Chapter 16

"What's that?" Zor-El asked, pointing at the device that was poking out of Alex's jacket.

"What's what?" Alex asked until she saw what he was pointing at and sighed in relief when she saw what it was.

"I was so caught up in everything else I forgot I had this with me." Alex said.

"What is it?" Zor-El asked.

"If it works, it's our ticket out of here. It's a communication device that was created to allow for communication between the phantom zone and the rest of the galaxy." Alex said.

"Alex, that's not possible. Believe me." Zor-El said.

"I have a friend who specializes in making the impossible happen. If it works, we can make contact with Kara on Earth, let her know we're okay." Alex said.

"And also likely create a signal that will draw every phantom in range to us." Zor-El said.

"Good thing I managed to keep this on me." Alex said as she pulled out her gun.

"Your weapons are powerless against them in their own realm." Zor-El said.

"It's a start." Alex said.

"Alex, I commend your actions, but they're going to get us both killed. I've only survived this long because I've stayed hidden. But what you're doing, it will get us killed." Zor-El said and Alex sighed, since she knew that while she'd given Zor-El hope for rescue, he still wasn't able to see that in order to do so, they'd have to take some risks. However, when she checked the communicator, she found that it was a waste of time.

"It wouldn't do any good anyways. This thing's dead and without a source of electricity or energy, I can't recharge it." Alex said.

"As I suspected." Zor-El said.

"Wait, do you think that you can reboot it?" Alex asked.

"No." Zor-El said.

"Wait, before I came here, my friend, the one who made this thing, also injected me with a tracking device." Alex said.

"And that will likely have been disabled as well." Zor-El said.

"You really are a downer aren't you." Alex said, getting annoyed by this.

"You would be too if you'd been here as long as I have. Believe me Alex, I wish I could help you, but I'm a scientist, not a soldier and even if I was, I know that there are some fights that can't be won. At least not in our current position." Zor-El said.

"But, I might have an idea on how we could at least make things a bit easier for Kara to find us." Alex said.

"What do you mean?" Zor-El asked.

"If you can get the tracker out of me, do you think that you could connect it to the communicator, maybe see if you can use the communicator to get my tracker back online?" Alex asked.

"If I knew where exactly it was, maybe, but right now, it's too dangerous, you would likely bleed out before I could find the tracker." Zor-El said and Alex knew that he was right.

"Look, you may not like it, but the best chance we've got is to find the anchor your wife built here. We do that, and we not only have a way home, but we'd also have actual resources to protect ourselves with." Alex said.

"It's too risky." Zor-El said.

"Then maybe the man I came here to find already is dead, because you are not the man Kara told me you were. That man was brave and was willing to do anything for his family, even sacrifice his life for them. That man would be willing to do anything to see his wife and daughter again. He wouldn't let fear control him when he had something to hope for. I wonder what Kara and Alura will think when they see the man you've become now." Alex said, knowing she was being cold and hard on the man who'd already suffered enough, but honestly, she was tired of Zor-El's pity party and more importantly, if there was one thing she'd learned about his family, it's that they never backed down from a challenge, especially when it was to prove that someone was wrong about them. A trait she hoped Kara had gotten from both of her parents and not just her mom.

"Where are you going?" Zor-El asked as he noticed Alex leaving the cave.

"I'm getting off my ass and I'm going to find that anchorpoint so that I can tell Kara that her father is not the man she remembers him as." Alex said.

"You're really going to do this alone?" Zor-El asked.

"I know it's dangerous, but I'm not going to let that stop me. Not when I have so much to live for and so do you. The difference between us is that I choose to fight for it all instead of hiding. If the man Kara told me about still exists inside you somewhere, tell him I could use his help." Alex said as she walked out of the cave and to what was most likely her death as Zor-El watched her go, neither of them noticing the smile on the face of a woman who was standing outside the cave, watching them argue.

