07| SUE SPLITS THE GLEE CLUB

[ Chapter Seven ]

❝Why the hell do we have to just stand there while Rachel and Finn get the solos?❞

[Throwdown]

Mr. Schuester sat all the glee kids down to ask them what they wanted to do for Sectionals. It was strange, having Mr. Schuester actually willing to listen to their ideas as he usually came up with the songs and ideas.

"As we head into Sectionals, I'd like to know what kids of stuff you guys would like to be doing?" Mr. Schuester asked them and they all looked at each other, "Like any music in particular that you guys want to do?"

"Could we maybe try something a little more..." Mercedes paused, "black."

Kurt smiled, "I agree. We do do a lot of showtunes."

"It's Glee club. Not Krunk club." Rachel complained.

"Don't make me take you to the carpet." Mercedes threatened.

"Fantastic. Thank you Mercedes and Kurt." Mr. Schuester responded, "Duly noted. Anything else?"

"I can pop and lock." Mike raised his hand and Raven grinned at him.

"Not really what we're going for Mike, but noted." Mr. Schuester responded.

Raven leaned over and whispered to Mike, "I really hope he lets you. I feel like that will intimidate the others a little bit."

Mike grinned back at Raven.

Coach Sylvester gathered the four Cheerios into her office to talk to them about Glee club. Raven had no idea why she was still there as she had clearly sworn her allegiance to the Glee club and not to Coach Sylvester. But she was there nonetheless.

"I want to pit these kids against one another, am I clear?" Coach Sylvester told the four girls.

They all nodded, including Raven.

"Quinn, update. Go."

"The minority students don't feel like they're being heard." Quinn responded and Raven stole a quick glance at Santana who almost looked like she was blushing.

"Hmm. A chink in the armor. Huh?" Coach Sylvester leaned back in her chair, "I am going to create an environment so toxic that no one will want to be a part of that club. Like the time I sold my house to a nice young couple and I salted the earth in the backyard so that nothing living could grow there for a hundred years."

The girls looked at each other in disgust.

"You know why I did that? Because they tried to get me to pay their closing costs." Coach Sylvester smirked.

The next day in glee club, Coach Sylvester and Mr. Schuester were both there. They were going to split up the club so they could do two separate numbers. Most of the kids weren't happy about it but what could they do?

"Ladies choice. Heads." Coach Sylvester said and flipped the coin. When it landed, it was indeed heads.

"All right. The following students have been selected for a special, elite club called 'Sue's kids.'" Coach Sylvester spoke.

"Hold on. We agreed no to split up the kids." Mr. Schuester looked upset.

"Oh come on Will. Give me a chance to do things the Sue Sylvester way. Maybe with my proving leadership abilities I can help this pathetic group of mouth breathers place at Sectionals." Coach Sylvester told him.

"We can't even compete in Sectionals if we split up the group." Mr. Schuester insisted, "It's against the rules."

"Really? You need to crack open a book, William. Here, I have. Show choir rule book, page 24, provision 15, second addendum. Twelve members must perform for each team However, not all members must perform each song."

"Fine. Just go ahead and take all the football players and cheerios." Mr. Schuester complained.

"All right everybody. Listen up. When you hear your name called cross over to my side of this black shiny thing." Coach Sylvester instructed.

"That's called a piano, Sue." Mr. Schuster sighed.

"Santana. Wheels. Gay kid. Come on, move it." Coach Sylvester called out, "Asian, other Asian, Aretha and Shaft."

Raven looked confused and then realized that she was taking all the minority students. Raven sat back in her seat next to Quinn who reached out and squeezed her hand.

"See Will. I don't want to participate in a group that ignores the needs of minority students." Coach Sylvester nodded at them.

"You have got to be kidding me." Mr. Schuester complained and he had a right to. A lot of strong singers were in that group and now they were gone.

"Oh, I wouldn't kid about this Will. And maybe that's your problem. Bigotry is not a laughing matter." Coach Sylvester sighed.

"And that's how Sue. Sees it." Santana joked, holding up a hand in the shape of a 'c'.

