59. Approachable
**** I posted this scene from Easy A because this version of Olive reminds me of YeongMi ****
YeongMi found that her mood was greatly increased by the time classes were starting.
Bora's bitter words were completely erased from her mind, and as she walked down the halls, the usual confident spring was present in her step.
She felt the usual scrutiny, other student's eyes on her, as was expected based on her current infamy.
What wasn't expected, however, was the surprising amounts of students that were actually speaking to her.
"What's up, YeongMi?"
"Great party yesterday!"
"Hey YeongMi, want to come to my room tonight? I'm doing a small get-together, only the coolest people allowed."
Since when was YeongMi actually approachable?
She wasn't sure how to handle this newfound positive popularity, but she took it in stride.
She nodded her head ever so slightly, so that the students may think that she acknowledged them, but she kept silent as she walked into class. She sat next to Jin, and Yoongi turned around to face her, a glint in his eyes.
"What, you're not going to talk to your new fans?" Yoongi was smirking at her, clearly finding the situation amusing, although YeongMi felt a little awkward.
"Well, I wouldn't want them to think that we were friends or anything. Can you imagine, how horrible." YeongMi returned his smirk, and Jin slightly smiled at the two, though he shook his head, as if he was judging them.
Namjoon walked in stiffly, his shoulders tilted as he rubbed his neck in pain.
Well, that's what he gets for falling asleep on his work desk.
He took the empty seat beside YeongMi, and she stared forward, struggling to find an appropriate greeting for him.
Should she say hi? Should she smile? Should she ignore him?
Her thoughts were halted when a shrill yelp sounded through the room, and Bora was standing behind Namjoon, fretting over him as she massaged his shoulders.
"Baby, you work too hard. You need more rest."
Bora being right only irritated YeongMi more.
YeongMi quickly turned away, trying to block out the younger girl's annoying voice.
Twiddling a pencil in her hand, she began flipping it between each finger.
Noticing that the students behind her were staring, she grinned, turning to stare back at them.
They blinked abruptly, turning away, but she could see their eyes shifting to continue looking at her.
She smiled coyly, holding the pencil up to her face, taking the end in her mouth.
Before she could tease the students, the pencil was jerked out of her mouth, and she turned to find Jin giving her a stern face, his eyebrows raised.
"Leave the kids alone, YeongMi."
At least he didn't seem too upset about her attitude towards him during their spring break.
She shrugged, turning to give them one last look before facing forward.
As the day passed, more and more people tried to converse with YeongMi.
Eventually, she began to get irritated with the attention. It reminded her too much of the attention she got due to her family.
And even though it seemed to simply be because of the party, she found herself growing more and more paranoid.
YeongMi leaned against the wall during break, and she went to text her brother, but a voice interrupted her plans, just as she pulled open her messages.
"Who's 'Loser'? And 'Angel'? Are they your best friends? You text them a lot. Can you give me a nickname?"
YeongMi took a moment to thank god that she had changed Seungkwan and Jeonghan's contact names to inconspicuous nicknames after Bora and Soma had found her talking to them on the beach.
She then turned to glare at the young girl, who had been leaning to see around YeongMi's arm, at the now dark screen.
"Who the fuck do you think you are?"
The young girl clasped her hands together in embarrassment, rocking on her heels.
"My friends and I played rock paper scissors. The loser had to come over and talk to you. But you talked back! That means Tsuya owes me 50 won."
YeongMi quirked an eyebrow, peering behind the girl to see the huddle of giggling students.
She took them as the friends.
"Only 50 won? That's weak. Aren't I scarier than that?"
She was only half joking.
"Oh, of course. It's just, that's all she has on her right now." The young girl looked like she was worried to hurt YeongMi's ego, causing the elder to laugh slightly.
"Say, what's your name kid?"
The young girl was surprised, and it took her a moment to speak. "Um, Pyo Yeri, first year, born-"
YeongMi interrupted the girl before she could start spewing out the rest of the unnecessary introduction. "Well, Pyo Yeri, consider yourself the winner, not loser. What did your friends gain from this? Nothing. What did you gain?"
Yeri thought for a moment, "your attention?"
YeongMi smiled, "if that's the best you can think of, sure. See you around, kid."
When YeongMi walked by the huddle of Yeri's friends, she allowed her eyes to rake just over their heads.
Shaking her head at their victorious cries, she stood a little taller.
Maybe all this attention wasn't so bad, after all.