Back on Earth, Kara was growing more and more frustrated, since in her opinion, this whole operation was taking too long.

"Don't do it Kara." J'onn said as he walked up from behind her.

"Don't do what?" Kara asked.

"I don't need to be able to read your mind to know what you're thinking. We've already lost Alex, we can't lose you too." J'onn said.

"She's my sister." Kara said.

"And do you really think that she'd want to go back there?" J'onn asked.

"I know, but J'onn, how can I just stand by when she's trapped over there." Kara asked.

"At least she took some precautions." J'onn said.

"None of which will likely do her any good since both her tracker and the communicator I gave her are down." Lena said.

"Still, at least you tried to prepare her for it." Kara said, making it clear that she held no ill will towards Lena for what was going on.

However, they were all distracted from their planning when they heard a familiar gust of wind that could only mean one thing and sure enough, when Kara turned, she saw her cousin, fully dressed in his Superman suit, standing there.

"Clark, what are you doing here?" Kara asked.

"Well I was curious to find out why you weren't answering any of mine, Lois's, James' or Lucy's calls, but it's clear to me now that I'm interrupting something aren't I." Clark asked.

"Yeah. I've been a bit preoccupied." Kara said.

"What's going on and how can I help?" Clark asked.

"Alex sent herself into the Phantom Zone." Kara said.

"Why would she do that?" Clark asked.

"Because when we released J'onn's brother from the Phantom Zone, he told us that my father is still alive, since he apparently sent himself into the zone to protect himself from Krypton's destruction. We were working on a rescue plan to get him out of there, but Alex jumped ship and sent herself in to find him alone." Kara said.

"Wait, your dad is alive?" Clark asked, since Zor-El was his father's brother, so if he was rescued, that might be the closest thing he'd ever get to getting his birth father back.

"Yeah." Kara said.

"Okay, now I know why you haven't been answering our calls. I'll tell the others about this and also tell Lois that we shouldn't bring the kids here this weekend, since I doubt you need that distraction." Clark said and Kara nodded in gratitude.

"Ahem." Alura said, getting his attention.

"Sorry, Aunt Alura." Clark said as he went to hug his aunt.

"It's good to see you Kal." Alura said.

"You too. If there's anything I can do to help with this." Clark said.

"Right now, you can just keep the lights on, since we don't know how our trip will take and I'm not splitting my focus." Kara said.

"That reminds me, we'll need to leave a few members of the Superfriends behind to protect National City in our absence, since we can't leave it unprotected." J'onn said.

"I'll stay." Nia said.

"So will we." Imra said, referring to herself and Brainy, who nodded.

"Are you sure?" Kara asked them.

"Alex needs her closest friends and family right now and that is you, J'onn, Winn, Lena and obviously Kelly." Nia said.

"I'm going with you because it's my husband that's trapped in the phantom zone with Alex." Alura said and Kara nodded in agreement.

"I'll be on call if you need anything and then when you finish this, we need to talk." Clark said.

"Oh Clark, before I forget, I made you something." Lena said as she quickly retrieved a watch from her lab and handed it to Clark.

"A watch?" Clark asked.

"It's like Kara's." Lena said.

"So, a new suit." Clark said and Lena nodded.

"It's got all the same features as Kara's suit." Winn said.

"Thanks. Now, I better get going." Clark said.

"We'll let you know when we're ready for you to visit." Kara said and Clark nodded as he flew out of the Tower.

"Speaking of being ready, how much longer till we are?" Kara asked Brainy.

"We're working as fast as we can, Kara." Brainy said.

"Well perhaps I can help speed things up a bit." a new voice said as suddenly, some guy just appeared on their porch.

"And you are?" Kara asked.

"I can't say I'm surprised you don't recognize me, since this isn't the same face I used the last time we met Kara, so allow me to reintroduce myself. It's your old friend Mxyzptlk." Mxy said with a grin.

Sorry, but how could I not end the chapter there?
