in which yoko and tessa talk
Tessa's feet found solid ground after magically teleporting from the underground Unknowables' hideout to the apartment where one of her "clients" lived. She supposed that yes, the people who she was recruiting were clients of sorts. The Unkowables were certainly helping them out.
She made her way into the kitchen of the apartment where she found someone leaning over the table with a bottle of alcohol.
Tessa pitied them, she really did. This client of hers was in love — madly in love — with John Lennon and they'd built up so much hope recently but Tessa knew that, unfortunately, it was all going to fall apart very soon.
"Oh, hi," Yoko looked up and set down the bottle that was in her hand. "I didn't hear you come in. Sorry, I must look a state."
"What's wrong?" Tessa frowned.
Yoko sighed. "I saw Paul yesterday."
"Paul McCartney?" Tessa asked anxiously and, to her horror, Yoko nodded.
"Yeah," Yoko sighed again. "You didn't tell me that he knew about all of this — the F.H.O., and the Shadows, and the Unknowables and all that. We talked for a little while."
"Sorry, I wasn't allowed to tell you," Tessa sighed. "Not at first, anyway. You weren't supposed to find out yet. Did he tell you anything else?"
"Uh, yeah," Yoko nodded. "I don't know if you know about this bit but.. He and John are dating. He says they're in love. I — I thought when I came back here I'd be able to be with John again, you know? Marry him again, get a second chance at a life with him. I thought I'd get to have years and year to spend with him because we're going to make sure that he doesn't die. But when I met him again last night — I saw him, too — he was..he was cold toward me. He wouldn't talk to me. When we met, originally, there was a spark there. A beautiful spark that lit a burning, passionate fire. But it wasn't there."
Tessa sighed heavily. Damn it, Paul! She thought. Why the hell would you go and do that?! You were specially told not to do that just a couple days ago! "Yeah, I know.." She said. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, I really am."
Yoko frowned. "You knew.. Didn't you."
Tessa sighed again, then nodded slowly. "Yes, I did. We all did, and I'm sorry! But we wanted to take this one step at a time, we didn't want to shock you. I'm...I'm sorry that you had to find out this way."
Yoko crossed her arms. "How can they be together?"
"It's meant to be," Tessa smiled.
"No, it's not," Yoko shook her head. "It can't be."
"Why not?"
"Because John and I are meant to be."
Tessa frowned. "I'm sorry. I can't say it enough, so I'll just keep saying it. Because I am, I am so sorry. But the fact of the matter is, John and Paul are in love and you can't change that."
"There has to be something I can do!" Yoko exclaimed. She was desperate.
"Like what?" Tessa crossed her arms and raised her eyebrows. "Tell me what you honestly plan to do. Break them up? Win John over? Make him fall in love with you? Seems like a bitch move, don't you think?"
Yoko didn't say anything.
"They're in love. They really are." Tessa said. "You should talk to Paul and you'll see that they're a match made in heaven."
Yoko shook her head. "I will never think that John is meant to be with anyone else."
"Well, I'm sorry about that." Tessa said. "I'm going to go, but just think about this; you said yourself once that if Paul had been a woman then John would have fallen in love with him. You were almost right, expect Paul didn't have to be a woman fro John to fall head over heels for him."
Yoko sighed. "That's what Paul said."
Tessa smiled and nodded. "Exactly." And with that she was gone.
From Yoko's place she went straight to the Beatles' flat. There, she found Paul in the kitchen drinking a cup of tea. He looked a little on edge, but nothing too serious. He looked up and saw that Tessa was standing there. "Hey, Tessa! It's been such a long time! Like a year! How've you been?"
Tessa did not tell Paul how she'd been or ask how he'd been or say that it was nice to see him, too. "Hello, Paul." Was all she said in a stern voice, arms crossed over her chest.
"Erm, hi? Am I in trouble or something?" Paul furrowed his brows.
"You told Yoko everything! What the hell!" Tessa bellowed.
"Well no one ever told me that I wasn't supposed to!" Paul exclaimed. "No one even told me that it was Yoko who was the Plan B! She showed up at a party we were at last night and she started talking to me and then we both figured out that we were both from the future and I didn't know what to do so I told her everything!"
"Stop trying to bullshit me, McCartney! Barney was here a couple days ago to tell that it's Yoko who's the Plan B and to tell you not to tell her anything!" Tessa narrowed her eyes at Paul.
"No, he wasn't! I swear!" Paul threw his arms out to the side.
Tessa tilted her head, giving Paul and unbelievably unconvinced look.
"He wasn't here!!" Paul yelled. "I promise!!"
Tessa looked at him with a hard glare. "Okay.. I'm going to look into it. I'm going back to the Unknowables' hideout and call Barney, ask him to come in. I'll talk to him about that. I'll be back soon. We're going to have to figure out how to go about this with Yoko because she's pretty upset about the whole thing."
Paul frowned.
"You look upset," Tessa said.
