Chapter 7
When Mon-El returned to the apartment he shared with Kara that night, he found her sitting on the couch, holding something that looked very familiar to him.
"Is that?" Mon-El asked.
"My spy beacon, yeah. I kept it on me when I left Krypton because I wanted to have something to remember my aunt by. But now I know that it can also still serve its primary function." Kara said.
"It can summon her." Mon-El said and Kara nodded.
"There's nothing I want to do more than turn it on, since I know that she still has hers too." Kara said.
"Then why don't you?" Mon-El asked.
"Because we've hit a dead end with Draper. He's vanished, since we can't find him anywhere in the city and he's not reporting into work, apparently he hasn't since I became Supergirl. And he hunts Fort Rozz escapees. I don't want to risk him jumping ahead of the line to capture my aunt, especially after I just got her back." Kara said.
"Maybe that should be even more reason to turn it on." Mon-El said.
"What are you talking about?" Kara asked.
"Like you said, we've hit a dead end in our hunt for the Master Jailer. Maybe the best way to locate him is with bait." Mon-El said.
"You want to use my aunt to lure him out of hiding." Kara said.
"I know it's not an easy decision Kara, but it's the best one we have. We have to catch this guy before he kills anyone else and right now, this is the fastest solution." Mon-El said.
"I can't lose her again, Mon-El. I can't." Kara said.
"And you won't. Because this time, we're prepared for him. We know all his moves, he can't get the jump on us this time. We'll have the entire area prepared to take him down. Not to mention, we'll have you. The paragon of hope. One of the most powerful beings in the entire universe. If anyone can protect her, it's you." Mon-El said and Kara smiled.
"Still, what makes you think she'd agree to this? After all, if my memory is correct, she is not quite as accepting of Daxamites as my mother is now. She won't exactly be eager to see you, let alone be happy that we're dating." Kara said.
"My answer to that is simple. We have a martian who's powers work on Kryptonians, we'll simply have him restore Astra's memories." Mon-El said and Kara sighed.
"I know you're right, but that doesn't make it easier for me to accept." Kara said.
"She will be fine." Mon-El said and Kara nodded before sighing.
"Guess it's time for that family reunion a bit sooner than I'd hoped for." Kara said as she turned her beacon on.
Astra was very surprised when suddenly, out of nowhere, her spy beacon turned on.
"Impossible." Astra said.
"What is it?" Non asked her as he approached her.
"My spy beacon, it's turned on." Astra said.
"That's not possible. Even if your niece did happen to bring it with her when she left Krypton, how could she possibly know to turn it on. After all, I highly doubt that Alura would have the audacity to be honest with her daughter about what became of you." Non said.
"It was most likely by accident. She probably turned it on due to feeling nostalgia for home." Astra said.
"Whatever the case, perhaps you should not be so quick to respond. It could be a trap." Non said.
"I do not care. This may be my only chance to recruit my niece to our side. To our cause." Astra said and Non nodded.
"Then go. She's already gained the support of the population of this planet. If you can get her on our side, it will make it easier for them to accept our methods." Non said as Astra flew off without saying another word.
"Sir, do you really believe that General Astra will be able to convince her niece to join us?" one of Non's subordinates asked him.
"No, not one bit. If anything, I think we should begin planning to relocate, since the only thing that kept Astra strong all these years is that she believed that her niece was dead. But now that she knows that the brat is alive, her resolve has weakened and I fear that she will desert us." Non said.
"You don't seem too upset about that though." the same soldier said.
"The General was always weak minded. She never had the courage to use Myriad to its true potential. Trying to save this planet is a waste of its capabilities. Once I'm sure that she's out of the way, then we'll use the technology for what it was always meant to be used for. We'll enslave this planet and then every other planet in the universe, until everyone bows before us." Non said.
"With yourself as the leader?" the soldier asked.
"Unless anyone else has an objection to that." Non said.
"I have no objection to your ambitions sir." the soldier said.
"But." Non said.
"You should remember that Kryptonians only possess powers while being in the presence of a yellow star and there are only so many of those in the galaxy. Perhaps it would be smarter tactically to settle for this planet." the soldier said.
"Perhaps. That is a bridge we cross when we come to it. Now, inform the troops that Astra has deserted our ranks and that there has been a change in plans. I'm moving up our timetable." Non said and the soldier nodded as he walked towards the command center.