"Bitch." Raven whispered under her breath.

At Cheerios practice, the next day, Raven was practicing a forwards handspring in the grass, as Quinn chatted with Santana and Brittany, who were the only other Cheerios on the field when Coach Sylvester screamed for Quinn.

"Q. Here now." Coach Sylvester instructed.

"Where are my Cheerios?" Coach Sylvester asked.

"Coach Sylvester. They're not academically eligible. Mr. Schuester flunked them." Quinn explained.

Raven smirked. Mr. Schuester had every right to flunk them. Some of the other girls on the team needed a serious reality check. Who knew how long they'd been going on without knowing how to take a test and every teacher was just passing them for fear of the parents. Well, it had to stop and looks like it was going to.

>> >> >>

The whole Glee club decided to get together to have a jam session without Mr. Schuester or Coach Sylvester knowing and it was fun. Puck took out a guitar and started playing 'Ride Wit Me'. Finn was at the drum set having the time of his life. All the Glee clubbers sang it whether they knew all the words or not. It was a little bit of a mess but so much fun. Raven was grinning so much as everyone seemed to get along for once in their lives. Raven put her arms around Puck as she swayed behind his chair and he grinned at her as she belted out the lyrics.

They all cheered as it ended.

"I miss us all being together." Rachel spoke.

"I hope we don't get in trouble for our covert jam session." Artie laughed and they all laughed as well.

"If Sue us mingling we're cooked." Kurt pointed out, "She told me that if I even talked to one of Mr. Shue's kids that she would shave my head." Everyone laughed at that.

"And I just can't rock that look. I mean even Justin Timberlake is growing his 'fro back." Kurt finished.

"Well, we got to go you guys. Ms. Sylvester is expecting us in ten minutes in the dance studio" Mercedes announced.

Everyone groaned, simultaneously.

Raven hugged Tina and Mercedes goodbye and the others all said goodbye to each other.

"Bye." Was chorused around the room and Artie waved, "Bye white people."

Mr. Schuester came in and grinned, "Hey. What are you guys doing here?"

"Just stopping by to say hello." Tina smiled.

"It's great to see you guys." Mr. Schuester smiled and pulled music out of his bag, "Alright. Great news guys. I brought the band with me, and I think that we have our number for sectionals."

Raven took a seat in between Quinn and Puck.

"Mr. Schue. We don't like what this has become." Rachel spoke up.

"Don't you guys see? That is how Sue wants you to feel." Mr. Schuester told them.

"Yeah, and it's working." Raven complained.

"Giving up doesn't help anyone but her. Look if it were up to me we would all perform together at Sectionals, but it's not up to me anymore, okay? Sue's going to do her own song, and we are going to do ours." Mr. Schuester responded, "Sue's kids are singing about hate. Literally. So, I thought we would take a kinder approach."

He passed out the music to everyone and then moved microphones.

"All right. Finn and Rachel. You're going to take the leads." He instructed.

"Wow. I love this song." Rachel grinned, "Okay, Finn follow my lead."

"Are you kidding?" Raven scoffed.

"So much for togetherness." Quinn got up and scoffed.

Mr. Schuester ignored the two of them, "All right. You guys really need to practice this. Night and day, between classes. It needs to be letter perfect."

The four other kids got up and took background vocals which sucked. Raven was upset that the others never got to sing lead vocals.

Soon, they had to perform it on stage and it sounded good but it was basically just Rachel and Finn's voices.

"Amazing guys." Mr. Schuester applauded them.

"Excuse me? What about us?" Quinn stepped forward, "You expect us to just sway back here like props?" She then looked at Puck, Brittany and Raven, "I think Sue was right about him. He clearly doesn't like minorities."

Quinn walked off the stage and Puck, Brittany and Raven stared at each other.

Raven broke the silence, "Quinn's right. I mean, not about not liking minorities. But about us. Why the hell do we have to just stand there while Rachel and Finn get the solos?"

"Cause they're good." Brittany mumbled.

"Yeah." Raven smiled, "But so are we."