"Yeah," Paul nodded. "I'm worried."
"About Yoko?" Tessa asked.
"Yeah," Paul said.
"Don't be," Tessa shook her head.
Paul looked up at her. "Why shouldn't I be worried about about? You do realize that Yoko was actually married to John at one point, right? Why should I believe that she won't find a way to win him over and steal him away?"
"Because I don't think she's going to do that once she sees how happy the two of you are together," Tessa said with a reassuring smile. "I talked to her today and we had a conversation about you and John and I made her think about some things... I really don't think she's going to try and break you guys up once she sees how close the two of you are."
Paul sighed and nodded. "Okay. If you really think so..then I'll try not to stress about it too much."
Tessa smiled and nodded. "Good. Well, I'd better be off. I need to have a word with Barney."
"Okay," Paul said. "See you soon?"
Tessa nodded. "Yes," she said. "Bye.."
"Goodbye," Paul waved, then Tessa disappeared into thin air.
When her feet found solid ground again, she looked up to find herself in the Unknowables' underground hideout. "I'm home!" She called.
Stephanie entered the room. "Hey, Tess, we were just about to have dinner. Come on."
"Cool, what're we having?" Tessa asked, shrugging her jacket off, throwing it aside, and following her older sister out of the room. "It's Chloe's night to make dinner, right?"
"Yeah, she made Chicken Parmesan," Stephanie nodded.
"Yes!" Tessa exclaimed. "Her Chicken Parmesan is the best!!" They walked into the dining room where Chloe was putting a plate of Chicken Parmesan and homemade French fries down in front of everyone at the long dining table. Tessa noticed, as she slid into her seat between Stephanie and Ed, that Barney's seat was empty. "I thought Barney was going to come for dinner tonight?"
"Yeah, so did we." Jeanette frowned.
"He said that he was going to bring Lilly and Kylie with him, too," said Darren. "But he hasn't showed up. We tried calling him and we tried calling Lilly but neither of them are answering their phones."
"I hope nothing happened to them," Penelope said.
"Yeah," Tessa nodded. "Anyway, I've got a bone to pick with Barney."
"Why?" James asked.
"Well, I went to see Yoko today and she was very upset," Tessa said, cutting into her sauce and cheese smothered chicken. "She said that Paul hold her everything so naturally I went to confront him. I asked him why he'd do that when Barney specifically told him just a couple days ago — well, a couple days for Paul, but he was supposed to go today after work at the F.H.O. — not to tell her anything! And you know what Paul said to me? He said that Barney never went and told him not to tell Yoko anything!"
"That's weird," Jeanette furrowed her brows. "I really hope nothing bad happened to him."
"Yeah," Marian nodded. "What do you think, Lola? I mean, the way he talks it sounds like the two of you used to be really close friends."
"Yeah, but you know that I don't remember that after everything that happened when I left the F.H.O.," Lola shook her head. "I remember things like the White Room and all about the fake prophecies, and I remember a few faces that I can't put names to but Barney got wiped along with lots of other things."
"Sorry, Lola," Gabriel said. "He still seems pretty upset about that."
"Yeah," Lola frowned. "He does."
"Anyway," Georgia said. "I really hope nothing terrible has happened to him."
"Like I said, same here," Tessa nodded. "Because next time I see him I don't want to have to take pit on him because I'm going to kick his ass."
Penelope and Jack laughed.
"I'm serious!" Tessa exclaimed, biting into a particularly crispy French fry.
"Yeah, I might just take a whack at him myself," Stephanie piped up. "We need to keep Yoko on our side, and this was some very big and upsetting news for her. We wanted to let her down easy, and Barney was supposed to tell Paul that but he didn't."
Phoebe nodded. "You're right, this is important. Barney had better learn to sleep with one eye open."
"Ain't that the truth," Nicholas laughed. "If the three of you are after him, he ought to be running for the hills."
"Very true," Tessa nodded. "I'm going to get drinks, I'll be back soon." She pushed her chair back, got to her feet, and hurried off to the kitchen. Upon entering the kitchen, she let out a high pitched yelp.
There, kneeling on the floor and trying desperately to get to his feet, was Barney — beaten, bloody, and bruised. Beside him, trying to help him up, was Lilly who was in tears.
"Barney, Lilly — oh my god!" Tessa exclaimed, dropping to her knees in front of Barney. She placed her hands on either side of his face, trying to steady him as Lilly fell back on her heels, sobbing. "Are you okay? What happened to you? Was it the F.H.O.?"
Barney shook his head. "The Shadows," he croaked, trying to pull himself to his feet. His arms shook under the weight of his body and then gave way. His face smacked into the ground and he groaned.
"Barney!" Lilly exclaimed, reaching out and gripping his shoulder tightly.
"Oh, God, I'm going to get the others." Tessa said, bolting from the room. She raced into the dining room frantically, looking panicked. Everyone looked up at her worriedly. "We've got a situation!" She exclaimed.
