Conflicted Chapter Six

Not much occurred for the next few days after finding the burned down house. Natsumi said little to nothing to everyone, even father, but Daiki doesn't really speak to his father either. Kouhei was running out of things to cook and began to go into a panicked frenzy. Father continued to struggle with fixing the car. He believes he might have to go into town to have someone come down to their house and have a look at it. Daiki on the other hand has grown impatient. He has given Natsumi more time to adjust than what he would like, instead he would rather she told him what happened and then leave. Yes, take what he needed and then she would be off.

Daiki's brow furrowed in frustration. Deep down he didnt want her to leave and he still doesnt know why. He has been trying to identify the emotions he's been having lately but to no avail.

Daiki sat down in the kitchen chair with his leg bouncing up and down while he thought. He could hear his father outside spitting cuss words and the cranks of the wrench. Maybe he should help repair the car. If it wasnt fixed sooner or later then he was going to have to go hunting. The guns were kept in the shed along with the ammunition and compound bows.

He preferred the bow.

It was quick and silent if used right. Maybe that could be something to do later to get his mind off of Natsumi.

Maybe he could hunt something else.

Daiki hummed in satisfaction as his thought took flight. He enjoyed his plan and he knew he will most likely follow it through, but he can't take Kouhei with him.

"I can't get this damn car running!" He father shouted outloud while slamming the door behind him, "I think I'm going to have to run to town later tomorrow."

Daiki glanced at his father in annoyance because he disrupted his pleasant thoughts. Kouhei on the other hand poked his head into the kitchen with a big smile, "Does that mean we will get groceries?" He looked almost desperate.

Father's hand went to stroke his chin in thought, "I guess I could run to the store while I'm at it."

"Yes!" Kouhei cheered, "Does that mean I can tag along?" His eyes were bright and pleading.

"No." Father said quickly.

Kouhei's pleading was cut short as he now whined, "But why?"

Father approached Kouhei and ruffled his hair, "There is nothing exciting in town that you need to see. You will benefit more here in the house."

Daiki watched the scene like it was some sort of episode. However, he can admit that he was curious what could possibly be in the town. It would definitely be nice to quench his curiosity.

Both Daiki and Kouhei have never left the woods. They've lived in the protection of the house and the cover of the tree's for their entire life. Daiki was getting bored of everything.

"What's wrong with going into town?"

Father turned to look at Daiki from the sudden question. He seemed almost taken aback but just like Daiki he has the ability to quickly compose himself.

"You just don't need to be going to town. The town we live by isn't a good place to go...maybe when you're a little older I can take you both there."

Daiki didn't like his answer, "We're both adults now."

Father shook his head at Daiki in a dismissal look. He no longer wanted to continue this conversation, "I told you both no and nothing will change that answer."

"Tch." Daiki had to turn his head from his father or else he would see just how irritated he became.

Natsumi walked into the kitchen cautiously. It seems she could feel the growing tension between Daiki and his father and from then on not much occured.

It wasn't long for the night to start coming and Daiki finally calmed down. There was an itch he was trying to fight to the best of his ability. He isn't used to being in the house for this long and it was beginning to feel like a cage to him.

Kouhei was upstairs in his bed and his father was nowhere to be seen. To be truthful, his father always seemed to be a suspicious man...

"Daiki...?" Natsumi softly spoke to him, breaking the silence, "Are you alright?"

He didn't move but he could hear her concern for him. Her words were like a gentle caress to his heart and he felt himself go at ease. Daiki inhaled, "I'm conflicted."

They were both sitting on the couch in the living room. Natsumi's eyes studied him intensely as she tried to piece everything together.

"I understand that feeling." A small, humorous smile played at her lips but he knew that there was sadness beneath that smile.

He wasn't ready for her to smile. He didn't expect it and he knew she shouldn't be smiling. It was enough to make him turn and take her arms in his hands, "Why are you smiling? You went through hell and you're smiling!?" A growl radiated from his words and he felt and eminating energy heat his body with fury.

Her smile vanished and she struggled to speak, "I...I know but drowning in sorrow won't help me..." tears began to well up at the corner of her eyes, "I already feel like a burden...I might have been through hell but you're helping me through it..."

He was almost baffled and his grip on her arms loosened, "I'm..." He shouldn't have said anything and so he kept his mouth shut instead of apologizing. He didnt know what to do in this situation.

Natsumi sniffled and used her shoulder to wipe her eyes, "You don't have to say anything to me, Daiki." A small, sad smile appeared, "You've already helped me enough. Maybe your dad can take me to town as well so I won't be in your hair."

Now he was terrified, "No!" He shouted without thinking, "I don't want you to leave."

Her eyes widened with shock. Daiki rendered her utterly speechless as she fought to think of something, anything to break this barrier they had between each other.

He was now even more conflicted than before, "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have shouted at you." Daiki now let her arms go and he stood up, "I will leave you so you can calm down. I shouldn't have said anything."

He needed to get away from her. Usually he never yells because he is typically silent and kept to himself, yet she crossed the line of his control. He got up from the couch and she didn't do anything as he left her alone in the living room. He had to get out of the house. He had to get out of this cage.

Daiki opened the front door and emerged into the outside where he  inhaled the air. He felt calmer outside the house, free from the barrier keeping him contained.

Daiki approached the shed with his eyes guiding him through the darkness. Within him he could feel himself struggling to remain in control of himself. He wanted to go back into that house and comfort her. Instead, he punched in the combination and smiled when he saw his bow hung up on a hook.

He decided it was time to go hunting.
