20 The whole package

Vanessa POV

Looking at Damian's overjoyed face was all I needed at that moment. And although we hadn't expected any of this at all, it was still a wonderful gift. Even though I would never admit it, at least not out loud, I was now very grateful that I had more or less been forced to take a paternity test. Because without all that, we might never have found out. Or only much later.

But the more I thought about it... Maybe we would have suspected it as soon as our baby was born. I mean, there was a good chance that he or she would look a hell of a lot like D.

Damian hugged me tightly again before giving me a kiss. I could feel so many emotions in it. Love, relief and happiness, lots of happiness.

I had to think back to the evening when I had told Damian that I was pregnant. And that he had said that it could even be the best thing that could happen to me. As it turned out, he wasn't so wrong.

At some point I took him by the hand and we went into the house. I lifted Pom-Pom into my arms. She immediately cuddled up to me. We went into the living room and sat down together on the couch to relax. Pom lay down on my legs and kept gently nudging my growing bump. She already knew the little person inside me.

"This is so crazy. We're having a baby!" Damian whispered as he placed his hand on my belly, right where Pom was repeatedly nudging.

Satisfied, she licked his hand. I couldn't help but giggle softly.

"It really is. Looks like we're a real family now." I said softly.

"Yes... the whole package in one fell swoop." he replied and then gave me a kiss on the temple.

"I really hope I'm up to the task. You know, being a mother and a wife. It scares me a little. And by a little, I mean a lot," I said as I placed my hand on his.

"I promise you that you can do it. And you can count on me. I won't mess this up. If I even tried to let it slide, I know at least a dozen women who would kick my ass," he replied to cheer me up.

And it worked. I had to laugh, at least for a moment, until I finally sighed.

"I know, I know... I just think about my mother a lot right now. And I guess that's the effect of being bounced around the foster care system for a good 10 years until you find a family to settle down in," I explained.

"I get what you mean, but I don't think it defines you. Look at how you've grown... I bet your 15 year old self would freak out with joy if it knew what you've achieved." he replied.

"True... She wouldn't believe me though... The girl was very skeptical no matter what it was about..." I said.

Damian knew everything about my story, of course. How I had to go to hospital at the age of four because my tonsils had been taken out and how my mother had left me there. It was assumed that she couldn't pay the bill and had abandoned me to start somewhere new instead. She had tried to find her, but to no avail. And as no one knew who my father was and I had no relatives, I ended up with my first foster family. From then on, I hardly stayed with a family for more than a year.

My social worker had initially hoped that one of the families would adopt me, but that never happened. I guess it was because people preferred to have babies and so my chances diminished with every year I got older.

I was already 15 when I came to my last foster parents. And that was a real blessing. They really tried everything to give me a nice, stable home. I felt loved by them and I finally managed to be a normal teenager. I did better at school, made friends and enjoyed life.

"Can I ask you something, Feliz?" Damian asked into my thoughts.

"Sure." I replied and looked at him.

"You said yesterday that you wanted me to sign something else...what was it?" he wanted to know.

"Oh...I completely forgot! Well, with our new knowledge, that's no longer necessary." I said.

"What do you mean?" he asked, confused.

"It was a letter for my lawyer to include in my last will and testament. I guess I was thinking like you, because I wanted you to be the baby's legal guardian. You know, just in case. In case something should happen. But since you've managed that in a different way, I don't need that anymore." I laughed as I thought about how quickly everything had changed.

"Wow, I... I wasn't expecting that. But it's really sweet we think alike. And that you weren't worried about me messing up the baby." he replied with a laugh too.

"I love you..." I then said into the pleasant silence.

"I love you too... And this little one here... and this fur ball. Tell me... What do you say we go away together for a few days next week. With Miss Pom, of course." he replied, adding the last part because she had lifted her head and looked at him.

"Do you even have time for that? Because it sounds very tempting." I wanted to know.

"It's the last chance before the whole WrestleMania hassle starts. And with that comes the new angle with Edge. Who knows when I'll next have time for one of those things? Besides, the summer and the heat will probably be pretty exhausting for you, Mami...I wouldn't want to add to that.

And then I promised you that we would catch up on the original plan for Valentine's Day. What do you say? Can I whisk you away for a few relaxing days? You know I won't take no for an answer anyway," he replied.

"Well in that case, I guess I can only say yes, right?" I asked.

"Absolutely. Then I can arrange everything," he said with satisfaction.
