CH 2: Unforgetful (edited)

"And this is our living room," Arthur stated, giving a smile to the two young children. "It's very...nice," Alfred said with a shaky voice, holding onto Matthew's hand tightly. "Hey now, there is nothing to be scared of," Francis said with a soothing voice, trying to calm the frightened children.

Alfred kept Matthew behind his back for protection, he really did want a family but he still couldn't trust these two men who were soon going to be his and Matthew's new parents. "I think it's time to ask them Arthur.." Francis sighed sadly as he backed away from the twins. "...alright, boys can you sit on the couch please?" Arthur asked.

Alfred and Matthew did as they were told and sat quietly with their hands still glued to each other. "This might be difficult to ask but...what happened to your old family?" Arthur asked slowly, Alfred stayed silent as the memories played back in his head, he remembered them so clearly, almost as if it had happened yesterday.

"Our mom was killed three years ago...I barely managed to take Mattie out of the house with me before the men found us, luckily we made it out together, now the only thing that matters is Matthew's safety!" Alfred exclaimed through a sob that shook his tiny body. "Mommy's gone..." Matthew mumbled with tears of his own. "I can't trust you guys because I know that you'll just end up taking us back to that orphanage.." Alfred stated and wiped away his tears.

Arthur and Francis sat on the couch and wrapped their arms around the distressed children, they both hummed quietly as they stroked the children's soft hair and reassured them that everything was going to be okay, they promised that they would never go back to that horrible orphanage.

Alfred had soon fallen asleep in Arthur's arms and Matthew was sniffling as he wiped away his tears, Arthur carried Alfred in his arm and rocked him back and forth slowly as he walked into his room where he gently tucked him in and kissed his forehead.

As soon as Matthew stopped crying he looked beside him to see that Alfred was gone, he panicked wondering where Alfred had gone, he had never been separated from Alfred before so this new sense of fear came over him like a ton of bricks. "A-Alfred? Where's Alfred?" He whimpered as fresh new tears filled his eyes. "What's wrong Matthew?" Francis ask suddenly with concern.

He gently picked up the crying child and held him up. "Hey stop crying, be a good boy." Matthew had stopped the small hiccups that escaped his lips but when he looked down at Francis his eyes held a look of sadness which terribly broke Francis's heart. He had rushed toward the room where Arthur was about to leave when the door suddenly slammed open and a worried looking Francis burst in.

"Arthur I need your help!" Francis said alou. "Quiet down you git! I just put Alfred to bed." He whispered harshly at him. "Ah..sorry." Francis apologized with embarrassment. "Now what is it you wanted?" Arthur asked quietly. "It's Matthew...he won't stop crying..it just breaks my heart." Francis held the teary Matthew in front of Arthur.

Arthur's hard gaze had softened when he met with Matthew's dull, puffy, and tear-filled eyes. "What's wrong Matthew?" he asked in a soothing tone, he gently took Matthew in his arms and held him close to his chest. "You must be tired right? Go to sleep darling you and your brother are safe..." Arthur hummed quietly until the small child had fallen asleep.

"H-how did you do that?" Francis asked in awestruck. "Idiot..." Arthur muttered as he moved the hair away from Matthews' face and kissed his forehead before laying him next to his brother. "...were you holding him closely while you soothed him?" he raised a brow at the Frenchman. "N..no not exactly.." Francis muttered feeling a bit of guilt rise in him.

Arthur sighed and shook his head. "No matter what you tell a child they will always feel alone, that's why you must always hold them close..if you don't hold them close they will feel scared and won't stop crying," Arthur explained as he gazed down at the sleeping children. "You're just like a real mother," Francis smirked and wrapped his arms around the short man's waist placing a kiss on his cheek. "Y-you frog!" Arthur pushed away with a flustered face. "You know you love me, Arthur..." The Frenchman purred.

When they quietly left the room so the boys could sleep peacefully Francis was rubbing a red mark on his cheek. "You didn't have to slap me.." He murmured with tears forming at the corners of his eyes, Arthur sighed and crossed his arms, he then stood on his toes and kissed the mark on Francis's cheek. "There...now stop pouting you frog." He mumbled with a bright blush.

"Drop the bottle you wine bastard!" was the first thing Matthew and Alfred heard when they awoke, Matthew cowered at the many noises of furniture falling and breaking, it reminded him of the day he left his mother, the many furniture that was thrown as the huge shadow men attempted to capture him.

"Its okay Mattie, no one is coming for us." Alfred soothed his brother as soon as he saw the fear that glazed over his violet eyes, but Alfred seemed to have noticed something else in his eyes. He scooted over to Matthew and examined his face. "Matthew...where's your light?" he asked in concern. "M-my what?" Matthew stammered in confusion.

"Your happy, the light in your eyes is gone..." Alfred explained with a frown beginning to form on his lips. "Let's go tell Arthur!" Alfred insisted and grabbed Matthew's hand as he hopped off the bed and dashed out the room where they both stopped suddenly when that saw Arthur helping a funny looking Francis to the couch. "Bonjour boys!" Francis said with a slurry voice.

Alfred and Matthew both stayed silent wondering why Francis was acting weird, Francis staggered toward them and unexpectedly scooped up Matthew from the ground and hugged him close. "Good morning Matthieu!" Francis cooed, Matthew turned his head away from Francis's face that was inches away from his own, his breath reeked of wine.

"Put Mattie down please Mr.Francis I think you're scaring him," Alfred said and tugged at Francis's shirt. "Oh alright.." He pouted and released his grip on Matthew. "Wai!-" Matthew had tumbled down to the ground and landed with a loud thump. "Mattie!" Alfred rushed to his brother and helped him up. "What the bloody hell is going- Matthew are you okay!?" Arthur had rushed to the cowering boys.

"I go to the kitchen for five minutes and things start falling apart?" He sighed and angrily turned to the red-faced Francis who was tipping over slightly. "You're coming with me." He pulled at the Frenchman's arm and dragged him along. "Ooh, am I going to be punished?" he asked seductively. "You're sleeping on the floor tonight you frog..." Arthur muttered, and just like that, they were gone.

"Francis was acting weird...just like how our old daddy would be.." Matthew whispered quietly in a scared tone Alfred's eyes had widened and he gripped on Matthew's shoulders. "Don't ever mention our old daddy, ever again!" he demanded through gritted teeth. "O..okay..I'm sorry Alfred.."

The only thing that terrified Alfred the most was their old father, he'd rather die than face him. "I'm sorry too Mattie.." He looked down. "But never mention that demon again..."
