Chapter 18
"Yeah, really starting to wish I'd listened to Zor-El and stayed with him." Alex said to herself as she hid behind some rocks from some phantoms. She wasn't sure how long she'd spent searching the phantom zone since time did not pass here, but she was beginning to wish that she'd listened to Zor-El and just stayed in that cave with him until Kara and the rest of the Superfriends came to save them. She was also regretting her decision to come in here alone in the first place. Not her smartest decision and it was one that she was sure J'onn, Kara and Kelly would all be making her pay for later. But she'd worry about that later. As in, once she got out of here alive. If she ever did, since her chances of that were becoming lower with every passing minute. Or they would if minutes existed here.
Anyways, she was pulled from her thoughts when suddenly, she heard someone grab her from behind and put their hand over her mouth before she could scream, which immediately ruled out the possibility of a phantom, so her next assumption was that it was one of the prisoners.
"Shh, quiet." Zor-El said as he pulled her into a small cave.
"Zor-El? What are you doing here? I thought you were staying in your cave?" Alex asked.
"I was. But then I realized that you were right. I couldn't let fear stop me from having hope, especially now that I know that there is something to hope for. My wife and my daughter. The three of us will be together again and I know that Kara would never forgive me if I let something happen to you." Zor-El said.
"I'm sure she would've gotten over it. After all, we're not blood like you two are." Alex said.
"Alex, you of all people should know that family is not limited to just blood." Zor-El said.
"True. But anyways, what do we do? This place is too exposed, unlike your old cave." Alex said.
"We try to find the anchor out of here, unless Kara finds us first." Zor-El said.
"We need a way to get around this place faster." Alex said.
"There might be a way, though it is incredibly risky." Zor-El said.
"What is it?" Alex asked.
"The way the phantoms travel through the zone is by opening portals throughout it. If we can find one, we should be able to hitch a ride on them." Zor-El said.
"That sounds dangerous, but then again, everything about this place is dangerous." Alex said and Zor-El nodded.
"It's better than just wandering around here. We'll be able to cover more ground." Zor-El said.
"I'm in. And I'm sorry for being so hard on you." Alex said.
"It's okay. You were right. I'd gone so long without having hope, I'd forgotten what it was like. But now I remember, thanks to you. And I know that you only said what you said to get me to remember who I really am." Zor-El said.
"I guess it worked." Alex said with a smile.
"Yes it did. Now, let's focus on staying alive and trying to find the anchor." Zor-El said and Alex nodded.
"Okay, we have just entered the phantom zone." Mon-El announced as the legion ship passed through the portal from Earth.
"And you're sure that our shields will hold? The last thing we need is to fall victim to the Phantom's fear visions." Alura said.
"Don't worry, I upgraded your shields so that nothing can get through them, even the turbulence of the phantom zone. It would take more power than it's possible to access in this place to penetrate them." Mxy assured them.
"He's right. Our power level hasn't dropped at all since we entered." Mon-El confirmed from his pilot's chair, since she was the only one of them who not only knew how to fly the legion ship, but could also focus on flying it while they traveled.
"How's the tracker working?" Kara asked Winn and Lena.
"We still need to decide to track first, since there's only enough processing power for one at a time." Lena said.
"Maybe a little look at the circumstances they're in will help narrow it down." Mxy said.
"Do it." Kara gave her permission, at which point, Mxy did not waste any time in using his magic to show them the current circumstances.
"Wait, it looks like they're together now." Kelly said.
"So that means we only have to track one of them, since that will lead us to both." Kara said.
"Your magic seems to be working fine here." Mon-El said.
"That's only because I'm protected by the ship. It's the same reason you, Supergirl and Alura Zor-El still have your powers here. Trust me, if I got off the ship, you'd see a difference." Mxy said as he then saw something else.
"Everything okay?" J'onn asked, not trusting the imp at all.
"Don't you see that other person in the image?" Mxy asked as Kara saw who he was talking about.
"Yeah, it's a woman. It looks like she's stalking Alex and dad." Kara said.
"Maybe she's just another wrongfully sentenced prisoner hoping to find a way out." Winn suggested, trying not to look at Alura as he said it.
"It's okay Mr. Schott. I'm well aware that a lot of the people I sent here likely didn't deserve it." Alura assured him.
"That's not someone you sent here." Mxy said.
"Wait, you know her?" Kara asked.
"Only by reputation. She's an imp like me, a princess, before she was sent here. Don't know why and never bothered to find out due to self preservation." Mxy said.
"Meaning that something bad would've happened to you if you had talked about her?" Kelly asked.
"Look, it's a bad idea to start rumors about royals without having all the right information. I didn't want to risk doing something that would tick off people even more powerful than me." Mxy said.
"Fair enough." Kara agreed.
"So, what should we do about her for now?" Alura asked.
"We ignore her and focus on what we came here for and hope that she doesn't try to hitch a ride." Mxy said.
"Okay then. Program the tracker for Alex since we have plenty of her DNA on hand." Kara said and Lena and Winn nodded as they did exactly that as Kara went over to Kelly.
"How are you holding up?" Kara asked her sister's girlfriend.
