Chapter Three: Captured
It had been a week since the intrusion. I had found out Geoff's son had taken valuable medicine that took ages to make. Why? I had no idea. But he took it, and we were in need of supplies to make more.
So that's what I was doing. I was currently being chased by a blaze and its fireballs while I tried to retrieve some nether wart.
I found the portal and quickly jumped into it, watching the world turn purple and start swaying and shaking. I found myself back in the portal room, a couple of guards standing next to the portal. They looked up, giving me a salute, expecting an order, but I gave none.
Instead, I walked out of the room and back to the brewing station where a few people stood, preparing for the potions that were about to be made.
"Here, this is all I could retrieve," I told them. They smiled and bowed to me before reaching inside my backpack and pulling out the nether wart I got.
"This'll be just fine," A woman told me. I nodded and left the room.
I walked around the castle, not having much to do. My father was out, consulting someone, so therefore I didn't have much to do.
I looked at my clock and figured I could go out into town for a little while. I rounded up Topaz and began walking him to the castles gates.
I passed Jack along the way and offered him to come along. He accepted and walked beside me while we entered town.
Villagers bowed to me as I passed. I would give them a simple nod and continue guiding Topaz through the growing crowds of villagers. Jack would smile and wave. He was always in a good mood, always nice. I couldn't imagine being like that. I was famous around here for my short temper and anger, usually because I could win battles with monsters because of it.
I suddenly heard the galloping of horses and I looked ahead of me. I saw a couple knights riding towards me and they stopped directly in front of me.
"Prince Mogar! Your father... The King. He's been shot," One of the knights said.
I felt my heart drop. My father's... Been shot? Where? Is he alive?
Questions raced through my mind and I couldn't quite comprehend what was going on. I ordered Jack to run back and get more knights. He obeyed and I kicked Topaz as we followed the knights.
As we approached the place my father was shot, I noticed that all that was there was a puddle of blood.
And the man in green.
I dismounted Topaz and raced forward. The knights followed me and looked confused and frightened.
"The King! He was right here! And now he's gone?" One of the knights yelped.
"Find him! Find him now!" I growled at them. They obeyed and ran off with their horses.
I approached the man in green. He had his bow out, no arrows knocked in it. He appeared to be knocked out. Fury rose in my stomach as I stared down at him. He shot my father. He must've. Who else could've done it?
He started to wake and I kneeled down next to him. He blinked open his shining emerald green eyes and I knew I had to punish him now.
But as I looked into his eyes, I felt something hold me back. It was strange. I felt as though I couldn't hurt him. I've never felt this way before.
Once he realized I was who I was, his eyes shot open and he tried to scramble away. I gripped his shoulders tightly and pinned him down, still not hurting him.
"You... You shot my father," I growled at him.
"What? No I didn't!" He cried to me.
"Who else could've done it? No one else was here, except you. And you have your bow out, but no knocked arrow. You shot him. And now, you're gonna pay," I growled into his ear. I saw his eyes widen in fear as I threatened him.
I heard the galloping of horses and knew Jack had arrived with reinforcements. I still pinned down the man and I saw Jack and a couple knights run up to me.
"Knock him out," I ordered them.
They gave me a questioning look. I knew they were expecting me to do it. I usually did that sort of thing. But, they listened and Jack hit the man with the butt of his sword. The man slumped down and stopped struggling against me.
One of the knights gave me some rope and I tied the mans hands and ankles together. I picked him up and threw him over Topaz, once again careful not to hurt him, and we galloped off to the dungeon.
I blinked open my eyes to see myself laying in a bed in a freezing cobblestone room. There were iron bars over one of the walls, and two knights stood there.
I felt a massive headache come over me. I got hit in the head twice. If I didn't have a concussion, I'd be surprised. I felt the two bumps on my head and moaned at the tenderness of them.
The knights looked back at me and one of them nodded to the other. The other ran off, leaving one of the knights by themselves.
I eyed the remaining knight curiously but he stood his ground and didn't look back at me. I sighed and leaned back, groaning. My head throbbed and it was making my vision blotchy.
I heard the thumps of footsteps and when I looked up again, I saw the knight had returned with another man.
Prince Michael.
I sat up and eyed Michael curiously. He didn't return the same look, but instead glared at me. He waved the knights off and they both bowed to him before leaving.
"You. You are in so much trouble," Michael growled at me.
"I believe that's the reason I'm here?" I mumbled cockily. Michael gave me a displeased face before wrapping his hands around the iron bars.
"This is all your fault! You're the reason my father is dead! You're the reason I have so much work! You're the reason that I have to be king!" Michael cried at me. I noticed tears pricking his eyes and he collapsed in a fit of sobs.
Against my better judgement, I stood up and approached Michael. My head continued to throb and I felt each dizzying step bring me closer to passing out.
I crouched down in front of Michael. I could now see his features perfectly. He was quite a handsome man. Perfect soft auburn curls created an idea of his fiery spirit. His amber eyes flashed with a glint that I'd never seen in anyone before. Freckles stood out brightly on his pale skin as well, bringing a texture to his structured face.
No wonder every girl fell for him.
I sighed and reached a hand out to him, brushing back one of his stray curls. He tensed at my touch and I had a feeling he was gonna lash his sword out at me.
He didn't.
Instead, he leaned into my touch and I stroked his cheek gently, wiping away the tears that continued to trail down his skin. His sobs quieted and I smiled as I realized I had made the Prince- no King, feel better.
"You okay?" I asked gently. He looked up at me with big amber eyes.
"I guess. Look, I have been forced to decide your fate. I believe you didn't mean to do the terrible things you did, so I'll make your death quick," Michael told me.
Wait... What?
"What? No! You can't kill me!" I cried out.
"Excuse me? You killed the King, my father, you deserve death," Michael growled at me, the familiar glint of fury dancing in his eyes.
I looked at him in confusion. I didn't kill the King. I was about to when he pulled a sword on me, but I got knocked out before I could release my arrow.
~ Earlier ~
I ran quickly from the village, my bag full of breads and raw meats. My ankle was throbbing but I ignored the pain. Right now, I had to focus on getting away before anyone noticed what I did.
I suddenly saw a sword lash out at me. I stumbled a bit but quickly regained my balance. Thank god for the parkour lessons my father gave me.
I turned to the person and pulled my bow off my back. I knocked an arrow into the bow and pointed at my attacker threateningly.
I nearly dropped my weapon when I realized who stood in front of me.
"King Ryan?" I breathed in disbelief.
"Well, well, if it isn't the son of Geoff. How's that old 'bugger' doing?" Ryan asked. I felt myself get angry with the way he mocked me.
"He's fine. But that is none of your concern," I growled at him disrespectfully.
King Ryan gazed at me thoughtfully. His eyes creased as he looked me up and down and back again.
"You wouldn't dare shoot at the King, would you?" King Ryan asked me.
"Who's to say I wouldn't?" I asked him. "You're knights haven't been able to catch me yet. If I killed you, they wouldn't ever be able to prove it was me."
That got him. King Ryan glared at me with a look of fury and... Fascination?
"You would've been a powerful ally, Gavin. A very powerful ally," King Ryan purred before I felt a sharp blow to my head. My arrow released but it didn't go anywhere near King Ryan. At least... I think.
I collapsed to the ground and before I blacked out I saw another person come to stand beside King Ryan.
"I didn't kill him. I swear to you, I didn't. I was about to, but I got knocked out before I could," I told Michael. He only rolled his eyes and stood up.
"I've been taught to never believe a criminal. You're death will be set in two days. Public execution," Michael growled at me before leaving the room.
And like that, I was alone.
