YeongMi sat on the roof. It had become her best version of a safe place at the dreaded school. She found herself letting her composure down when she was there, usually sitting on the ledge and thinking of her very own weaknesses.
Anyone who really knew anything knew that they could find her there.
She was lucky that no one did, so no one would come looking for her and happen upon the scene of her pity party. She couldnt have them knowing that she actually had working emotions.
It was a place where she could be alone, as sad and weak as she wanted, and no one would ever know.
Or so she thought.
Someone was watching from the stairs as she held the cigarette to her lips, her thumb furiously struggling with the lighter. No matter how much she tried, she couldn't get the flame to ignite.
The lighter was probably empty, but YeongMi didn't consider the logical reasons, instead bitterly cursing the world for never letting anything come easily to her. The ever present scowl that turned her into an unapproachable beast fell, and she allowed a very pitiful sigh to escape her relaxed lips.
In her frustration, she threw the cigarette to the ground, leaning her head in her hands as she took deep breaths to try, and fail, to calm herself.
She stared over the ledge, and, like countless times before, she found herself pondering her own existence in all of it's insignificance.
"You know, maybe it's a sign that you shouldn't smoke."
"Or maybe it's a sign that the world wants to ruin my life because it hates me."
"Well, not the whole world," the boy smiled a little as he stood next to her. "Maybe like, half," a small chuckle, "or two thirds, but not all of it."
YeongMi, against her better judgement, allowed herself to laugh at the sad attempt at consolation.
Maybe she didn't have to distance herself so much. After all, simple conversations wouldn't hurt, right?
Hoseok made it seem harmless.
YeongMi gave him a sly smirk, "so, do you often spend your time watching me up here?"
"Only when you're struggling," a cheeky smile, "so, yes, a lot."
YeongMi tried to be upset, but she was distracted by the way his face lit up when he smiled.
She shoved his shoulder lightly, biting her lip to hide the smile erupting on her face.
It was no use, Hoseok noticed immediately. The fact only made him smile more, and the cycle of distraction was continued.
"So, what did you come here for?"
"We've been through this, haven't we?" Hoseok's face grew serious. "I know that Namjoon hurt you, but I also know that this is more serious than that. You'd never be this upset just because of a boy, you're more than that."
YeongMi shrugged, turning away to stare at the clouds. She didn't want the conversation to turn serious, as it had, and now the gravity of it all was sinking on her shoulders, compressing her into a small ball of bitter sadness.
"I want," Hoseok ignored the voice in his head telling him to hold back. He was done suppressing his feelings; Namjoon had blown his chance, and now it was his turn. And he'd be damned if he blew it too.
"I want to be the one you come to for help. I want you to trust me, more than anyone else."
YeongMi wasn't sure what to say; she felt the sudden urge to blush, something very unlike her.
"Hoseok, I - "
"Please, I know you don't ask for help. You seem to be convinced that you don't need it, but I don't believe you. Everyone needs help, especially the ones that don't ask."
"Hoseok - "
He gave a sad smile, "as much as I love hearing you say my name, the thing I really want to hear is a yes."
"Yes to what?"
Hoseok seemed nervous, which made YeongMi nervous herself. What was he trying to say?
"Dance with me?"
He was trying to divert her attention, she knew, but she momentarily allowed him, stepping into his offered arms.
"Yes."
Instead of their usual dances, full of energy and activity, Hoseok instead held YeongMi close to his chest, like the treasure he had begun to consider her as.
They swayed delicately back and forth, and YeongMi felt the need to hide her face in the crook of his neck to avoid the intensity in his face as he stared at her.
But she didn't mind it.
She could feel a heartbeat echoing in her eyes, delicate and crazed like a newborn rabbit running for the first time.
She wasn't sure if it was hers or Hoseok's, but she didn't mind either possibility.
She did mind, however, when Hoseok let go of her, stepping back to put distance between them, as if he was scared of their proximity.
"YeongMi, I," Hoseok found that his palms were sweating, and he rubbed them on his pants before anxiously fiddling with his tie.
YeongMi covered his hands, pulling them down to his waist before letting go, and Hoseok tried not to dwell on his disappointment at the abrupt ending of contact.
He squared his shoulders in an attempt to gain confidence before starting again. "YeongMi, I stood to the side, because I knew that you liked Namjoon, and he liked you, and I didn't want to be that guy, and risk losing both of you as friends."
"What are you saying, Hoseok?"
Wasn't it obvious?
"I'm saying that I let Namjoon have you. But, now, I'm not going to sit still anymore. It's not fair. I like you, okay? More than a friend should like another friend."
"You're saying.... that is, you mean - "
"I mean that I'm into you, maybe more than I should be. I'm saying that, if you'd let me, I'd love to be your proper boyfriend. Give me the chance to show you how a guy should treat his girlfriend. Let me do what Namjoon couldn't."
She wished he wouldn't keep mentioning Namjoon; it only confused her further.
YeongMi felt her head spinning as she attempted to understand everything that was happening.
On the one hand, she felt strange jumping from boy to boy, especially those in her would-be friend group.
But on the other hand, there was a warmth that grew in her when Hoseok was around, and she didn't want to let go of that.
It was unlike anything she had experienced before, and she found herself craving it.
While Namjoon and YeongMi were two clashing storms, filled with stimulation and intense passion, Hoseok was a peaceful beach to counter her crazed sea.
Maybe it wasn't so crazy to think they could work.
And maybe YeongMi wanted them to.
Disappointment sprouted in Hoseok's stomach at her lack of response, but he didn't regret confessing. It was a relief to speak what had been pressing on his heart for months.
"Well, you can think about it, at least," Hoseok found it hard to look at her, so he stared at the ground, pursing his lips.
This is crazy, YeongMi thought.
"No, Hoseok."
"Oh. Well, I'm sorry to have bothered you," now regret was setting in, and Hoseok's gut was turning in lousy swirls.
"Wait, I meant no, I'm not thinking about it. I'm done thinking," YeongMi stepped closer to Hoseok.
Unbeknownst to the other, both of their hearts skipped a beat.
Delicately, YeongMi placed a hand on Hoseok's cheek, leaning her head to rest against his.
Before she could change her mind a thousand times, she leaned the rest of the way, allowing their lips to meld together.
They fit surprisingly well, and, just like in their dances, they complemented each others actions in a pleasantly delicious way.
The perfect partners.
Hoseok pulled away just enough to breathe, his delighted exhales brushing against her skin. "So, is that a yes?"
YeongMi laughed, embarrassed, and hid her face in the crook of his neck. "Stupid."
*** Since I know next to me, you're the biggest fan of HoMi (I had to cause it's like homie ya feel homie)
