Chapter 26
"So, should I be concerned that you're dropping everything to go see a girl you went to med school with?" Grace asked as she sat in Anissa's bedroom in her dad's house, reminding her yet again that she needed to get her loft back, especially with the very handsome salary she got working for her mom's clinic.
"Relax. Mary's just a friend and while she does play for the same team as us, the reason she called is because her own girlfriend was hurt pretty badly doing her new job and she asked me to recommend a physical therapist and I decided to go visit in person." Anissa said.
"You do realize that's not helping to put my mind at ease right?" Grace asked and Anissa rolled her eyes.
"Fine, if you're so insecure, then you can come to Gotham with me." Anissa said, a bit annoyed that Grace didn't trust her.
"Anissa." Grace said, picking up on her girlfriend's mood.
"Grace, how can you not trust me? Especially since I'm not the one who has a history of telling people they love them and then ghosting them." Anissa reminded her, causing Grace to flinch.
"Okay, I deserve that." Grace admitted.
"Yeah, you did. So, you gonna cool it with the jealousy thing and actually trust me." Anissa asked.
"Anissa, I was joking." Grace said though she could tell that there was some real anger in Anissa's words.
"Yeah well, I can't change how I feel." Anissa said and Grace sighed.
"Anissa, I am sorry about ghosting you." Grace said.
"You let me think that we had something special and then just up and left like it meant nothing to you." Anissa said.
"When in reality, it meant everything to me. I didn't leave because I wanted to. I was afraid that if you found out about me, the truth about me, you'd abandon me." Grace said.
"So instead you abandoned me first." Anissa said.
"Okay, that's a bit of a low blow." Grace said and Anissa sighed, since she knew that was true.
"I'm sorry. I just never realized how much anger I had towards you for leaving like you did." Anissa said.
"Look, I should've known that there would be, since like you said, I've been on the victim side of abandonment before, pretty much all my life, and while I may not like it, you're right, I did abandon you when I left without so much as a goodbye. And we never really talked about it after I came back. In either reality." Grace said and Anissa sighed.
"Honestly, I was just so happy when I got you back, both times, I didn't want to process my anger at you." Anissa said.
"Because you were afraid that if you did, you'd scare me off." Grace said.
"Pretty much." Anissa said and Grace sighed.
"Anissa, I don't blame you for thinking that way. I admit, mentally, I wasn't in the best shape, considering how I'd freak out every five minutes about being taken away." Grace said.
"Yeah well, the ASA raids didn't help." Anissa said.
"But Anissa, I'm better now. And I'm not going anywhere. Though you really need to move out of your dad's house." Grace said.
"Really, cause your place isn't exactly what I'd call homey." Anissa said.
"Well then, sounds like a good reason for me to go to Gotham with you, we can get a comfortable hotel room there and then when we get back, we can start looking for a place together. As in your loft." Grace said.
"Our loft and we'll have to see if it's available." Anissa said and Grace nodded as Jefferson entered the room.
"Seriously dad, don't you knock?" Anissa asked.
"Considering the fact that it's still my house you live in?" Jefferson asked.
"Fair point. What do you want?" Anissa asked.
"I heard you were going to Gotham?" Jefferson asked.
"Yeah, visiting a friend there. Why?" Anissa asked.
"While you're there, see if you can track down Kate Kane, tell her Black Lightning sends his regards." Jefferson said.
"And why would the CEO of Kane Industries know who you are or who Black Lightning is?" Anissa asked.
"Because she's Batwoman." Jefferson said, surprising them both.
"Okay, maybe you should come with us to Gotham, since I'm guessing that you learned that during the Crisis?" Anissa asked.
"Yep. And I have to admit, I wouldn't say no to a trip to Gotham. Last time I was there, well, that was eventful." Jefferson said.
"Why, what happened?" Anissa asked.
"I teamed up with Batman." Jefferson said.
"Okay, you really need to start sharing more stories from your glory days and you're definitely coming with us. Maybe you could tell Batwoman the story about you and her predecessor." Anissa said.
"I'd need to get some stuff in line at the school first and also clear it with your mom, since Jen will need to stay with her." Jefferson said.
"Why can't I go to Gotham with you guys?" Jen asked.
"Were you eavesdropping?" Anissa asked.
"Why do you ask a question we both know the answer to already?" Jen asked and Anissa rolled her eyes.
"Anyways, the reason Jen is because you still have school and our deal was that you could only be Lightning if you kept up with it." Jefferson reminded her.
"Besides, with Black Lightning, Thunder and Wylde out of town, Lightning will be Freeland's only defense against Tobias Whale." Anissa pointed out.
"Okay, I feel better." Jen said as they all rolled their eyes at her as she left.
"So, when are we leaving?" Grace asked.
"A few days." Jefferson said and both girls nodded as he left them alone.
