Chapter 4

After looking up and down the corridor I decided to go and find Chloe. The atmosphere had changed and it seemed even darker than it was before.

I walked back in the direction of her room when I smelt the same acrid smell that I noticed earlier. The corridor seemed to stretch on for miles. Which way was the room and how far had I come? A dim light shone from underneath the door to room 14. I realised I was getting closer.

Upon reaching her door I sensed a movement behind me. I quickly turned and saw there was nothing there.

I knocked on her door several times to no avail and then called out her name.

Finally she answered, "What's up?"

"Did you come and knock on my door just now? I could have sworn I heard someone."

"Nope I've been in my room this whole time. Its quiet creepy in here isn't it? I wish we could have shared." I agreed with her, said goodnight and set off back to my room.

The journey back seemed a lot quicker and easier than before, as I reached my room I heard the faint sound of a piano being played.
I looked at the time and saw it was half eleven. Who would play music at this time of night in such a quant village?

The sound was soothing like a lullaby and I soon drifted off to sleep.

The breakfast was pretty gross.
I had asked for a full English breakfast and there was something which looked like liver on my plate instead of bacon. I poked at it with my fork and saw Chloe had a disgusted look on her face.

We were the only people sat having our breakfast, I noticed left over plates were still on several tables so maybe they'd had theirs a lot earlier than us.

As we left the dining area a broad shouldered man was approaching us.
His eyes were black.

I stepped aside so he could get by but as soon as he got to me he had vanished. I turned around but couldn't work out where he'd gone.
Shrugging we made our way out of the B&B.

The village was pretty in the daylight, people were milling about.
Children shouted with delight as their parents pushed them in the playground.
Dogs were being walked and a couple not that much younger than us were canoodling on a bench in a bus shelter.

We popped into the newsagents to ask for directions for a petrol station.
According to the lady behind the counter it was only a mile down the road, before heading off in search of it Chloe got a petrol can out of the boot of her car.

The petrol station was situated beside the main road only a few minutes away from the road we originally took the night before.
We wandered in and spoke to a man with a thick Dorset accent.

"You two girls should be more careful when traveling at night. You could have broken down in worse places but that village can be deceiving."

"Yeah it is kind of spooky at night, especially with that statue staring at us whenever we walk by. But the B&B is pretty creepy too."

The man stopped filling up the can and stared at us. "You're staying at the B&B?"

"Yeah, we only stayed one night. We are going to our friend's new house this afternoon."

He continued what he was doing, "I see. Well you two girls ought to be careful alright? I've heard some old tales about that place."

"Oh really. Like what?"

"I don't mean to scare you, anyway you needn't worry if you've already stayed the night there and you're leaving today." He handed us the can and we paid him. "Take care now."

We said goodbye and made our way back to the village.
I wondered what those stories were about.
