51. A Pretty Little Problem
"Well well well. Yi YeongMi. Why am I not surprised to see you here?"
YeongMi rolled her eyes as she sat in the desk in front of her teacher. "Considering that you called me here, I would be concerned if you were surprised to see me."
The teacher ignored her sarcastic remark, instead smoothing out her skirt, "I want to be the first to congratulate you. You're officially the worst student this school has ever seen."
YeongMi smirked carelessly, clashing with the rest of her face, which was pulled tightly in faux concern. "You mean I wasn't before?"
The teacher suddenly leaned forward, slamming her hands onto YeongMi's desk, staring down at her un-amused student. "You're not as arrogant as you pretend to be. Your little act can fool your friends, but I'm not stupid."
Well, that's up to opinion, really.
"I don't think I understand you miss. Are you congratulating me, or punishing me?"
The teacher shook her head, tired of YeongMi's act. "Well, those two seem to be the same for you."
YeongMi winked, clapping obnoxiously, "caught on quickly, miss."
The teacher pulled back in annoyance, sitting on her desk and staring at the problematic student, trying to figure out what to do with her.
The classroom was empty except for the two strong willed women. The difference between them was how they used their stubborn dedication.
For the teacher, she used it to accomplish high standards and become a respectable educator.
For YeongMi, it was used to cause as much trouble as she saw fit.
They could almost have been friends in another life, had it not been for their opposing actions.
"Well, I'm sure you know why you're here."
Well, YeongMi would never admit that, just in case she said the wrong thing and ended up getting in trouble for something she got away with.
The teacher sighed at YeongMi's defiant silence.
"A fellow student has expressed concern that you are deliberately destroying their property."
YeongMi laughed; Bora couldn't prove shit. Even if she was filming her room, YeongMi wasn't stupid. She covered her face. Bora had no chance, YeongMi knew what she was doing.
"Well, I don't know what to say," a complete lie, "this is my first time hearing about this problem."
The teacher shook her head, unsurprised, but still disappointed. "You know, all your troubles are going to catch up with you one day."
Oh did YeongMi know that. She knew.
"Well, until then, this has truly been fun."
The teacher spoke before YeongMi could stand up and leave. "All these months and I still can't understand how you can be related to your parents."
YeongMi's face soured; she could deal with contemptful teachers, but her family was a taboo subject.
Her hands immediately clenched on the desk, the tips of her fingers turning red from the pressure, exposing her anger at the teacher's words.
"Don't speak about them." Her voice was low, pushed out through her teeth and dangerously commanding, despite YeongMi's inferior position.
The teacher was pleased to find a topic that would get a genuine reaction from her otherwise frozen student. "It's strange, I could understand your parents wanting you to be nothing, unknown, but why would you want them to be nothing, keep them a secret?"
YeongMi only glared, her heart hammering in hectic patterns. She hated even thinking about her parents. Her stomach felt tight, and a sour, disgusting taste rose to her mouth, tasting suspiciously like bile.
"If you tell the school, your career will be over, forever. It will ruin you. I will ruin you." YeongMi's threat was charged, despite the fact that she seemed more afraid of the situation than the teacher, who had gained confidence from YeongMi's uncharacteristic outburst.
The teacher ignored her, much to YeongMi's annoyance. "And your brother, well, he's deserving of the name. Very successful and likeable. But you, how do you fit into the family?"
"I don't. That's probably why I left." That was definitely why she left. God, did she have to spell it out to everyone?
The teacher laughed to herself, not even looking at the furious student, making her feel invalidated, and thus fueling her anger.
YeongMi took a moment, trying to calm herself down. The teacher just wanted a reaction, and YeongMi was playing into her hands.
"You're just a pretty little problem, aren't you?"
YeongMi sneered, her eyes glaring while her lips pulled up into what could have been a smile, were it not for the tight lines exposing that her jaw was clenched. She was furious.
She stood up, standing dangerously close, waiting for the startled teacher to look her in the eyes before she walked out.
She only paused by the door to leave the teacher with one last retort. "You think I'm pretty? That's cute."
