twenty-two
22|| finding twerps and getting hurt
"Alison, I have a bad feeling about this."
Washington, D.C., October 2016-
Shutting the door to the room, Alison pulled her gloves on and her visor down. She plugged in her Bluetooth comm, connecting to her phone.
Putting Skylar on dial, Alison gracefully leaped out the window, falling down mostly on her feet. Ali almost tripped on a branch as she ran away from the hotel, beginning to follow the faint trail Spider-Man left.
"Hello?" Skylar's voice sounded through the comm, sounding tired. "Alison it's 11PM at night, why are you calling?"
"You know that spider twerp?" Alison sighed, pressing into the small device. "Spider-Man or whatever?"
"Yeah, what about it?" Skylar rolled over in her bed, turning on her light blue lamp. She shifted her phone to the other shoulder.
"Can you track him, like somehow with that tech your dad made?" Alison gestured wildly, skidding to a stop at a local store.
"I can most certainly try." Skylar grunted, pulling up her laptop. Clacking away on a software device, Skylar honed in on his location. "Got it. He's.... back at your hotel?"
Alison slid her feet, skidding to a stop. "Sky, that's impossible. I just left from there. And so did he."
"That bastard must of taken out his tracker." Skylar muttered, throwing the phone down on her bed. "Hold up, I'm placing you on speaker."
"Yeah, I don't care right now." Alison looked awkwardly around the Washington DC streets. "Where the hell is that little twerp?"
"It says he hacked into the suit and shut down the training wheels protocol. Of course he did." Sky muttered, tapping away at the laptop again. "I'll send whatever his assistant is saying over to your Bluetooth device, but I'll still be able to talk."
"Great." Alison began to run again. "Which direction?" She looked around at the middle of town, racing past famous monuments.
"He's off towards Maryland." Skylar strained her eyes to see the exact location. "A random gas station on the side of the road."
"100 meters from destination enclosing." An electric voice chimed in Alison's ear as she was running to Skylar's instructions.
"Holy shit! What was that?" Ali exclaimed, slightly startled by the loud electronic voice.
"That was the AI system in the Spider-Man's suit." Skylar reminded Alison. "Now turn right."
"Jump now." The AI reminded the girls, Alison's nose crinkling up underneath her visor. She shrugged off the remark and kept running.
"Keep going straight, you'll be there in five minutes at this point." Skylar tapped her finger on the keypad impatiently.
"What side is this rundown dump on? It's like the middle of nowhere. There's literally forest around here." Alison scoffed, looking around at the dark scenery.
"It's on your right, and be careful. The Interstate is kind of busy ahead of you. Don't get run over." Skylar laughed lightly. "And the middle of nowhere is kind of the point Alison."
"What is the Spider-Man even doing here though?!" Alison emphasized, flustered and confused.
"God knows why. Isn't that why you're here?" Skylar rolled her eyes. "You know, to follow the twerp?"
"Voice of reason, eh?" Alison smirked, running through the busy interstate. "How much longer?"
"Long enough for you to rot in hell." Skylar pestered. "Three minutes. It won't be that long. With you and your 'super speed'-" She gestured wildly. "You could probably make in two."
"Sharp right here." Skylar screeched, talking over the automated voice inside of the Spider-Man's suit. "Activating Advaned Reconnaissance mode." It chimed.
Alison turned sharply, running into a small tree. She stumbled, and rolled into the grass behind the gas station. "Ugh," She groaned slightly, lying on the ground. "You couldn't of told me that earlier?"
"No." Skylar laughed. "I thought it would be funny for you to run into a tree. Now get up, we gotta go into reconnaissance mode."
Alison slowly got up, creeping to some bushes behind the gas station sigh where the spiderling was perched.
"Would you like me to engage in advance combat mode?" The suit lady's voice rang through Alison's earpiece.
"Advanced Combat mode?" Alison questioned. "Skylar, please tell me that they're joking." She looked up at the Spider-Man, who was talking to himself, or the suit lady.
The typing noise of Skylar's computer could be heard through the call line. "The lady's not." Skylar warned. "That's only one of many things the activated suit can do. Including-"
"Activating instant kill." The electronic voice chimed pleasantly. Skylar leaned back onto the pillow in her bed.
"That. That is another feature of the complete spider suit." Skylar took a deep breath.
"Well that's just great." Alison muttered, standing up out of her position.
"Deactivating instant kill." The lady chimed, the girls immediately relaxing.
"We should probably come up with a name for the lady, is going to be awkward to keep calling her suit lady." Ali pointed out, keeping her eyes glued on the other hero.
"How about Taylor? Ciera? Jessica? Juliet?" Skylar listed off a few names, grabbing a wrapped lollipop off of her nightstand.
"None of those fit!" Alison disagreed, shaking her head. "It has to be something kind of tacky yet common." She kept watching the Spider-Man, and he slinged off the sign onto the ground, flat onto his face.
