Washing Clothes
Mary and Jesus, who was about 3 years old walked out of their home to go to the Nile river in Egypt. She carried a long, oval shaped basket with clothes that included 2 white cloths that she used as diappers for Jesus.
That day, Joseph was very busy working on a friend's house and so he couldn't help Mary with Jesus. Usually, Mary washed the clothes on her own. Knowing that there were dangerous animals nearby, Mary didn't like to take her son to the river.
"Come on, Jesus!" Mary told him. Jesus looked up at her and smiled. He obeyed immediately and walked with her through the small village out to the river.
Jesus looked like every other child. He had, beautiful round, curls of the color of walnuts or dark chocolate.
He was always a happy child and something that was very strange is that he always obeyed his mother. Every person who had ever met him was stunned to see how well behaved Jesus was.
"I wish my child would act like that," some would say and others frowned at the child, envious. Those who were envious of the child, either spread rumors about him being abnormal or told the child that he had to go away.
When Mary and Jesus reached the Nile River, Mary instructed the child to stay where she could see him. Jesus obeyed and Mary, who had a bit of back pains due to the work of carrying the basket, she settled it down on the ground and stretched her arms up.
Jesus walked to her and touched her back, gently. When Jesus stopped, Mary had been completely healed. She didn't feel her back aches anymore.
"Why, thank you, Jesus," said Mary. Jesus smiled. He had pink, chubby cheeks and huge, dark eyes.
"Welcome mami," Jesus replied. Then, he walked to the river and splashed his fingers in the water.
"Remember not to go too far," Mary reminded him. He nodded and laughed. He was too happy splashing the water with his fingers and then his entire hand.
Mary laughed. Then, she decided, it was time to wash the clothes, so she took out the clothes and dropped the first one into the river. Then she rubbed it with a soap made of lye and animal fat. As she washed, rubbed, scrubbed and then took the clothes out and squeezed the water out, she sang songs of the great King David, of the prophet Daniel and Queen Esther.
She liked Egypt, but she felt nostalgia for Nazareth, her home. Jesus clapped sometimes and even tried to sing with her. After the songs, Mary took a brief break. She hung the clothes around the basket, hoping they would dry. When she turned around she almost had a heart attack. Jesus was talking to a crocodile.
"Jesus!" she screamed, afraid something would happen to the boy. When she reached Jesus, she grabbed him and carried him immediately away. The crocodile disappeared.
"Jesus, are you okay?" Mary asked him.
"Of course, mami," Jesus said nodding. She looked at his face and noticed he wasn't afraid.
"Mami, don't be afraid. I will win," Jesus said. Mary stared at Jesus for a moment breathless.
"What?" She asked him, confused.
"I am Samson!" He said playfully and roaring like a lion. Mary smiled and her fear was gone.
"Ha, yes. You certainly are," she said. They both played together a little bit more until Mary finished her break. She placed all of the wet clothes back into the basket and returned home with Jesus. Joseph had recently arrived and he was happy to see his wife and Jesus return. He helped her with the clothes and then he sat on a chair that he had made. He asked them about their trip and Jesus was running in the house, saying, "I am Samsom, I am Samsom!"
