Chapter 39:
"Over here, I found her!" I opened my eyes and Ron was standing over top of me.
He bent down and pulled me up off the ground to my feet. He shook off his jacket and draped it over my frozen frame. My whole body was shivering from the bitter arctic wind blowing across the field. He covered me up with his body to block the biting gusts that swirled up around us.
"You'll be ok, Jessa. Cameron's on his way." Ron said softly as he tried to help me regain the feeling in my frozen skin. He ran his hands up and down my back to help me regenerate some of my lost body heat.
I was so fucking cold.
"I don't want to see him." I managed to choke out in little trembling gasps.
"You have been missing for three hours. The whole police department has been out searching for you. Cameron even tried to call in the search and rescue team. I think you will be seeing him whether you want to or not." Ron explained.
"He is with her. He doesn't want to be with me anymore." I slurred. The pills were making me feel like I was in a frozen pond trapped under the ice. I was pounding my fists against it, trying to break free. I was all over the place and nowhere at the same time.
Nathan had brought out the good stuff tonight.
"Jessa, it's not what you think. I promise you that I wouldn't lie to you about this. Kelly was put in charge of the raffle tickets for the Winter Carnival boosters. Cameron was going to go pick them up from her tonight so he can drop them off at a couple of stores when he is on patrol tomorrow. He would never do that to you." Ron said softly.
"He has to be cheating on me. He didn't say anything to me about going there. Why would he hide it from me? She made it sound sexy and they were together before. She is better for him than I am. I don't know why he is with me. I'm not right." All my insecurities were out in my drug-induced state. I couldn't hold them back in any longer.
"Because I love you everything about you. Even the part that punches me without warning me first." Cameron's voice cut through my cries. My eyes were immediately searching for Cameron the second I heard his voice. He had snuck up next to us while I was pouring my heart out to Ron. His lip was red and puffy and cracked at the corner. I drilled him pretty hard when I snapped.
He looked concerned and completely worn down when he walked over to us. He placed his hand gently under my chin and raised my face up to look him in the eyes. I was so weak I could barely support my own head. He bent down and studied me closely. Cameron's brow furrowed as his lips pulled down into a frown. He was trained to recognize when someone was under the influence and I wasn't in a place to even try to hide it from him.
My lip trembled as I watched his disappointment in me grow. Every muscle in his body tensed up at the same time. He was upset with me. Cameron knew I was high.
"Here, I've got her," Cameron said to Ron and placed his hand on my waist to help support me. Ron passed me to Cameron like I was a little doll.
"Jess, I'm sorry I didn't say anything to you. I didn't think it was a big deal at the time. I am a complete idiot. Please forgive me." Cameron hugged me tightly. "I was so worried about you. You can't run from me like that again. You could have gotten hurt out here."
"She was sleeping on the ground when I found her. She's really out of it." Ron informed him.
"Jess has been going through a bit of a rough patch over the last few days, but we have been handling it," Cameron explained it away. If I were in my right mind, I would punch him again for telling Ron I had been struggling. That was one of those pieces of information that should have stayed between the two of us.
"I'll put out the call to have someone sent over so she can be taken in to get checked out." Ron said as he began to reach in his pants pocket to pull out his phone.
My body began to twitch at the mention of going in. Dr. Schroeder would drug test me. If he found what Nathan had given me in my system, then I would be locked away again. I couldn't let that happen. It was bad enough Cameron knew, but if everyone else did, I was dead in the water. I had to sweet talk my way out of this with Cameron.
So, I did what I do best, I pressed myself up against Cameron and ran my hands over where his v-lines were on his torso. His breath changed a little and I knew I had him under my spell.
"Can't you just take me home?" I batted my eyelashes at him.
He glared down at me and bit the inside of his cheek. He was having an internal battle on what he should do next. Cameron was fighting it a lot harder than I thought he would.
He sighed and nodded at me.
