Chapter 25

When the Flash arrived at the border of Gorilla City, he kept a close eye on it. He needed to figure out how to get Grodd out of there without the other gorillas noticing him, since he did not want to find himself in a gladiator arena again.

However, his problem was solved for him when he heard a large thud behind him and he turned to see Grodd standing there.

"Grodd." Flash said.

Grodd was wondering when Flash would come for him. It took him much longer than expected. Grodd said in his mind.

"You know who I am? You remember the old world?" Flash asked and Grodd nodded.

Grodd's mind was not affected by the merging of the multiverse. That is how Grodd knew about Gorilla City and that it is here now. Grodd confirmed.

"Why come here though Grodd? Why not attack us?" Barry asked.

Because that is no longer who Grodd is. Grodd said.

"What?" Flash asked.

After you and Caitlin used the neural inhibitor to shut down Grodd's cerebrum, it took him a year to find the strength to think intelligently again and in that time, he had many primitive thoughts that revealed one truth that Grodd had been lying to himself about. Grodd said.

"What truth?" Flash asked.

Grodd's actions were cruel and power seeking, but power did not bring Grodd the happiness he wanted, only pain and humiliation. Grodd said.

"You've really changed?" Flash asked, since he didn't know why, but he believed the gorilla.

Yes. Grodd remembers when there was a time when all he wanted was to not be alone. Grodd said.

"I remember that too. It's why we sent you to Gorilla City in the first place. To give you what you wanted. A home with your own kind, where you'd be free." Flash said.

Grodd knows this now, but back then, he was full of anger and rage, he let that cloud his judgement. He did not see the gift that Flash and his allies had given him. And for that, Grodd is sorry. Grodd said.

"And now?" Flash asked.

Now Grodd only wishes to stay in Gorilla City, to live a life with his own kind in peace. Though Grodd understands if Flash will not let him have this. Grodd said.

"Actually Grodd, I get it. You want to be with your own kind and honestly, the only reason we sent you to Gorilla City was because we thought you'd be happy there." Barry said as he actually removed his cowl.

Grodd was happy. Until he let his desire for power consume him. Just like father. That is another reason Grodd wishes to stay here. Grodd said.

"You came here because you hoped that it would protect you from Thawne." Barry said and Grodd nodded.

Thawne turned Grodd into a weapon. Grodd had no choice about it. And now Grodd realizes that his loyalty to Reverse Flash was foolhardy. He never cared about Grodd as anything more than a tool or a weapon. To be discarded when he was no longer useful. I'm sure that Flash can understand. Grodd said and Barry nodded.

"I do. More than even you realize." Barry said.

Grodd only wants to live in peace. Grodd repeated.

"If you'll agree to certain precautions, I'd be willing to let you stay here." Barry said.

What kind of precautions? Grodd asked.

"You let us embed a tracker in you, so we can know your location at all times as a precaution. You'll also agree to stay in Gorilla City unless we ask you to return to Central City. And finally, you'll tell me how you got here, since you couldn't exactly travel from Central City to the heart of Africa without us knowing. Agreed?" Barry asked.

Grodd agrees to this, since he understands Flash's concerns and is grateful that Flash is giving him a chance to live in peace. Grodd said.

"And how did you get here?" Barry asked.

Grodd was able to build a one time use interdimensional extrapolator using his superior intellect, though he assures you that it was destroyed after using it to get here. Which is good, because unless Flash wants Grodd there, he has no desire to return to Central City. It is no longer his home." Grodd answered.

"That makes sense. But Grodd remember, just because I'm letting you stay here does not mean I trust you. You haven't earned that yet and I'm not sure if you ever will." Barry said.

Grodd understands that he has not earned Flash's trust, so Grodd will stay away, as long as Flash allows him to stay here in peace." Grodd said.

"I will. But don't make me regret it." Barry said as he reactivated his cowl and sped off.

"So, you really believe that Grodd wants peace?" Cisco asked after Barry told them what happened.

"I think the fact that Grodd hasn't tried to attack us or ambush me when he figured out I was near Gorilla City does earn him some credit. Though we're going to be embedding a tracker in him to make sure that he doesn't leave Gorilla City without us knowing." Barry said.

"But you think that we can trust Grodd not to attack us?" Cisco asked.

"I don't know." Barry said.

"Barry, Grodd clearly said something that got to you, otherwise you would've dragged his ass back here regardless of what his intentions were." Frost said.

"Grodd reminded me that he and I have something in common." Barry said.

"What could you possibly have in common with him?" Ralph asked.

"Thawne." Barry said.

"What about him?" Frost asked.

"Thawne created Grodd to serve as a tool for his own ends." Barry said.

"Just like he did you." Cisco said.

"Exactly. Trust me, it's not thrilling to realize I have something in common with that gorilla, but he wasn't wrong. And because of that, I'm giving him a chance to prove that he's changed. But if he steps out of line, I'll make sure that it's the last time." Barry said.
