The Deep End

Y/n stared down the man standing at the door. She recalled Giran said his name was Buriki. He brushed a short lock of black hair from his eyes with his pale, slender fingers. Buriki's clothes were rather dull, a black T-shirt and jeans. Y/n heard a faint, metallic clatter from the silver beaded bracelet around his wrist.

His smile widened, his very prominent canines became more noticeable. "Oooh, great, you remember me. For a second there, I thought you forgot. How awkward would that be?" he cooed.

"If there's a hole in my wall, you're gonna be payin' for it." Giran lit up a cigarette and leaned back into his chair. Buriki's gaze flashed towards Giran before returning to y/n.

He took a few steps into the office towards y/n. His sharp eyes narrowed a bit. Y/n found herself scooting away from him. He stopped and looked down at her. "Let's get straight to the point. I wanna join your little group."

Y/n knitted her brows. This wasn't what she was expecting. "Why?"

He shrugged. "You broke me out, simple as that. I'd still be locked away in Tartarus if you didn't mess with my restraints."

Buriki chuckled and continued to talk. "It takes a special person to go into one of the most high-tech prisons, filled with the world's most dangerous people. Then, look at someone in complete sensory isolation and think: he seems like a decent member of society, I want him to walk free."

Buriki's words felt like a backhanded compliment. It was like he was looking down on her. "I don't make those kinds of calls." Technically, that was Tomura's job. However, he passed it over to Dabi long before y/n had met Tomura.

"Oh, are you less important than I assumed? My bad." The smile faded for a second, and he genuinely looked confused. However, it returned very quickly.

Buriki tapped his face, just below one of his eyes. "At Tartarus, I was keeping a close eye on you since my blindfolds were removed. It seemed like most of your group was protecting you. They spared no time to get you out of my cell. You were even the first person they removed from Tartarus altogether. I assumed you must have some sort of worth."

Y/n didn't answer him. She ultimately decided that it wasn't her place to give herself a status among The League. Y/n was no more important than most of The League.

"So, who do I need to talk to, then?" Buriki folded his arms across his chest. Y/n opened her mouth and hesitated.

What should she refer to Tomura as? To her, he was many different things, after all. She also had one other option. Y/n looked to Giran. "Can you call Dabi for me?"

Giran sighed, a puff of smoke infected the air around him. "He's tough to get a hold of." Regardless of his previous statement, Giran made an attempt to call the patchwork villain.

Y/n observed Buriki as they waited to hear from Dabi. He was roaming around the office, lightly humming a tune as he looked at the various things hanging on the walls. Buriki leaned forward, his eyes squinted as he read an old newspaper article displayed.

"It's no good," Giran muttered. He placed his phone on his desk.

"Not a very attentive leader you got there." Buriki snickered under his breath.

Y/n frowned at him and narrowed her eyes. "Dabi isn't in charge. He's just tasked with recruitment."

Buriki hummed. "Well, I suppose you gotta find someone else then, huh."

Y/n sighed as she thought about what to do. She found herself in a bit of a bind. Buriki showed promise at Tartarus, if not for Dabi grabbing her at the last second, he could have seriously hurt her. She knew she couldn't turn him away. At the same time, there was no one to make the decision. Dabi wasn't answering, and there was no way she was going to take him home with her just so Tomura could speak with him.

Y/n looked at Giran and held out her hand. "May I borrow your phone? Gonna call Tomura."

The older villain shrugged and slid the phone closer to y/n. She got up and took it to the other room. As she closed the door, y/n could hear Buriki talking to Giran.

Y/n pressed her back against the door as she looked through the contacts list for Tomura. The phone rang, and she waited for an answer.

"What do you want? I'm taking a nap," Tomura snapped. The corners of y/n's lips twitched into a quick smile. It's been a while since she's heard Tomura complain about something petty.

"Tomura," y/n began; "I don't know what to do."

Tomura didn't reply. She wasn't sure if it was because he was continuing his silent treatment or if he was simply waiting for her to elaborate.

"This guy had escaped from Tartarus. He wants to join us." Y/n felt a bit more at ease after explaining everything.

"Us?" Something about his tone sounded off. She wondered if he was jealous.

"There is no us," Tomura said. Y/n felt her heart practically stop.

"Excuse me?" Y/n's voice cracked. She couldn't believe what she had just heard. The way Tomura had pulled her close when they reconnected left y/n in denial. She easily felt how much Tomura missed her, even if he didn't say anything. "I don't know what has been going on with you, but we can work it out."