When Astra arrived at the coordinates her spy beacon was giving her, she found it was an apartment in what the humans called National City.
Before going inside, she used her own x-ray vision to survey the apartment to ensure that it was not a trap and she smiled when she saw that not only was it not a trap, but there was her niece, sitting on her couch.
But her smile quickly faded when she saw who else was in the apartment.
"Daxamite." Astra growled more than said as she flew through the already opened terrace door and landed quickly.
"Aunt Astra." Kara said, genuine emotion in her voice at the sight of seeing her aunt alive again.
"Get away from my niece you filthy daxamite." Astra said as she moved at super speed to grab Mon-El by the neck and lift him up.
"Aunt Astra, let him go." Kara demanded.
"He is our enemy." Astra said.
"No, he's the love of my life and if you kill him, I will never forgive you. I just got you back, please, I don't want to lose you again because you can't let go of a feud that is pointless now anyways." Kara said as Mon-El gasped and struggled for air.
"You trust him with both your heart and your life?" Astra asked, seeing the pleading look on her niece's face.
"With everything I hold dearly." Kara said as Astra finally nodded and released him.
"Apologies." Astra said, though it was clear that the effort to do so pained her deeply.
"It's fine." Mon-El said as he massaged his throat.
"Yeah, he's not the one who shouldn't trust." Kara said as J'onn phased through the wall into the room.
"Who or what are you?" Astra asked, right as her niece restrained her,
"Someone who wants to prevent your death." J'onn said as Astra struggled against Kara's strength, since her niece was surprisingly strong, even for a kryptonian as J'onn pressed his hand to her temple and his eyes glowed red as he restored Astra's memories of the old world. Memories of her fighting Kara and then, her death. Then events that had happened after she died, the most significant of which being the survival of Argo City. The survival of her sister.
"Are you good now?" Kara asked as J'onn moved away from her.
"Yes, I am. I remember everything. Including the things that I was not here for." Astra said, looking at Kara, wanting verbal confirmation that it was true.
"We haven't found it yet, but based on everything we can tell, yes, Argo's survival still exists in this reality." Kara said.
"I now know what a fool I was to listen to Non." Astra said.
"I always wondered why you married him, since you never truly seemed happy with him." Kara said.
"You know why. Unlike here on Earth or even on Daxam, choices were not encouraged on Krypton. While finding a mate that you actually loved was encouraged, my pairing with Non was simply due to the fact that it was expected of us. I know that he did love me, but honestly, I never loved him. However, I could not bring the shame that a divorce as it is known on this planet would bring on my family, so I sucked it up and did my best to adapt." Astra said.
"You're here now. A place where choices are encouraged. Aunt Astra, you can choose to change things right now. You can choose to be my ally, my family instead of my enemy." Kara said.
"You truly believe that I can be redeemed?" Astra asked.
"I believe that your intentions and your heart were both good, Non just diverted them to suit his own ends. And besides, you did change in the old reality, you came to your senses right before you died. But now I think we can avoid that. You know that Myriad is not the way to save this planet don't you?" Kara asked and Astra nodded.
"Especially since J'onn made sure to show me what happened when it actually came to fruition. That was not what I wanted. I wanted to save this planet, to save our planet, but I did not realize at the time that it would cost me the people I was doing it for. You, your mother, your father, all of you, while you may be alive, you wouldn't recognize each other or me. I'd never get to hold my little one in my arms again." Astra said and Kara nodded.
"So, does that mean that you're done with Myriad?" Kara asked and Astra nodded.
"Non will have no doubt suspected that I'd turn on him when I came to see you. It's too dangerous to go after him right now, since he will likely be readying Fort Rozz's defenses." Astra said and Kara nodded.
"Well, I hate to interrupt, but we actually turned on the spy beacon for another reason." Mon-El said, snapping Kara back to reality.
"What is it?" Astra asked.
"One of the surviving Fort Rozz guards has become a criminal, hunting down every escaped criminal he can find and executing them, no matter how severe their crime was. We need to find him before he hurts anyone else." Kara said.
"And you need to draw him out." Astra said.
"You don't have to if you don't want to." Kara said.
"No, I'll do it. It's just one of the many ways I can repay my debt to you and everyone else." Astra said.
"Are you sure?" Kara asked.
"Yes, I am. Now, let's discuss your plan." Astra said and Kara nodded.
"Best to do that at the base." Kara said and Astra nodded as they headed out.
