The Nurses

"COME ON!" You felt Mono pull you by your coat dragging you towards the window, you both desperately pulled it open only being interrupted by a loud BANG coming in the room.

The splashing of footsteps echoed in the alley. You had both made your way down the window, climbing down staircases to get to safe ground. The thing that once was following you had stopped to take a couple of blind shots that all richoted off the ground. You both ducked into the road not stopping to catch your breath until you had reached a point you couldn't recognize, you grabbed Mono's arm ducking him under a tipped over trash cart.

Breathing heavily you both stumble into the floor of the cart taking a breath, "you ok?" You ask "yeah you?" You nod, taking a moment you take a small step out of the trash can trying to recognize the area, you flip your notebook to the map, pulling out a lighter from your bag you flick it on, "you mind?" You offer it to Mono, he hovers it near you so you could read, "you know where we are?" He asks " We ran for a while we shouldn't be too far, I did recognize a pharmacy, so we should be near the hospital's backroad" you traced your finger on the map following the street you assumed you both ran in.

You flipped the notebook to your last writing, the sentence and numbers were fairly legible despite the obvious haste it was written in, you could feel Mono lean closer. You suddenly felt a slight knock on your head, you snap your head up seeing Mono give a glare, "What were you thinking?!" He had knocked your head "but I needed to write the-" he knocked your head again "you could've gotten shot!" "But I didn't!" He knocked "you better stop or I'm gonna-" knock, you quickly reached over to knock him in the noggin with him moving out of the way resulting with you tumbling over, you look up at him before bursting in a laughing fit, Mono soon joining after.

It really helped release the tension of what was to come.

You both made your way towards the back of the hospital, "Do we have to go here can't we look in the pharmacy?" "It's empty "you respond, reaching the grate of the vent prying it open with the screwdriver, "how would you know?" Mono asked, "cause I emptied it" you replied changing the tip of the screw driver to unscrew the unseen screws "beside sassy, will be here in and out it shouldn't take long, just enough time for the next train to arrive" Mono helps you open the vent after you put the tool away, "don't call me sassy" he whispered, you motion for him to enter but he hesitates. "promise me you won't leave my side" he meets your gaze, your face contorted into confusion "Where's that coming from?", "Just promise", his been here before, hasn't he?, you shake the concern "I promise, now get in", you follow after him.

The vent had led to what seemed to be a cabinet file maze, papers had been thrown around all over the place. Most of them were patient records, some were simple documentation.
The place looked like a fight a had broken out, the decaying corpse of a nurse in the corner decorated with syringes proved the theory to be true. "Everyone was so desperate for answers, they must have thought it would be here" you respond while standing in front of the body "How come you remember so much about The Fall?" Mono asks standing next to you. You nodded your head for him to follow "My mom used to be a journalist before so she was always involved" Mono followed you down the hall you had taken, staying attentive of his surroundings while listening "She had met dad at the news station, he was the repairman there so he basically made sure the tower was working" You continued as you headed into a room that seemed like another office. "Mom always read her drafts out loud and TVs were a common thing at home so I basically grew up always knowing what was happening around the world" you stopped for a second Mono halting behind you "Guess it was basically their downfall as well" Mono looked puzzled "what do you mean?" you turned your face to look at him for a second before gazing back at the tall cabinet "Dad was at work and Mom was watching TV when it happened" you gulped for a second "I later learned that when the signal had changed, the first affected were does who were near the signal tower Dad was in the 20th floor with some other workers" you took a step towards the cabinet grabbing the edge of the door to pry it open.
"They were the first to fall off the tower" you opened the cabinet revealing the shelves, you steadied your foot on one before beginning to climb. You looked down seeing Mono still shocked, you advert your gaze back at the cabinet pulling out a couple of antibiotics that were in the back, "Mom was watching the news of the report when it happened, but it was too late, the signal hit home and she became one of those things" you climbed the rest of the way up the cabinet checking to see if anything had been hidden. Finding a small box of bandages you opened it.

