Chapter 22

Juliet roughly pushed Kana away from the door and entered. She did not want to believe what Kana was saying, hoping it was all a lie. Ethan had sounded really sincere when he talked to her. Juliet doubted he was that good a liar. Kana gasped and closed the door then followed Juliet.

"You little-"

"Where is he?" Juliet asked, not willing to verbally acknowledge the fact that Kana was wearing his blue shirt, the one she used to like so much. She hoped he'd never wear it again.

She headed straight to the bedroom where she found Ethan lying on the bed, rumpled sheets around him. They had probably just made love but Juliet was too furious to care about that. It was not what she had to focus on. Her anger increased when he just stared at her, not saying a word. Kana waltzed into the room.

"Wanna join us," she asked, narrowing her eyes. She touched Juliet's shoulder and Juliet pushed her hand away. There was no reason to pretend to like her. Juliet's fingers balled into fists and she felt like punching her face but decided against the idea.

"As you can see, he doesn't want to talk to you, Juliet. Why don't you leave us alone, for once and for all? None of us want to see your face around here."

That hurt Juliet but she knew Kana loved Ethan almost as much as she did. She was not at fault in the situation but it was Ethan who had created the problem. It couldn't be that hard to make a choice between girls with very dissimilar personalities.

"For your information, I don't want to see your face, either." Juliet snapped then stared at the boy she loved more than anything else in the world. "Ethan, what's going on? Did you lie to me again?"

"I'm sorry," he said, heaving a sigh. "Can we talk later? Now is not a good time as you can see."

"Why is that?" She asked. "Is it because she's here with you and you don't want her to hear the lies you wanna tell me? How long are you going to keep this up, you bastard?"

Kana was silent. Juliet figured it was because she wanted to seem like a good girl who doesn't yell.

"I'll come over to your place tomorrow," he said, dismissively. He did not bother to answer her questions. "Give me time to think. All this is so stressful. Why don't you both leave me alone?"

Without saying another word, Juliet marched out. She had humiliated herself enough for the day. Besides, she needed to think and clear her clouded mind. There was only one solution for her problems. Stop seeing Ethan but it was proving hard to make that decision.

Near the apartment complex was a small park. She went in and sat in an isolated corner on the grass, away from the prying eyes of people. She let the tears stream freely, making no attempt to conceal her sadness. She soon found herself dialling her mother's number.

"Mom?" She said, wiping her eyes.

"Julie!" her mother said, excitement audible in her voice. "How are you, my darling?"

"I'm okay, mum." She lied. A boy passing by frowned but continued to run away from his little friends who were after him.

"Stop lying to me because you don't sound okay. Did something happen to you?"

"Nothing happened," the teenager said, watching the group of youngsters run around the park with so much happiness, something she could never have. "I'm alright, only wanted to check on you and find out how everyone else is doing. How is the baby?"

"All of us are okay. It's you I'm worried about. I know you're suffering and I want you to share your problems with me. I'm your mother and that means you can tell me anything. Is it about a boy?"

"Bye mom," Juliet said and hang up before her mother could make say the truth. She used her t-shirt to wipe her face until it was free of tears.

"I can live through this," Juliet told herself when a thought of Octavio crossed her mind. In her mind, the name Octavio was now synonymous with the word suicide. She did not want to end up like him.

She never knew she could bear so much pain. Standing up, she walked around the park, looking at people laughing with their loved ones, hiding so much pain underneath. No, she would be strong like they were. She had come so far and couldn't afford to end her life in a moment's weakness.

For how long was she going to cry over a boy who didn't want her? How long would she let her heart get broken by him? Juliet decided that enough was enough. She stood up abruptly and walked like a girl with a purpose. She had to get rid of Ethan for once and for all. She had to tell him to stay a thousand miles away from her. She did not want to listen to any more of his lies.

She had almost reached when she met Mikki who looked like she had just arrived. Juliet looked around and saw a taxi that was probably waiting for Mikki.

"What are you doing here?" Juliet asked, standing in front of Mikki.

"I've been looking for Ethan," Mikki answered breathlessly. "I don't know if he's in his room or not."

"Why are you looking for him?" Juliet narrowed her eyes. "What has happened? Why don't you call him?"

"I'll tell you on the way," she grabbed Juliet by the wrist. "I don't have time to go look for Ethan. He's not picking up my calls. Who knows where he could be right now?"

Mikki led her to a waiting taxi. Juliet sighed and reluctantly got in the back. Mikki joined her.

"Okay, tell me now."

Juliet frowned when Mikki started crying. She put her right hand around Mikki.
