Chapter 12
"So, how'd your trip go?" Alex asked Kara after she returned to National City.
"Very productive. In addition to getting General Lane locked up, I've also secured deals to open up offices in Smallville, Calvintown and Central City." Kara said.
"Wait, what?" Alex asked.
"Yeah, while I was in Smallville, Clark gave me the idea to start expanding my outlet on a national level, allowing me to expand my readers and my profit margins." Kara said.
"Wow, you actually sound like a real business woman when you talk like that." Alex said.
"Yeah. But anyways, I'm glad I did stop in Central City, since Barry could use some help from our scientists. I'll fill you in after I talk to them." Kara said, right as J'onn entered the Tower.
"You okay?" Alex asked her former boss, seeing the look on his face.
"Actually yes, I hope Kara doesn't mind, but I now own the office building next to hers to run my Private investigator's office from." J'onn said.
"Of course it's okay with me J'onn, you know you don't have to ask permission to do things like that. I would've offered you a job downstairs, but I get the feeling that being an investigative reporter isn't exactly something you'd enjoy doing." Kara said.
"And you are right. I've got nothing against journalism, it's just not for me." J'onn said and Kara nodded.
"Anyways, how'd your interrogation of General Lane go?" Kara asked, since Clark had convinced the president to allow the martian to help with General Lane's interrogation due to his psychic powers.
"Strange. While I was able to wipe Clark's identity from the General's mind, I haven't been able to read his mind since. It's as if he's somehow put up a firewall against me." J'onn said.
"Is that even possible?" Alex asked.
"I don't know, since after all, Cadmus is always full of tricks." J'onn said.
"Any luck locating Jeremiah?" Kara now asked.
"None yet. It's not that General Lane doesn't know anything about Cadmus, it's that he's somehow preventing me from reading his mind. I don't know how he's doing it." J'onn said.
"We'll figure it out." Alex said.
"In the meantime, maybe there are more personal matters you should be focusing on." Kara said.
"Meaning?" J'onn asked.
"Don't play dumb J'onn, you know exactly what I mean. You still have a family alive that needs your help." Kara reminded him.
"I can't face my father until I find Malefic and I have no idea where in the Phantom Zone he is, since the Monitor was the one who released him the first time around." J'onn said, right as a portal opened up in front of them and Mar Novu came walking out of it, Malefic J'onzz being with him.
"And I shall do it again, for this is your reward J'onn J'onzz." Mar Novu said.
"Wait, what?" Kara asked.
"Considering what each of the paragons did to restore the universe, except for Lex Luthor since technically, he was a false paragon, I have every intention of giving them each a reward for their actions and before you ask Kara Zor-El, you will get yours when the time is right." Novu said.
"But the time is right for J'onn to get his?" Kara asked, since that honestly sounded a bit unfair.
"J'onn's need has already been determined. His family. Just like how I released Malefic before, I did so again and I've also restored his memories to avoid the unpleasantries you had before, since now there is no need for them." Novu explained.
"Thank you." J'onn said as he looked at his younger brother.
"Do I at least get a hint on what my reward will be?" Kara asked and Novu just chuckled.
"No, simply because I do not yet know what it will be. Each gift is only given when I have determined the greatest need for it's recipient." Novu said.
"How about Argo's location? I really need that right now." Kara said.
"Perhaps, but you can locate that yourself, as I know you are already working on doing. Do not waste your reward now Kara Zor-El, for you will not get another." Novu said as he vanished before Kara could press him any further.
"Hello J'onn." Malefic said.
"Malefic, I am so sorry that you ended up stuck in the Phantom Zone again because of me." J'onn said, but Malefic shook his head.
"Don't. I have paid for my crimes and once I have my powers fully restored, I am ready to go back to Mars to save father and help foster peace between the warring factions on Mars." Malefic said and J'onn smiled.
"He'll be so happy to see us together again." J'onn said.
