Chapter 7

After a long few days in Scotland, we returned home. The past few days have been rough. Evie hasn't been sleeping well and has been having more nightmares. She'd wake up crying and afraid that one of her uncles was going to hurt her. She hadn't left mine and Josh's bed the past few days, which was starting to get to both of us.

"Evie you have to sleep in your bed tonight," I say as I'm getting her ready for bed.

"I don't want to, I'm scared," she says

"Evelyn, Mom and Dad need time alone, you have to stay in your room,"

"No," she screams before starting to cry.

I get up and walk out shutting her bedroom door behind me, going back into mine and Josh's room.

"She's not going to listen Josh. She's screaming and crying afraid to be alone,"

"We need time for us though babe we both know it,"

"I know, I just feel like a bad mom ,"

"Let's go in and sit with her until she falls asleep," he suggests

"It's not going to work Josh. As soon as we leave she'll wake up,"

"I guess just let her cry herself to sleep then. I didn't know,"

"Do you think we're being selfish?"

"Callie, we have to focus on ourselves too. Evie needs to learn the world doesn't revolve around her," He gently kisses my lips, "Let's take a bath together and relax a bit. Once we're done we can go check on Evie,"

After about two hours alone with Josh, we walked down the hall to Evie's room. I opened the door and we walked inside.

"Evie?" I say

I look around the room but don't see her. It wasn't until I saw that the window was opened that my heart dropped.

"Josh she's gone," I say

"Shit. Let's look outside around the house. Maybe she stayed nearby." We ran outside and searched, but she was nowhere to be found.

I breakdown sobbing almost instantly blaming myself. "I'll call my brothers and Joe. They can help us look babe," Josh says

"Should we call the police?"

"We'll look for a bit, if we can't find her we'll notify them,"

"What if Grant took her?"

"Babe the window was barely open, if he had taken her the window would be open all the way,"

"Hurry up and call them. I want her back in my arms,"

It wasn't long before Jon, Sefa, Joe, Jacob , Tama and Loa showed up at our house and we started to look for her. Trin tried her best to keep me calm but I was a nervous wreck. My mind kept worrying about the worst case scenario.

One by one the groups came back empty handed. As time went on panic started to set in. A little after 2 am, Jacob and Jon came back with Evie in Jacobs arms. She was crying and scared but thankfully safe.

"Oh thank God," I say as Jacob places Evie in my arms. I cry as I hold her in my arms.

"Mommy?" Evie says

"Yes baby?"

"Why are you crying?"

"Because I thought something happened to you. You can't run away Evie,"

"I know, Uncle Jon told me,"

"Well what Uncle Jon didn't tell you is that you're grounded. No iPad for two weeks,"

"But mommy,"

"No buts Evelyn. You had all of us scared. What if something bad would have happened?"

"Why did you run away Evie?" Josh asks

"You and Mommy didn't want me anymore,"

"Baby that's not true. We wanted you to sleep in your own bed. Just because you arent next to us doesn't mean we don't love you,"

"You see everyone in this room? We all love you, that's why they came out to look for you,"

"I know. Uncle Jacob told me he loves me even though I was scared of him,"

"It took a little convincing, but I got her to come around," Jacob says

"How did you convince her?" I ask

"He gave me candy," Evie says

"Don't worry, I didn't give her much. Just enough to bribe her to come down off the slide,"

"Good, I don't need a hyper kid. It's way past her bed time. How did you know to look at the park?"

"You gotta think like a kid Callie," Jon says

"Why am I not surprised it was your idea,"

"Kids are gonna be in places they like babe," Josh says

"I'm just glad she's safe. Thank you guys,"

"You're welcome,"

"Evie go give your auntie Trin and uncles hugs. It's way past your bedtime" She runs and gives each of them a hug.  When she hugs Jacob, I see him hand her more candy and smile before walking behind her and taking it away "you can have this tomorrow, you're going to bed,"

"But mommy I'm hungry," she says

"I'll get you a snack you can eat, but you don't need more sugar,"

After everyone leaves, we walk into the kitchen and Evie sits at the table. I give her a little bit of fruit and some goldfish before sitting down next to her. Josh sits down next to me and wraps his arms around me

"You okay if she sleeps in our bed?" He asks

"I was going to ask you the same thing,"

"Evie you wanna sleep with us?" He asks

"Really?" She asks excitedly

"Yeah, you scared the crap out of Mom and I tonight, i think we both need you between us,"

After Evie finished eating, Josh carries her to our room while I clean up and throw the trash away.

I walk into our room a few minutes later to see Evie and Josh sound asleep. I turn off the light and lay next to them still on edge about the situation.

Josh reaches over and wraps his arm around me, almost like he knew that I was struggling. "It's okay babe, she's safe," he says

I woke up several times throughout the night to check on her,  she laid in Josh's chest still sleeping soundly, but around 8, I heard her starting to stir. Josh had already gotten up about an hour ago, leaving just Evie and me in the bed.

I sat up as I heard her little feet hit the floor and run toward the bathroom. Josh comes into the room with breakfast for both Evie and I.

"What's this for?" I ask, surprised by the gesture

"Just because I wanted to. Where's Evie?"

"Bathroom. We both just woke up,"

"I figured. I know you had a rough night,"

"I just wanted to make sure she was okay,"

"That's why I let her sleep on my chest. I knew if she'd get up,"

"I vote we install sensors on the kids bedroom windows and the the doors leading to outside. Especially for night time,"

"Already ahead of you babe. I know I was trying not to show it but I was terrified last night,"

"It just shows you're a good daddy,"

"I didn't feel like one last night,"

"I know. We need to talk to her and set boundaries,"

Evie climbs up in the bed and sits next to us. "Good morning princess, I brought you breakfast,"

"I thought we can't eat outside the kitchen?" She says

"On special occasions we can. Daddy wanted to do something special for us,"

She hugs him before taking a bite of her waffle . "Evie we need to talk to you about last night," he says

"Evie I know you've been struggling and having nightmares but mommy and Daddy need some time together too," I say

"Why?" She asks

Josh looks away trying not to laugh, "because we want to spend time together by ourselves. You know how you asked us for a sister? That can't happen if we're always with you,"

"Oh okay," she says

"So can mommy and Daddy have bedtimes at home to ourselves? When we're travelling you can sleep right between us,"

She nods, "Only if I get my sister,"

"We're working on that but it takes time,"

"You know we gotta pack for the road today," Josh says

"I know, but I want to go back to sleep for a bit. I'm so tired,"

"I'll take Evie while you rest," he says

"Thank you. Just remember she isn't allowed to have the iPad,"

"You know that's going to be hard I trips right?"

I nod, "she has to learn though. She'll have all her uncle's to keep her busy,"

After we finished eating, I laid down in the bed and closed my eyes, just hoping I could catch a little more sleep