>> >> >>

When Brittany, Puck and Raven were called to Coach Sylvester's office this time, Raven didn't complain.

"Can you imagine, in this day and age being discriminated against? My goodness. The pain you must be feeling." Coach Sylvester sighed and looked at Puck, "So, your last name's Puckerman?"

"Shalom." Puck grinned.

"Who knew?" Coach Sylvester said, "And Raven, you were bullied at your old school. This must be terrible for you."

"Well, Coach. I was bullied for being bisexual. So, I'm a little confused as to why I'm not in the minority group?" Raven questioned.

Coach Sylvester narrowed her eyes at her, "Cause I forgot." She looked at Brittany, "And poor, sweet Brittany. Oh I know the Dutch are famous for being a cold people, but that's no excuse for treating you like some half-priced hooker in Amsterdam's famous red light district."

Brittany looked very confused but went along with it.

"Well, all I can say is if you're serious about leaving Schuester, Sue Sylvester's rainbow tent will gladly protect you from his storm of racism." Coach Sylvester instructed.

>> >> >>

"So, are you going to leave Mr. Schue?" Puck asked Raven once they were out of Coach Sue's office.

Raven sighed and looked at him, "I really don't know. I have to deal with Coach Sylvester for Cheerio practice and now I'll have to deal with her for Glee club too. It's a little much."

"Look, you are talented, Raven. And Mr. Schuester is taking that away from you." Puck told her.

"We're not even friends. What do you really want from me?" Raven crossed her arms.

Puck raised an eyebrow and leaned against the wall opposite her, "First of all, we are friends. Second of all, nothing."

It was Raven's turn to raise an eyebrow as she was sure that he was lying, "There's no ulterior motive?"

"Other than our voices would match for a duet and I think us spending time together will make Quinn jealous, nope." Puck said all in one breath.

Raven smirked, "I knew there was an ulterior motive." She sighed, "And yes, I'll join Coach Sylvester's group. If you and Britt join as well. I'm not betraying Mr. Schue alone."

Puck smirked and offered his arm to her, like a gentleman which he wasn't.

Raven rolled her eyes and took it, "Also Quinn is so not going to be jealous."

>> >> >>

Quinn led Cheerios practice as some of the Cheerios had improved their grades and came back. She led them through a rather complicated routine but didn't do any of the difficult moves herself.

After practice, Quinn pulled Raven aside, "Ray. What were you doing in Coach Sylvester's office yesterday, with Puck and Brittany."

"Apparently Coach Sylvester didn't know who Puck was and that's why he was there and she just wanted to talk to Brittany and I about glee club." At Quinn's startled face, Raven added, "Don't worry. I didn't give away any secrets."

Quinn sighed, "I worry about you Raven."

"Why?" Raven asked, "I'm the one who should be worried about you."

"We worry about each other then." Quinn told her and then asked, "Also, what were you doing with Puck?"

"I don't know what you mean." Raven grabbed her bag and started walking for the locker rooms.

"Ray." Quinn caught up with her, "Santana saw you two walking together."

"Yeah, apparently we're friends now." Raven smiled, "Who knew?"

"Raven. Tell me." Quinn insisted.

"We're friends, Q. I haven't become his makeout buddy if that's what you're wondering." Raven turned to her best friend.

Quinn sighed, "Sorry, Ray. I should trust you." She linked her arm in Raven's and they walked to the locker room together.

Raven was half tempted to tell Quinn about switching groups, but she knew Quinn would be upset. So she didn't.

>> >> >>

Mr. Schuester's kids, of which there were only three now, were performing for Coach Sylvester's.

"I'd just like to say that while we find ourselves on opposite sides, I hope you'll enjoy our number and we look forward to seeing yours." Raven smiled from the stage.

Quinn was furious when she found out that Raven wasn't in their group anymore but it was partly her fault so she forgave Raven. Quinn wanted to switch sides but Raven urged her not to as then it would just be Finn and Raven.

"Get on with it." Coach Sylvester screamed.

"I'm starting to regret this." Raven whispered to Puck, who was sitting next to her.

Puck rolled his eyes and nodded, "Same."