"Karen?" Skylar asked, popping the newly unwrapped lollipop in her mouth. "That has a nice ring to it."
"That's great." Alison said, the conversation with Skylar now set off to side. "Now hush, I think the kid's gonna do something even more stupid."
"You jumped off the sign and landed on your face." Karen, or spider suit lady, broke the silence.
There was an awkward silence between the two girls, before they both burst out laughing. Quickly realizing that Spider-Man was still in reconnaissance mode, Alison clapped her hand over her mouth.
It was too late. The other hero turned around to see Alison. "What are you doing here?" The boy gritted out. "Alison?"
"I dunno." Ali shrugged, pulling up her visor mask. "Why are you here twerp?" She leaned up against the sign post, looking nonchalantly at Spider-Man.
"Cause- this vulture guy is selling illegal weapons. And I'm here to stop him. It's w-what heroes do." Spider-Man said bravely.
"Great. Then I'm here to do the exact same thing. Those people we fought in the bank had those weapons, and we can't have that around Queens. Shall we kick some ass?" Alison teased, still not fully on board with helping the kid.
"I guess." The hero muttered, shooting webs at the top of the gas station roof. The webs came off in a rapid fire motion, the websinger's eyes furrowing in confusion.
"Suit lady!?!" Spider-Man exclaimed. "What's wrong with my web shooters?" He ran over to a gas pump and hid behind that.
"You're truly an idiot." Alison laughed, zooming right to spot next to the other hero. She pulled down her visor mask again.
"Rapid fire is the default for advanced combat mode." Karen reminded Spider-Man.
"Why would I need rapid fire?" Spider-Man peeked to the van behind him, making sure that the criminals didn't see him.
"Would you like to see more options? You have 576 different web shooter combinations." Karen chimed in, making the spidering look frantic.
"Look-" Alison rolled her eyes. "I'm just going to go fight. Are you in or not?" She gestured over to the van.
"Good call-" Skylar chimed in, reminding Alison that her presence was still there. She took the lollipop out of her mouth.
"Sky- I need you to try and find what they're hijacking." Alison muttered. "Not be the peanut gallery to my remarks." She looked expectantly at the Spider-Man.
"Got it." Skylar groaned, tapping away at her laptop again. "It's a shipment of alien cleanup from Lagos and the Triskelion."
"So what should I do?" Ali asked Skylar. "Just wait for them to do something? Or should I phase in there and watch over the supplies?"
"Just wait." Skylar advised. "You'll miss all of your pushing people and running away technique you call fighting."
By the time Alison got done talking out a strategy with Skylar, the Spider-Man had messed with electric webs and scaled the top of the snack shack.
Ali turned around to see the hero, throwing her arms up in exasperation. Then, the whooshing of an airplane could be heard from above them.
"Oh my gosh-" Alison could hear the Spider-Man say. She looked up at the flying thing in the sky, seeing it was a person.
"They're really a vulture, aren't they?" She muttered to herself, looking back up at the superhero.
Quickly deciding against Skylar, Alison reacted quickly to the flying guy. He appeared to be heading towards the caboose, and so she raced over there as well.
Using her super speed to phase through the truck wall, Alison found herself surrounded by crates of alien tech. "The cleaning department is really loaded, aren't they?" She muttered, slightly exhausted from all of the effort that phasing took.
Not even a few moments after she got in, a clanging noise could be heard from the roof, and a purple phasing rectangle of the roof was gone.
"What the hell-" Ali whispered with shock, watching a man drop down into the truck with her. Gathering up her courage, Alison stepped out of the shadows. She walked towards the man, a small confident swagger within her.
"You know that stealing alien tech is illegal- right?" Alison mentioned, leaning up against one of the crates. "You're kind of breaking the law." She reminded him, looking at the man with a neutral expression.
"So you're the other one. The new hero." The man laughed, his voice distorted through the mask. "You've got spunk girl. Remind me of my own girl."
"Ah, so you're a parent. Isn't that another reason for you not to do this?" Ali asked, walking closer and closer towards him.
"And that's where you're wrong." The man chuckled again, a cruel tone in his voice. "That's the exact reason why I'm doing this, and why you'll never beat me. I'm a father, and you can't take a father away to jail, can you?"
"I can't take you to jail just yet-" Alison pointed out, her eyes crinkling a little bit. "But I can kick your ass."
The man laughed again. What was it with this man and laughing. "Maybe another time. But you're still too naive." He brought out a small gravity gun hidden within his jacket. "And that's another reason why I'll win."
He took the gravity gun, and banged Alison up and down against the roof and floor of the truck. By the time he dropped her, Alison's head hit the floor first, and she fell to the ground unconscious.
"Now-" The vulture looked at the truck around him. "Let's loot this thing."