"She'll be fine, Ron. Jessa is just tired and needs to get some sleep. I'll keep an eye on her the rest of the night. If she doesn't rebound by morning, I'll take her in first thing." Cameron answered.
"Thank you, Cami." My sloppy words rang out louder than I intended.
Ron was shaking his head in disbelief. He clearly disagreed with Cameron's assessment of my current state. He wasn't an idiot; Ron knew there was something not right about the situation he just found me in.
"Cameron. I need to talk to you." Ron motioned for him to come over to him.
"I'll be back in one second, darling." Cameron kissed the top of my head. I felt like I was going to fall over the second he stopped supporting my weight. I had to hold onto the decaying corn stalks to stay up on my feet.
Cameron walked over to Ron and the two had their heads together in a deep conversation. Ron's hands were flying around and he kept pointing over at me.
"She's not fine. Are you blind or just plain stupid?" I heard Ron's raised voice.
Cameron patted him on the back and leaned in to whisper lowly to him. I wished I could hear what he was telling him because Ron's eyes grew into the size of a dinner plate.
"No, shit." His mouth was hanging open as his head turned slowly towards me. He stared over at me, blinking rapidly.
Cameron was nodding and I saw the corner of his mouth pull up in a slight smile. Ron's posture changed immediately and he gave Cameron one of those one-armed guy hugs. He was patting his back hard like he was congratulating him about something.
What the fuck did Cameron say to him?
"Oh, wow. I... wow. That makes a lot more sense now. No wonder you went psycho on me when she ran. You should have said something." Ron's voice carried over with another gust of wind. He looked over at me and smiled. He gave me a thumbs up and Cameron smacked his hands down immediately.
Cameron leaned back in and whispered to Ron, who nodded back. His lips formed a giant "o" as he nodded his head up and down at Cameron like he was a bobblehead. They both began trotting back over to me. Cameron took some of my weight on one side and Ron wrapped his arm around the other side to help. I noticed Ron was handling me a lot more gently than he did when he first found me.
The whole exchange was strange and I felt like I was missing something.
When we got to the parking lot, Cameron opened his truck door and helped me in. Ron pushed past him and wrapped me in a hug.
"I had no idea. If it makes you feel any better, my sister did stuff like this all the time in the beginning too. She threw a whole bowl of mashed potatoes at me during dinner one night because I told her they were still lumpy. You should get home and take it easy. If you need anything at all, don't hesitate to call me." Ron smiled and started heading back over towards his car where Daisy was still waiting for him.
She raised her hand and waved at me politely, but I could tell she was still upset. My crazy had ruined everyone's night like always. I waved back and tried to send an apologetic look to her. She wasn't going to be calling to hang out with me anytime soon.
Cameron opened the driver's side door and climbed in. He turned on the heat in his truck and blasted it at full speed. I was thankful his truck always warmed up quickly. It was going to take me hours to feel right again after everything that happened tonight.
"What was all that about with Ron?" I asked Cam.
"I don't know. Ron is just a weird guy. He likes to hear himself talk." Cameron shrugged.
He was lying to me. I could see it written all over his face. He said something to Ron to get him to back off and I had no clue what it was.
"How did you end up out of the maze and sleeping in the cornfield?" Cameron turned the tables on me.
"I got lost and didn't know where I was. I started feeling dizzy, so I sat down and closed my eyes for a bit." I answered back.
And now I was lying to him too.
Cameron threw the truck in reverse and then took off down the gravel path to take us home. Once we were on the street and done with the bumps and crunching rock under the tires, Cameron took my hand in his and placed it on his lap. He held it firmly in place like he was afraid I was going to jump out of the car.
There was probably a chance I might; I had tried it before.
"No more. I know you took something tonight. You are hurting more than just yourself when you use and I can't let it happen. I will take you straight back to the treatment center if I catch you again." Cameron said just loud enough for me to hear over the radio. He clenched his jaw and squeezed my hand a little too tightly.
I nodded my head to let him know I understood.
