you want to see when you get home after a long tiring, exhausting day.

Cabir - She will be fine Navya, she is fine.

Navya nodded and her eyes teared up a little, a part of her life was inside the hospital room, how can she be just fine?

Navya - I know, I know when wakes up or if she has already she won't meet me or anyone and you know why? She'll say because she is not ready but that's not it, it's because she wouldn't want anyone of us to see her like this. She is just that kind of person. I know Cabir, she might be awake right now and yet won't want to meet me or she might still be in coma and fighting with herself to wake up.

To say Cabir was shocked will be an understatement, She knew, she had a hunch and it although made him guilty but he was awestruck of their friendship, so what they had on between, so so much love and respect. There wasn't an ounce of foreign emotions but just pure love and friendship something he had with Manik.

Cabir - You are incredible you know that?

Navya laughed slightly, her eyes still wet and they both sipped their coffees in silence.

And then the air of comfort surrounded them.

---_----_----_----_-----_-----_-----_-----_--_-----_-

Nyonika kept calling Raj and Manik but no one picked up, she was walking to and fro in tension, these two man of her life was giving her a tough time these days. She couldn't help but worry about them, they had no time to come home, eat or so much so to even call her at least twice a day.

Enough was enough, she needed to know what was going on in her son's as well as husband's life that they had completely forgotten a place called "home".

With her determined face, their laughing face and Cabir's and Navya's peaceful face, the scene freezes.

"When Anne Carson said "I feel so lonely, like childhood again." and when Ryan O'Connell said "I don't want to have to be the one who mourns everything when everyone else has clearly forgotten. It's mortifying. It's mortifying to be the one who remembers." and when Gregory Orr said "Childhood dotted with bodies. Let them go, let them be ghosts. 'No,' I said, 'make them stay, make them stone.' "