"Work it out? What the hell are you going on about?" Tomura snapped.

Y/n stopped as soon as she heard his tone. She recognized that tone, mad but equally as confused. "You didn't break up with me just now?"

"I-" Tomura stopped and sighed. "I don't know how someone so smart can be so stupid." Y/n has never felt more relieved to be called stupid.

"So, what did you mean by that?" y/n asked.

"I have officially removed you from The League of Villains." Y/n was confused. Tomura hadn't said anything to her since he had taken her home. In fact, he barely even looked at her. This was the first time he had tried to hold a conversation with y/n, he decided to drop this bombshell.

Was this permanent? Did she mess up at Tartarus so bad that Tomura no longer wanted her to work with everyone else? Was he just mad at her? Maybe it was because of Tomoru? Perhaps Tomura realized y/n couldn't simply drop everything and stop being a mother to do things for The League of Villains? Questions were swirling around in her head like a tornado.

Tomura continued to explain himself. "I want you to begin working towards your own group under your lead. With the two of us working together, we should be able to slowly extend our reach."

This has to be some kind of joke. Y/n chuckled. "I can't do that."

"Why not? Mostly everyone in The League will follow your lead if you gave them an order," Tomura replied.

"Dabi?" she asked.

"I said mostly everyone, didn't I?" By the sounds of it, Tomura didn't appreciate her mentioning Dabi. Y/n stopped trying to argue this with Tomura. While she did feel flattered that he had so much faith in her, she didn't think she could ever live up to his expectations.

"Everyone has to start somewhere. There was a time where The League of Villains was just Kurogiri and me. I think it's time for you to follow suit." Y/n wished he had talked to her earlier about this.

"I under-" y/n cut herself off. That would have been a lie. Y/n didn't understand what Tomura was up to, the only thing she could do was follow his lead and hope Tomura knew what he was talking about. "I see."

Tomura hung up the phone, and y/n listened to the steady dial tone in her ear. Her hand fell to her side as she stared at the wall. Out of all the plans Tomura had concocted over the past few years, this one terrified her down to her core.

Y/n left the little side room and rejoined the two villains. The first thing she noticed was Buriki's voice. "So, I look at this guy. Y'know that the type. Real biggin that likes to think he's the meanest guy in the room— thinks he's invincible."

He was sitting in the chair across from Giran's desk, typically where his clients would sit. Giran had his head in his hands, his gaze down and away from Buriki. "Do ya ever shut up?"

Buriki suddenly stopped in the middle of his story and chuckled. "No, not really. I like the sound of my voice."

He tapped his chin as he thought. "Now, where was I? Oh! So, I says to him..." Giran groaned as soon as Buriki continued talking.

"Looks like you two are having a great time." Y/n walked by the two villains and sat down on the couch. Giran had a pained expression on his face.

Buriki spun around and sat in the little chair backward. He rested his forearms on the top of its back. "So what did boss-man say?" He rested his chin on his arms and batted his eyes.

"What did you get sent to Tartarus for, exactly?" Behind Buriki, y/n saw Giran reach into his desk and pull out a bottle of painkillers. "The short version, please."

He frowned. "Seriously? You don't want to hear my harrowing tale?"

Buriki sighed. "Just for being a general menace to society, I guess. Y'know, killed some people, stole some things. Broke some rules like the bad boy I am."

Y/n couldn't tell if he was serious or not. Either way, he seemed more qualified at being a villain than y/n.

She continued on with a small, interview-like talk with the black-haired villain. She wanted details of his various crimes, no matter how small or big. Buriki seemed happy to answer all her questions.

It was just as she expected, Buriki was far more than competent. However, he had a habit of rambling.

Y/n sat still, listening to Buriki talk. She looked past him and towards Giran. He looked bored, y/n decided it was time to cut him off. "Giran, here, has a way to contact you, right?" Y/n paused. "Give me a few hours. I'll give you a call with an answer."

"I await your call with bated breath," he said. He spoke very playfully, it contrasted his rather unsettling grin.

Y/n didn't speak until Buriki had left. She waited until she heard a second door close before speaking with Giran. Once she started, y/n didn't stop. She knew she didn't have what it took to follow Tomura's footsteps.

"Not everyone is built to be a leader. An', well, you..." Giran tilted his head to the side with a frown. "I'm not sayin' you'll never get there but..."

Y/n wasn't offended by Giran's words. He was right. Ogura was her chance to act as villainous as she wanted to, and y/n defaulted to having a reasonably normal, quiet life.

