Prolouge
"Where are you two? Come on ouut!"My mother sang, and Merida pressed her mouth to my hand, shushing me with a grin as I giggled, our hands tightly intertwined as we had hid under the table. It was such a beautiful day, perfect for our fifth birthday, was it not? We both had asked to go outside, wanting to camp out at one of the cliffs that overlooked the plains, with us not knowing that this cliff would be forbidden from then on. Our mother had paraded about the large table, acting as an old witch, hunting out little red headed girls.
Merida pulled me to the next table leg as Mum poked her head in to see if we were behind the last table leg, but of course, we weren't. But, she caught a glimpse of my dress and I knew she had smirked, chuckling. She had rounded the table, and as we were about to make a run for it, she had scooped us up, blowing raspberries at both of us as we tried to escape put of her arms, two wiggly five year olds twins.
But then our father came in, and he lazily tossed his sword and bow on the table, and Merida and I felt our eyes grow wide. We were sat down as our parents talked, well, as my mother scolded him for putting weapons on the table, and we tried to get the weapon we liked.
Merida pulled down the bow, begging to shoot, and as our father turned our attention to both of us, and I was hopping up and down, trying to reach the shiny sword, but failing and whining for my older sister to help me.
"Hey, now, you two! Why use mine, when you can have your very own?!"He said heartily, holding up a wooden sword and a tiny bow and arrow. Our mouths fell open. Merida looked up from under dad's bow, which had fallen on her, and I stopped hopping.
"Steady... Steady... Swing!"He instructed me, but I had done so with such force that the sword flew into the forest beyond. I let out a groan, and was about to let out crocodile tears in order to get my sword back faster.
"Here, let me shoot first, and then we'll go get your sword!"Merida beamed. I wiped away the fake tears, smiling at her. With our father's instructions, she shot, but we watched it fly through the air in the same direction as my little sword.
"Ain't that a coincidence. Go on, you two. Go get them."Our father told us, beaming. We nodded at the same time, and Merida dragged me off through the forest in the direction of our weapons. But suddenly, we gasped.
"A Wisp...!"I whispered, and we two twins approached it slowly, gasping once more as it disappeared. But then, another appeared. We followed them through, trying to catch each one, completely captivated. Our hands were still interwoven, so we were trying to catch it with my left and her right, our writing hands. But we couldn't, but kept determined, until the wisps stopped, and, looking up, we saw her arrow and my sword, my sword against the tree and her arrow in the tree, right next to it, barely touching each other.
We grabbed them, and ran. We couldn't wait to tell this story. As we arrived, we were out of breath, so much so that I just kept letting out ironic wisps of breath, trying to get words out.
"I saw a wisp!"Merida yelled, grinning as usual, and I nodded in agreement.
"Ye did, did ya? I heard they could lead ye to yer fate." Mum told us, smiling.
"Or to a sword and an arrow."Dad chortled. Our mother scolded him.
"Ye better watch what you say or mom'll give you a real hanmeri... Erin?"Merida asked. I was looking up. I remember that my eyes were wide, big and blue, and I was shaking, my mouth popped open, looking up. Merida looked up, and she screamed. My mother and father turned around, seeing the bear, screaming its name.
Mordu.
I ran towards my beckoning, open-armed sister. I jumped towards her arms, but something barely caught me along the back, scraping down it, making me scream in pain, and I landed in her arms. Mother picked us up and put us on her horse. Merida watched what was going on, holding me to her, but I couldn't even lift my head. My back felt like it was leaking. And everything started to go black.