Mono shook himself back to reality, he thought about how you could just nonchalantly say all of this, where you even human? before he knew it he started climbing up the cabinet spotting you at the top, stuffing some bandages into your bag.
"I'm sorry for your loss, it must have been hard" he watched as you stopped mid way and looked at him "thanks".
He went to sit on top of what seemed to be a glass jar accidentally knocking a taller jar off the cabinet. You both jumped to your feet at the large chatter of the glass, freezing to your spot.
A silence surrounded you being interrupted by wild footsteps coming over before the door you had walked in from was slammed open, revealing a nurse, or at least it seemed like a nurse.

Her neck craned over looking at its surroundings. Spotting the broken jar it bent over picking it up, it scanned around like a camera looking for anything out of place. Funny when the whole room had already been flipped upside down, then what seemed to be its face bent upwards at the top of the cabinet.

You pulled Mono from the back of his coat, quietly pulling him to the back of the cabinet behind the box of empty bandages and tall jar of toungue supresors.
You watch as a hand reaches the top of the cabinet swatting around trying to find the cause of the jars fall. Your breaths stopped.
Then the hand retracted, you both loosened up in your spot, stopping yourselves of letting out a sigh of relief, you heard it take two steps back.
You looked to your side looking at Mono's face but were only met with a terrified look, you followed his gaze only to be stopping when you spotted the porcelain face looking behind the jar.

The nurses neck seemed to have been made out of perhaps breathing tubes and wires that slithered and stop at its command, its face was that of a porcelain mask, which would have been considered beautiful if it weren't for the blood splatter and gaping holes where it's eyes should have been, the "eyes" didn't move but neither did any of you, time seemed to stop in its place. Then it finally slowly retracted back.

You heard the thing exit the room shutting the door behind it and walk away, but this time neither of you wanted to move. You broke the trance by letting out a large breath having to steady yourself by putting your hands on your knees. You heard Mono follow afterwards as he sat on the ground clutching his chest.

You both walked your way through the hospital trying to find the next exit only to be met by a gate, "really?" You looked around for a switch or button, anything that signaled how the door could be open, "there" Mono pointed to a cable that followed the door leading to another room. You both followed the cable stopping when it lead to a locked door.

The door itself had what seemed like a mail slot and next to the door itself was a frosted window. "Ok boost me and I'll see how I can open the door from the other side" you told Mono walking over to the door, expecting him to be behind you you turned your gaze to the side only to be met by no one, you looked behind you seeing Mono frozen to the same spot. "You helping me or not?" He still doesn't move, sighing you walked back over to him, "What's wrong?" You ask "but you promised-" you stop him mid sentence "Mono I'm literally gonna be behind that door I'm just gonna pull a chair and open it, it's not that hard" Mono crossed his arms he walked over to the door, you followed behind. "You boost me" he stated "what?", "You boost me I'll open the door" he stated again "why?" "Just do it" you sighed leaning your back against the door you cup your hands together making a step, Mono carefully placed his foot and you boost him upwards enough for him to reach the mail slot, you watch him struggle through a bit worming his way in you hear a thud on the other side presumably him falling, "you ok?" You ask the door."Yeah there's a electrical panel here let me pull the chair over to open th-" he voice cuts off mid sentence you look at the door confused "everything ok there?" Silence "hello?" There's a silence but a looming sound can be heard "Mono?"

In the corner of your eye you can see a purple hue coming from the frosted window. You press your face against the glass as best as you can making out the outline of a small figure next to a box that's producing the light, suddenly you can feel the glass vibrate when you are cut off by a loud yell coming from the room. The glass shatters sending you tumbling backwards. You scramble off the floor looking around for the source of the yell, your eyes catch the once intact window to be gone all the pieces scattered on the ground, your ears catch a sound.

It sounds like sobbing, "Mono?" You call out.