"Maybe ya can convince Tomura to rethink this?" Y/n suddenly remembered Tartarus. No, if this was something Tomura was set on, then he will not change his mind.

"Shigaraki has an awful habit of throwing ya into the deep end just to see if you'll figure out what to do on your own." Giran leaned back into his seat.

"So, what're ya going to do?" he asked.

"First, I suppose I'm going to take in Buriki." Giran groaned, and y/n giggled. "What? If I can convince Tomura to change his mind, I think he'd make a good fit in The League."

"I think he'll get on their nerves," Giran mumbled. Y/n argued that she got on their nerves and made it out alright. "Ya were a different kind of irritating, though."

Giran got up from his seat. "Are ya ready to go grab Tomo and go home?"

Y/n excitedly stared out the window as the car Giran had rented drove down the road. The little building Twice had been hiding in was off in the distance. Y/n had to try to hide her excitement. A small squeak escaped her lips.

"I've missed you so, so much!" Y/n held Tomoru in her arms and carefully cuddled him. "Thank you so much for watching him. Hopefully, he wasn't too difficult."

Twice shook his head and motioned his head towards the clone cowering behind him. "Having an extra pair of hands helped."

Y/n wanted to ask Twice about her conversation with Tomura. She opened her mouth, just to stumble over her words. Y/n cleared her throat and tried again. "How many people are in The League?"

Twice raised a brow, and placed a hand on Tomoru's head, ruffling his dark h/c hair. "Does this little guy count?"

Y/n giggled. "No, of course not."

She noticed his fingers twitch as if he was mentally counting. "Well, I suppose the answer is six then. Now that Kurogiri isn't here."

He never told them. That means it's not too late to change his mind.

Before y/n could try getting herself out of the conversation, Twice spoke up. "So, do you have any plans for this little guy. Is he going to follow Shigaraki and be just like dad?"

Y/n noticed the clone looked very uncomfortable. Knowing herself as well as she did, y/n could guess that she was weirded out hearing Shigaraki and dad in the same sentence.

"Oh... you know." Y/n's voice faded a bit, she had spent many nights thinking about this, but she never came to a conclusion. "I guess we'll see. I want Tomoru to pick his own path."

Twice seemed content with her answer. Y/n said her goodbyes to the blonde villain and thanked him once again for watching the baby.

The car slowed to a stop. "If he causes ya any trouble, ya know who to call." Y/n smiled at Giran and promised he was overreacting.

She got out of the car, Tomoru in her arms, and watched Giran drive off into the distance. Y/n turned to the little shack. The door seemed like it was going to fall off its hinges at any moment. Y/n wished Tomura would at least try to fix it.

Y/n peeked inside. Tomura was sitting down, reading. "Hey there," y/n greeted. Tomura glanced up and then back down to his book.

Y/n felt like she knew Tomura very well. However, his most recent behavior was not like him.

She sat down next to Tomura. "Can we talk?" No reply. It was as if he couldn't hear her. "Tomura?"

Regardless, y/n began telling Tomura about what was on her mind. "Well, I'm not sure if I can lead my own group. I'm happy that you have so much faith in me, but I'm not so sure that's a good idea. I don't think I'd ever be ready for something like that. Why not reconsider? Wouldn't Dabi be a better pick?" Y/n stopped talking. As expected, Tomura didn't reply.

Y/n wanted to hear him talk. Just one word. She glanced down at Tomoru. "Do you want to hold the baby?"

"No," he replied. Y/n knew that question would get an answer.

Y/n got to her feet. She cuddled Tomoru close to her as she entered the bedroom. Y/n wrapped him up in his blanket and stayed by his side until he fell asleep.

She carefully closed the door, trying not to accidentally wake up Tomoru. Y/n returned to her seat. "So, do you want to talk to me now?"

He looked up from his book and glanced over to her. She noticed his eyes flash up and down. "What are your opinions on that guy?"

Figures. Y/n had a feeling that he'd talk to her if Tomoru was in the other room.

"Buriki?" Y/n paused and tried to think of the best way to summarize him. "He seems... capable. His quirk is strong too."

"I think you will–" y/n stopped herself. She continued in a lighthearted tone. "Well, you won't like him. I think you' ll appreciate his skills."

Tomura was picking under his nails. "For now, you will be borrowing The League of Villains' as a namesake. I will be observing what you do."

He glanced up from his nails. "You rarely fail me, I expect results from you."
