Chapter 15

Okay, quick poll, who do you guys want to be Kara's Thawne? Her one big bad to rule them all. Lex Luthor is not an option, since he's Superman's big bad. It's always bothered me that they never really gave her one like they did every other hero. Oliver has Malcolm, Barry has Thawne, Kate has Alice, Sara has Darhk and like I said, Clark has Lex. Who should Kara's Thawne be? Please keep them canon since I don't really read the comic books, so if you do suggest a comic book villain, please include a little background on the character. And remember, the big bad should be someone of personal significance to Kara like every other big bad has been to their hero.

Kara spent the next few days up at the Fortress of Solitude, having Kelex gather everything there was in the fortress's archives about the Phantom Zone, making sure to let him know to leave out no detail, no matter how small it might seem. Both her father and her sister were trapped in that hell, she was not leaving anything to chance.

When she returned, she found the whole team working just as hard.

"Anything?" Kara asked Nia as she exited the astral plane.

"Nothing. No matter how hard I focus on my dreams, I can't see her. I've tried everything, I've even reached out to my mother for help." Nia said.

"I believe it is because your powers are limited to the dimension you're in. You can't dream someone who's not in this universe." Brainy said.

"That is a drawback." Kara said.

"However, we may have the next best thing." Imra said.

"What do you mean?" Kara asked.

"The legion ship is equipped with technology that can track DNA anywhere. Even in the phantom zone. If we input some of Alex's DNA into it, when we get into the phantom zone, we can use it to lock onto her position." Brainy said.

"How'd you create something like that?" Alura asked, since both she and Astra looked impressed.

"It wasn't easy, we actually did it by studying phantoms. Long story." Brainy said.

"And it works?" Kara asked.

"In this world yes. But we've never had any reason to test it in the Phantom Zone until now. However, I am confident that it will work." Brainy said.

"Then I trust you Brainy. Don't make me regret it." Kara said.

"We won't. However, we still need to prepare ourselves for the fight that we will no doubt receive, especially since you may not have your powers in the Phantom Zone Kara." Brainy said.

"I think I may have remedy for both those problems." Lena said.

"What is it?" Kara asked.

"I've been working on creating an upgraded form of the DEO's yellow sun grenade technology." Lena said.

"Lena, we haven't even finished testing it yet." Winn said.

"We don't have a choice, Winn." Lena said.

"What are you talking about?" J'onn asked.

"We created what's essentially a yellow sun bomb. It's packed with enough yellow sun radiation to not disperse any phantoms in the area, but it'll also recharge your powers and also give your father powers." Lena said.

"Well that solves that problem." Kara said.

"Except it's a one off thing and we don't have time to build a second one." Winn said.

"So what you're saying is that we only get one shot out of it." Mon-El said.

"Exactly. So we need to be careful. Are the Legion ship's shields capable of cloaking us from the Phantoms?" Winn asked.

"They should, but just to be safe, I can use the data Kara got from the fortress's database to upgrade them specifically for the Phantom Zone and ensure that we don't have any problems." Brainy said.

"Good. Man, can't wait to tell Sara that she's not the only one with a spaceship anymore." Kara said.

"Anyways, we also need to be able to prepare ourselves for both the phantoms and the other prisoners in there." J'onn said.

"That will be tricky. The whole reason we turned the Phantom Zone into a prison is because we knew that the Phantoms would make excellent prison guards." Alura said.

"What do you know about the phantoms?" Kara asked her mother, since her mother probably knew about the zone more than anyone else.

"Well first off, their technical name is Zulian Maletarians. They were originally indigenous to a planet on the very edge of the Rao system." Alura said.

"And let me guess, like Krypton, Jarhanpur and nearly every other planet in that star system, it was destroyed." Kara said, not inconsiderately, but simply stating a fact, to which Alura nodded.

"Yes. Honestly, Argo has marked the Rao system as a no fly zone since it seems like any planet in that system is doomed." Alura said.

"Anyways, let's get back on track." J'onn said, since not only did they need to focus on the matter at hand, but he didn't want Kara, Mon-El or Alura to think about that.

"Right, so anyways, after the phantoms were forced to flee their own homeworld, they aspired to take over others in order to repopulate." Alura said.

"How?" Nia asked.

"Their powers work similar to Pestilence's except instead of making people sick, when they scratch people, they turn into phantoms." Brainy said and Alura nodded.

"Exactly. They would've taken over the entire galaxy if Krypton did not intervene and banish them to the Phantom Zone, which diluted their powers, removing their ability to reproduce. However, they did manage to retain their ability to induce fear into others, which made them very ideal prison guards." Alura said.

"The prisoners sentenced to Fort Rozz were the lucky ones, since we were protected from the phantoms aboard the fortress. The other prisoners who were just tossed into the zone were driven mad." Astra said.

"Okay, so how do we fight fear itself?" Mon-El asked.

"I've done it before when I fought Psi." Kara said.

"But you shouldn't get too cocky Kara. We need to be sure that we take every possible variable into account." J'onn said.

"Well, I might be able to help, since as a therapist, one of my jobs is to help people through their fears. I can teach you guys my techniques." Kelly said.

"Great." Kara said as they continued to plan.

Meanwhile, in the Phantom Zone, Alex was trying to convince Zor-El to leave his hiding place.

"No. You said it yourself, Kara will be coming for us, so why not just wait here until she does?" Zor-El asked her.

"Because Kara still has nightmares about being stuck in the Phantom Zone and I don't want her to have to come back here. Come on, your wife built an anchorpoint here to tether the zone to the rest of the universe. If we can find it, maybe we can use it to escape ourselves, or at the very least, find more supplies to help us survive until they do find us." Alex said.

"Alex, I admire your courage, I truly do, but you can't fight the phantoms, especially combined with the other prisoners here. You wouldn't be able to make it to the anchor." Zor-El said.

"Come on, there has to be some way to conceal ourselves from the Phantoms. Think, you've been trapped here for decades and you're a genius. You created a shield that protected an entire city from a planet's destruction, you created a virus that only targets non-Kryptonian lives and most importantly of all, you're a member of the house of El and if there's one thing that your daughter and your nephew have both taught me over the years it's that your family makes the impossible possible. So think. If anyone can find a way to solve this problem, it would be you. Kara told me that you were the smartest man she'd ever known. Time to prove her right." Alex said as Zor-El thought.

"The only thing in here that Phantoms don't bother is other Phantoms." Zor-El said.

"Okay, but how does that help us?" Alex asked.

"I'm just trying to come up with ideas. However, my lack of equipment is a bit of a setback." Zor-El said.

"Wait, what if we got our hands on a piece of phantom DNA? Do you think you might be able to use it to find a way to conceal us?" Alex asked.

"I don't know. But there might be a place to start at the very least." Zor-El said as they continued planning and Alex could see Zor-El beginning to hope again, however small it was.