"Yes, but before we go, there is something else I need to tell you. And your kryptonian friend." Malefic said.
"What is it?" Kara asked.
"In this reality, while I was in the Phantom Zone, I came across a man who, unlike the others, did not deserve to be in the Phantom Zone, but he said he'd sent himself there to save himself from the destruction of his home planet. The man looked human." Malefic said.
"A kryptonian." Kara said and Malefic nodded.
"And not just a kryptonian. One who bore the same glyph on his chest as you do on your suit. A member of the house of El." Malefic said, getting Kara's full attention.
"Tell me everything you remember about him." Kara demanded, not daring to let the hope surface inside her, but couldn't help it as she heard Malefic give her details.
"No, it can't be." Kara said.
"Kara, are you okay?" Alex asked, since she also recognized the man Malefic had described and she knew how many emotions must be going through her sister right now.
"The man Malefic encountered in the Phantom Zone, that's my father Zor-El. He's alive." Kara said, feeling her legs going weak at the idea that her father was alive, since even after discovering that her mom was still alive, she'd given up all hope of ever seeing her father again when she'd learned that he'd died ensuring that Argo survived.
"We'll find him and bring him home." J'onn promised her.
"Do you know where in the Phantom Zone he is?" Kara asked.
"I'm afraid not. I only met him once and I could not memorize his exact coordinates, if he's even still there." Malefic said.
"Then I'm going in there to find him." Kara said.
"The hell you are." Alex said.
"Alex, I can't abandon him after knowing how long he's been trapped there." Kara said.
"And the Phantom Zone is your greatest fear too. You've already been trapped there once before. I'm not letting you go back there under any circumstances." Alex said.
"I can't just leave him there." Kara insisted.
"And you won't. But right now we need to make a plan, since it won't help anyone, especially your father, if we go in there blindly to search for him with no exit plan or any insight on the Phantom Zone." J'onn said.
"Except I do know of a way out. My mother created an anchor in the phantom zone that tethers it to the rest of the universe. She constructed a portal to allow her guards to travel back and forth between the zone for shift changes." Kara said.
"Even so, we don't know where in the Phantom Zone it is or where your father is. It would take us decades to find him. Time that we don't have, since while I understand you wanting to save him, you also can't abandon National City." J'onn said.
"I'll find him." Malefic said.
"No, Malefic, you just got out of there, I'm not letting you go back in." J'onn said.
"It's the most logical option J'onn. I know the Phantom Zone better than anyone here. I can find Zor-El." Malefic said.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" Kara asked, looking at the younger green martian.
"It's just one small way I can make amends for all I did." Malefic said as Kara looked at him gratefully.
"Then I'm going with you." J'onn said.
"Wait, what?" Malefic asked.
"I just got you back Malefic, I am not risking losing you again." J'onn said.
"I'm going too." Alex said.
"No, you're not. I might be somewhat okay with J'onn going, but he's a martian, he has powers that might be able to help protect him from the elements there, but you don't Alex." Kara said.
"Maybe, but Kara please, you've done so much for me, for this city and this planet. Let me do this for you." Alex said.
"I'm not going to be able to talk you out of this am I?" Kara asked.
"No. One thing we have in common is that we're both very stubborn when we put our minds to something." Alex said.
"Fine, then take this." Kara said as she removed her mother's necklace and handed it to her.
"Why?" Alex asked.
"Well for one thing, it'll give you another reason to come home so you can give it back." Kara said and Alex chuckled.
"But more importantly, you'll likely need something to convince my father that you actually know me to get him to come with you and that should do it." Kara said and Alex nodded.
"We should also take Astra, since she is someone he'll actually recognize, plus her military training will be useful." J'onn said.
"We should also talk to Lena and Winn, see if they have any ideas for technology that might help make this mission slightly less suicidal." Kara said and all three of them nodded in agreement, since while Kara wanted her father back desperately, she was not willing to risk any of their lives without taking proper precautions to do it.