"Enough with the jibba jabba. Sing something." Coach Sylvester yelled.

"Sue. You can't talk to kids that way." Mr. Schuster yelled back.

Rachel begins but Coach Sylvester stands up, "That's it. She had her chance. Everybody up. Come on we're leaving."

Raven's eyes narrow and she looks at Quinn who looks angry. The others get up but when Raven starts to get up, Puck pulls her back down and whispers, "Don't listen to her."

"I'm sorry. Is there a fire?" Finn asks.

"No and that's the point. There is no fire." Coach Sylvester responds, "You know. It's sad enough that my 'Sue's kids' are living in squalor and probably on food stamps."

"My dad's a dentist." Mercedes answers.

"And my dad's a lawyer." Raven raises an eyebrow.

"But for you to drag them in here and bore them to death. I won't stand for it." Coach Sylvester continued, "Come on kids. Out. We're going for conies. My treat."

"All right. That's it." Mr. Schuester yelled, "You know what Sue. You've been pretty honest about your feelings about me, so let me return the favor. You're rude, Sue. You have no class and you are a terrible teacher."

"I'll have you know, I have my PhD." Coach Sylvester retorts.

"You got it online, Sue." Mr. Schuester yells back.

"You are a failed performer, Will. You weren't good enough to make it in the real world. You're not even good enough to run this stupid little club that nobody cares about. Time after time, Will. You fail."

Everyone's faces were shocked. Puck and Raven were still sitting down but most of the other kids weren't.

"You spend every waking moment of your life figuring out ways to terrify children to try and make you feel better about yourself, and the fact that you're probably going to spend the rest of your life alone." Mr. Schuester yelled.

"How dare you talk to me like that?" Coach Sylvester pushes him.

They start yelling back and forth and all the kids look at each other in shock or concern, until Finn breaks the silence, "Enough!"

Everyone looks at Finn who continues, "I'm sorry Mr. Schue, Ms. Sylvester, but if we wanted to hear Mom and Dad fight, those of us who still have two parents would just stay at home on payday."

Mercedes interjected, "I agree. Glee club is supposed to be fun. And furthermore, I don't like any of this minority business. I may be a strong, proud, black woman, but I'm a lot more than that. I'm out." Mercedes turns around and leaves.

"M-m me too." Tina agrees and follows her.

"Fellow Glee clubbers, it would be an honor to show you how a real storm out is done." Rachel says from the stage, "I encourage you to follow my lead."

Everyone starts following her, including the musicians. Puck pulls Raven up by her hand and then helps Matt, and Mike carry Artie's wheelchair up the stairs. At the top, Quinn takes Finn's hand and leads him away but not before giving Raven a smile. Raven sighs and walks the other way but Puck grabs her hand.

"Puck. What are you doing?" Raven asks.

"Did Quinn say anything?" Puck asks.

"Yes, she doesn't like me spending time with you. I told her we were friends. And just friends." Raven pulls her hand away, "I'd appreciate it if we keep it that way."

"Whatever." Puck turns around and leaves.

>> >> >>

"You are all minorities." Mr. Schuester is talking to the Glee club the next day, "You are in the Glee club. Now there are only twelve of you, and all you have is each other. So it doesn't matter that Rachel is Jewish, or that Finn is..."

"Unable to tell my rights from my lefts." Finn offers.

Everyone laughs.

"Sure. Or that Santana is Latina, or that Quinn is..." Mr. Schuster continues, but Coach Sylvester cuts him off.

"Is pregnant." Coach Sylvester speaks, "Sorry Q. It will be all over the blogosphere by this afternoon. Now everybody knows. Including me."

Coach Sylvester leaves and the rest of the Glee club is in shock.

"I'm sorry Q." Raven looks over at her best friend and leans her head on her shoulder.

Quinn takes her hand, tears in her eyes, "It's not your fault Ray."

>> >> >>

The whole Glee club sings Keep Holding On together, in honor of Quinn who is sobbing throughout the majority of it. At the end instead of standing straight, Raven runs over to Quinn and throws her arms around her as Quinn sobs.
