Chapter 41:
"That sounded like quite the fight." Uncle Aiden wrapped his arm around me on the couch and pulled me into him.
"He's cheating on me," I said, sniffling like a little kid who needed a bandaid.
"Yeah, I sort of figured that was what you were fighting about when you mentioned the separation of certain body parts." Uncle Aiden laughed.
Why was he laughing? This was not a joke. Cameron broke my heart. Uncle Aiden should be planning his demise with me instead of acting like I was performing standup comedy for his entertainment.
"He's evil and I hate him." I cried.
"He's not and you don't really mean that."
"I do. I have never meant it more. He's been playing me. He doesn't care about me."
"No offense Jess, I love you and I will always be team Jessa, but I think you are wrong on this one. I know what type of man he is. He's not the type of guy who goes and runs around with other women on the side. He wouldn't even know how to talk to another girl who isn't you. You have to trust good ole' Uncle Aiden on this one, Sweet Pea. That guy is madly in love with you." Uncle Aiden pulled me in tighter.
"He said some really mean things to me." I sniffed into his shoulder.
"It's not an excuse, but it's what we idiotic men tend to do when we are fighting for our lives. Not a single one of us is perfect. I'm close, but I still have had my fair share of dumb comments that have gotten me time on the couch. If I'm not mistaken, you might have said a few of those things back to him."
I hated when Uncle Aiden decided to pull the wise, comforting voice out. It was always like a roadblock that stopped me in my tracks.
"I can't help it sometimes. I just say things I don't mean because it makes me feel better when I'm mad." I used my Uncle Aiden's shirt as a tissue. I hoped he didn't notice the snot wad on his sleeve.
"Yeah, that's your dad in you. He is notoriously bad for saying all the wrong things. You should ask your mother about that someday." He held me next to him tightly and wouldn't let me get up. I relaxed almost instantly when he ran his hand over my arm softly. Uncle Aiden was always like this. There was something about him that was just always so calming.
A few minutes later, the door slammed open and my Dad was pushing Cam back into the house by his neck like he was eight years old.
The cooler, more collected Jessa left the building immediately when I saw Cam's gray eyes flash in my direction. I wanted to jump over the coffee table and box his ears until he was seeing stars.
"Sit down," Dad yelled at Cam, pointing to the chair. Cam stalked over pouting and sat down.
I locked locked eyes with Cameron and we commenced an anger-filled staring contest.
"Which one of you two is going to tell me what the hell is going on?" Dad crossed his arms and looked between us.
"He's cheating on me." I blurted out.
"Am not." He said back.
"Are too." I countered.
"I am not cheating on you."
"I swear, I am going to ground both of your asses if you don't shut up and have an adult conversation." Dad threatened.
"Gabby told me when she was at Ron's house that she saw Cam go to a room with Kelly and he came back out asking for condoms. She even sent me a picture of him and Kelly next to his bike." I put it all out there. If everyone wanted the facts, there they were.
"Go ahead, Dad, punch him in the face for me." Bad Jessa was cheering him on with pom-poms and a bullhorn.
"Jessa, I haven't even been to Ron's since that night we were in the pool together." Cameron tried to defend himself.
"Then explain the picture, Cameron." I crossed my arms over my chest.
He pulled out his phone and opened up his Facebook page and threw it at me.
"You mean this one?" He said snarkily.
I looked at it with wide eyes. There it was, the same exact picture. Ron posted it over six months ago with the caption. "Our little boy is a man. He finally learned how to ride a bike without training wheels. Congrats Nash!" There were about twenty other photos with different people in them admiring his new toy.
"Oh," I said, blushing.
"Wait, who's Gabby?" Dad asked, raising his eyebrow.
"My friend I met at group. She has been hooking up with Cam's partner, Ron." I informed him. I forgot he hadn't met Gabby yet and it wasn't like I even talked about her much around him.
"So you are going to tell me you were going to believe some girl you met at a group for addicts over your best friend who has never even lied to you once?" My dad looked over at me, frowning. He had a valid argument, but he was wrong about one thing. I felt the need to point it out.
"He did lie to me." I sounded like a child and even I knew that.
"I only lied to you that day to get you better. You know I wouldn't have done it if there was any other way. I would do it again if I had to. I am never going to apologize for loving you too damn much to watch you suffer, Jessa." Cam confessed.
"I love you too, Cami." I smiled and wiped the tears from my cheeks.
"Seriously? That's it? That's the end of the fight?" Dad asked. He was looking stupefied at Uncle Aiden like he couldn't believe it.
"Well, he did say a lot of nice words. We should probably take notes." Uncle Aiden laughed.
"Riley would never give up that easily."
"You guys like to fight. Just admit it." Uncle Aiden's eyes were just slits now from his amusement with himself.
"Only because the making up part is fun." My dad paused as he thought about what he just said a second longer. He turned to Cameron and stuck his finger out. "Do not make up with my daughter in my house."
"No, sir. I would never dream of it." Cam's eyes flickered to me.
He was thinking about it.
"And I don't ever want to see or hear about that tattoo again. Am I clear?" Dad added.
"Yes, sir." Cameron blushed.
"Well, Ezra, old man. I think we did our good deed for the day. We should leave these kids to talk. I think they are back under control. Are you ready to come help me now or do you want to stall some more and make unimpressive Dad threats?" Uncle Aiden raised his eyebrow at him.
"I'm not stalling." He grumbled.
"You are. If you keep it up, I'm calling your wife to tell her." Uncle Aiden threatened.
"I will hang you upside down in my garage by your toes if you even think about calling her." My Dad's face darkened.
"Then grab your walker and let's go."
Uncle Aiden patted my leg and used it to help stand up. His hand brushed the side of my head tenderly. He was silently telling me not to give up and that everything was going to be alright.
After he and my dad left, I looked back over to Cam, who was sitting silently in the corner, still sulking. His eyes were puffy and red, just like mine.
"If you aren't seeing someone else, then why won't you touch me anymore?" I asked.
"Is that what this is about? Is that why you were so quick to believe her instead of me?" He shook his head in disbelief.
"No, yes...a little. I don't know." I fumbled.
I was confused myself.
"Jess, I'm afraid to trigger you right now since you are just coming back. I have been scared this whole time that what we did together that night set you off. I felt like I pushed you too far. I was afraid I would do it again." He admitted.
"Oh." I wasn't expecting that to be the answer.
"It's been killing me not to touch you, but I think it's what you need right now. I want to take it slow until you feel a little better. You've been through a lot."
"Do you mind if I come over there and we makeup just a little bit?" I asked nervously.
"Just get over here." He patted his lap.
I got up from the couch and wrapped myself around him as I straddled his lap. He wrapped his arms around me as I leaned in to kiss him. I buried my body into his as he squeezed me tighter than he ever had before.
"I'm sorry, I freaked out on you." I closed my eyes and let him hold me.
"And I'm sorry I didn't talk to you sooner about how I was feeling." He squeezed my butt and let out a desperate sigh when I shifted on top of him.
"I like making up." I smiled.
"Me too."
