Chapter 20:

"You ready?" My new admirer asked me eagerly.

I should probably try to get him to remind me what his name was at some point. I know he told me what it was, but I didn't remember. Not that I would have really cared what it was anyway. He didn't mean anything to me and it was a waste of breath to ask him again.

After deliberating for a few seconds, I decided I was just going to start calling him Buzzy. It fit since he had spent the last two hours buzzing around me like a little fruit fly.

Where was a bug zapper when you needed one? I could fry him and then walk over to the big ass mosquito latched on to Cameron and take care of her too.

The mosquito was leaning in and whispering into Cameron's ear and he had a fiendish half-smile plastering his face while he looked at me.  I locked eyes with him just as he slid his hands over the inside of Kelly's thighs. She leaned back against him, panting as he caressed her skin.

My chest was tightening; I couldn't breathe as I watched. It felt like small creatures were burrowing a hole inside of my chest.  Couldn't he see what he was doing was hurting me? Did he even care?

I was already spinning and losing control of my brain. I didn't need him feeding the wild animal inside me clawing to get out. I felt the slight twinge of childish desire to hurt him back, but I wasn't going to sink down to his level.  If he wanted her, then he could fucking have her.  I wasn't going to play this game with him.

"Yeah, let's go inside the house," I said, ending my silent staring contest with Cameron from across the pool.

Buzzy jumped up triumphantly like he had just won the lottery. He had a spring in his step when he took my hand and pulled me up to his body.  I wasn't sure why he was so excited about going inside with me. I was just going to go sit on the couch and listen to him prattle on about how he once ran into a building that was on fire to save a litter of kittens. He probably had a million other bullshit stories in his repertoire that made him look like a hero.

Buzzy wrapped his arm around my waist and started leading me towards the house. He was prancing around the long way to the door to make sure everyone at the party could admire him for a few more minutes before we went inside. I was waiting for him to whip out the winks and the 'this guy' finger points at his buddies.

Buzzy was a douche sandwich.

When we got to the sliding glass door, he pulled it open and waved for me to go in first.  I was about to step past him over the threshold when someone grabbed my arm roughly and pulled me back out onto the patio. My ass would have been on the concrete if the hand wasn't holding me firmly in place.

"What the hell are you doing?" Cameron tightened his grip on my arm as he growled down at me.

I was dazed as I looked back across the pool. How did Cameron even get over here that fast? When did he get superspeed as one of his superpowers?

Kelly was sitting alone in the chair he had just occupied seconds before.  She had her hands crossed over her chest with a sour look on her face like someone had just duct-taped a whole lemon in her mouth. She was giving me the stink eye.

I flipped her off with my free hand.

"Fuck you, you skanky ass twat.  I bet your pussy smells like walrus farts." I screamed over at her.

Kelly was out of the chair in a flash and lumbering towards me like a mad cow. Ron jumped out of the pool and swooped her up to calm her down. She was yelling at him and pointing towards me as he held her back. He began dragging her out of the backyard.

Cameron grabbed the hand I was using to salute his harlot and squeezed my wrist until I stopped. He grabbed my chin between his thumb and index finger and forced it up to make me look at him.

"Where are you going?" He said low and slow. His voice was laced with anger as he stared down ferociously at me.

My eyes locked on his and I silently glared back, refusing to answer. I stood there tight-lipped, blinking at him. His face began to darken and his jaw tightened. His muscles were straining under his skin as he fought to hold himself back.

"Bring it on, Cameron Nash.  I will fuck you up." Bad Jessa had her boxing gloves on and was pushing her mouthpiece in. She was jumping up and down, loosening herself up.

"I asked you a question, Jessa Miller. Open your mouth and answer me when I talk to you."  He spat out through clenched teeth.

"Not that it is any of your business, but he is taking me inside." I snatched my arm back from Cameron and rubbed my wrist to get the circulation back. He tried to grab it again and I kicked him in his shin.

"Damnit, Jess." He hollered, rubbing the newly forming red spot.

"Do you have a problem, Nash?" Buzzy found his itty bitty balls and stepped between us when Cameron was vulnerable.

Cameron quickly forgot about his sore leg and stood up tall as he took a step closer to him. His large frame looked menacing as he was readying himself for a fight. I forgot how terrifying Cameron could be when something sent him over the edge.  He was so gentle and kind by nature; it was hard to remember this side of him existed at all.

"Yeah, I do, Ortiz. You're trying to fuck my girlfriend." Cameron bawled his fists up at his sides.

Wait. Girlfriend?  Where the hell did that come from?

"Hold up. She didn't tell me she had a boyfriend." He pointed and looked over at me, irritated.

"He is not my boyfriend," I said, crossing my arms over my chest.

"You are not going anywhere with him." Cameron grabbed my arm again and started trying to pull me away.

"Will you calm down? I am not going inside to sleep with him."

"You weren't?" Buzzy asked.

"No, what gave you that idea?" I asked disgustedly.

He looked down at my tiny bikini and raised his eyebrows.

"It's a bathing suit," I said through clenched teeth.

"A really good one." Buzzy smiled at the girls as they tried to escape again.

"Stop looking at her like that." Cameron pulled me behind his back to get between us.  He pushed the guy back into the glass doors.

"Jessa, go get in my truck now. We are leaving." Cameron looked back at me while he had Buzzy pinned by his neck.

"No. I can stay if I want to."  I argued.

"I think she doesn't want to go with you." Buzzy celebrated like that meant something.

"Shut your mouth," Cameron commanded and slammed his head back into the glass again.

I threw my hands up and walked over to an empty lounge chair.  If they wanted to get into a fight for no reason, then they could go ahead.  I was done. I was out of this.  I had enough of this drama today.

The best part about all of this was that they were too busy being tough guys to even realize I walked away.

They stood there arguing for a few more seconds before Ron got back inside the gate and broke it up.  I was waiting for one of them to cross the line and bop each other on the nose.  Ron made Cameron go into the house and he kicked Buzzy out of the backyard.

From the looks on all the other guests' faces, they were going to have a pretty interesting story to tell around the watercooler tomorrow.

This was such a lovely day. I hoped I would have another one just like it tomorrow. If I was really lucky, my whole week would be filled with these wonderful moments.

I closed my eyes and soaked in the last bit of rays of the sun.  Warm wonderfulness was toasting my skin as I tried to shut out the rest of the messed-up world around me.  My swirling thoughts were so bad that even Bad Jessa couldn't make sense of them. They were word gibberish in my brain. Right now felt like a good time to meditate to try to bring myself back into reality.

Instead, I just fell asleep by the pool.