You stumble upwards running towards the sobs you spot Mono on the ground cradling his legs, "Mono!" You run over to him kneeling next to him. You went to hold his shoulders but stopped, "I don't wanna be alone I don't wanna be alone I don't wanna be alone" he kept repeating to himself "Mono listen to my voice" you pleaded, you hesitantly placed your hand on his back rubbing it in circles, "im here Mono listen to my voice, you're not alone", Mono's sobs became whimpers as he slowly lifted his head, his gaze meeting yours, "You are here?" The confusion seemed to leave his face being replaced by a look of realization. He scanned the room, "you ok?" You asked finally resting you're hand on his shoulder, he nodded you looked around the room spotting a broken TV the glass shattered on the ground.
Mono tried standing up tumbling a bit, you got up help him stabilize himself, "careful".

You both were brought back to the present when the sound of several footsteps echoed outside the door, instinct kicked in and the both of you ran to find a hiding spot. You both took shelter under the tv stand low enough in the ground that you both had to crawl under. Your breaths hitched as the door shot open barely hanging from the hinges, you felt Mono grip your hand. You could see at least three pears of heels enter through the door, the crunching of glass and violent thud shifted your gaze to the shattered window, two nurses having violently shoved each other to get through it. You were surrounded.

The clacking of heels surrounded the room, the nurses all scattered in the room looking for the pests, they sensed that someone was there, but where?
You both desperately weighted your options looking for alternatives. The nurses seemed to follow a pattern, even obsessively checking the same spot over and over again. Figuring out the pattern, the nurse you focused on took 1 step forward vendes over then would take 3 steps back, pivoting around then taking a step back. Even if the switch to the exit was out of the equation, your chances of escape would be increased. You turned your head to Mono catching his attention, you pointed to the nurse in front of the door. You put one finger up, waited, did a circle motion, then three fingers up when it stepped back. He nodded taking the signal. You scanned again the rest of the nurses they were distracted by the glass and the other crevices leaving the surrounding TV empty.  You slowly scanned the surrounding spotting a small vase full of dead flowers, a small stack of books on the desk, and a box of something. All small enough and easy to distract with, you focused your gaze on the objects.

The sound of racket caught the nurses attention towards the far end corner of the room. The sound redirected the four nurses near it towards the corner, all of them Puc she's against each other, leaning towards the broken objects. You yanked Mono's hand crawling from under the TV stand towards the wide open door.

You leaned up against a trash bin, it was enough to cover your figures from the nurses in the corner, you focused your gaze back on the nurse patrolling the doorway. This time it was Mono who yanked your hand when the nurse had turned away pivoting, but as careful as you both tried to be you both foolishly failed to assume their could be more nurses outside of the room.

Dashing down the hall your pitter patter were drowned by the chaotic clacking of heels and sound of something slithering in the ground. You both blindly ran down the hall, occasionally resetting your running pattern to no avail.
You finally rounded into a room full of beds, you both desperately slid and crawled under the beds, praying it would slow them down but were merely answered by the sound of beds being thrown around.

You both slid under a door that had been boarded up, quickly jumping to your feet, you both turn to look at the boarded entrance, catching your breaths momentarily, you watch as all the nurses grouped around the boarded entrance, their hands spilling through the cracks, desperately swinging their arms grabbing at whatever was in their way. "That was close" Mono breathed, "don't get to comfortable we can't-" you were rudely Interrupted by the cracking of wood, as a lump of nurses fell in the doorway, "RUN!" You both yelled in unison returning to run in a general direction.

Rounding corner after corner, hallway after hall of mazes on without end, you both reached reached a large doorway slamming your bodies against them, you both were unfortunately met by a terrible fate, you felt your foot slip, the feeling of gravity following order.

Mono desperately jumped holding unto a edge, his fingers slipped, he looked behind him seeing you drop into an abyss, he felt his grip weakened and follow your direction of downfall.

You both only registered the gross slap of falling into a body of water.