"Probably about as well as you are. Honestly, when we save Alex, I'm not sure if I'm gonna kiss her or kill her for doing something this stupid." Kelly said.
"Yeah, get in line. I mean, Alex is basically a soldier, she knows better. Don't go in alone when you don't have to. And here I thought I was the reckless one." Kara said and Kelly chuckled.
"Yeah, trust me, we've both shared a bedroom with Alex, we both know she's the stubborn and reckless one." Kelly said.
"True. But she's also protective. Honestly, she put a lot of her life on hold for me when we were kids. Too much of it. And before she met you, she still was. And here I thought she was finally done worrying about me and was worrying about herself. Then she does this." Kara said.
"She's your sister, it's her job to worry about you." Kelly reminded her.
"I know, just like how I worry about her, but honestly, sometimes she goes too far. You know Mon-El is still terrified of her right." Kara said.
"That's the reason you two aren't engaged yet right, he hasn't worked up the guts to ask her for her blessing." Kelly said.
"Yeah pretty much. Though now, I think that she's lost that right for now. Also, my answer is yes." Kara said.
"What, when Mon-El proposes, I already knew that." Kelly said and Kara chuckled.
"No, not that. I mean, when you no doubt come to me to ask for my permission to propose to Alex, my answer is yes. You're a much better fit for her than Maggie ever was, especially since this time, Alex didn't just jump into an engagement like she did with Maggie." Kara said and Kelly smiled.
"Thank you Kara." Kelly said.
"Just don't break her heart, because if you do, don't think being James's sister means I won't send you here for a month." Kara said and Kelly chuckled.
"Deal. As long as you agree to do the same to Alex should she break my heart." Kelly said.
"All the more assurance she never will." Kara agreed.
"You okay?" J'onn asked Alura as he found her staring at Kara and Kelly talking.
"Yes, it's just, I missed so much of Kara's life after we sent her to Earth and honestly, even though she found out I was still alive, I never really spent time with her. I was too caught up in my duties in Argo City. I feel like I've failed my daughter twice." Alura said.
"Alura, Kara is the woman she is today because of your influence." J'onn said.
"Really, because all Zor-El and I did was let her down. We lied to her and made her think we were heroes when in reality, we were nothing like the role models she thought we were. And it's our messes she's had to clean up." Alura said.
"She doesn't hold that against you. At least not anymore." J'onn said.
"Maybe, but still J'onn, you, Alex, Eliza Danvers, you're all the ones who've made her the woman she is today. But I failed too." Alura said.
"It's not too late. You and Zor-El could move to Earth. I'm sure Kara would love it if you could spend more time with her, not to mention Clark's kids, since they are the closest thing you've got to grandchildren until Kara has her own kids." J'onn said and Alura smiled at the thought.
"That is something I will discuss with Zor-El once I have him back." Alura said.
"Are you nervous about that?" J'onn asked.
"A little. I mean, I'm not the same woman I was before and he's sure to have changed in some ways after being here for so long. I can only hope that our love for each other is the one thing that hasn't changed." Alura said, right as the tracker went off.
"We're getting close. But now we need to decide who's going out there." Lena said.
"I am." Kara said before anyone else.
"Kara, are you sure?" J'onn asked.
"If Lena fires that sun bomb, it'll allow me to keep my powers long enough to grab dad and Alex and get back to the ship before the Phantoms swarm us. I'm the only one they both trust." Kara said.
"She's right." Alura said.
"Are you sure you want to do this? This place is your purgatory." J'onn said.
"I know, but this is something I have to do. Get that sun bomb ready." Kara said and Lena nodded as she loaded it.
Zor-El and Alex were preparing to grab a phantom when suddenly, a large burst of bright energy was dispersed in the sky above out of nowhere.
"What was that?" Zor-El asked as they watched all the phantoms disperse.
"I think it was yellow energy. Which means the cavalry's here." Alex said as sure enough, Kara touched down in front of them.
"Kara." Zor-El said, stunned at seeing his daughter all grown up and standing in front of him.
"Dad." Kara said as she hugged him.
"Not to break up this reunion, but can we get to the ship?" Alex asked.
"In one second." Kara said as she hugged her sister before tightly grabbing her and her father and flying them up to the ship.
"Alex." Kelly shouted when Kara returned to the bridge of the ship with Alex and Zor-El.
"Kelly." Alex said as they kissed.
"Alura." Zor-El said to his wife as he walked towards her, stunned and Alura just smiled as she walked towards him as well.
"Hello Zor-El." Alura said as she reached her husband, who cupped her cheeks to make sure she was real.
"I've missed you so much." Zor-El said.
"I missed you more." Alura said and Kara smiled at the sight of her parents' reunion.
"Hey, can we go home now?" Mxy asked.
"Uh, who is this?" Alex asked, still not moving from where she was wrapped in Kelly's arms.
"That is Mxy. Long story. But yes, let's go home." Kara said and Mon-El nodded as Lena fired up the portal generator to open them a doorway out of the phantom zone, which Mon-El flew them through, much to Alex's relief. It was over and she was home. Now she just had to worry about the consequences of her actions from her sister, her father figure and the love of her life.
