Chapter 21
"So, how mad was Anissa when you told her you were going to help her dad with the transport?" Khalil asked Grace as they walked up to the train they'd be using to transport the metas to the airfield that was serving as a decoy base, when in reality, it was where the pods would be loaded into a specially designed Argus plane that would transport the metas to the real location.
"She was not thrilled, but she did understand her dad's concerns. What about Jen and your new parents?" Grace said with a chuckle, since Philke had become Khalil's new legal guardian.
"Philke is not happy that I'm getting back in the game so soon, but it's a screw you to the ASA, so he'll get over it. Jen on the other hand, is still pissed that I'm on this mission and she isn't." Khalil said, rolling his eyes.
"And that is why I have Gambi running surveillance on both of them until the transfer is complete." Jefferson said as he walked up to them.
"So, this is how we're transporting the metas? An old train?" Grace asked him, since the train didn't look too special.
"It's designed to look that way. No one will think twice about a regular train. Though it does have a cloaking device on it that will be activated once we leave the station. Reason it's not active yet is because it requires a lot of energy to power." Jefferson said.
"Then how are they powering it, along with the train?" Khalil asked.
"Not sure, the science is over my head." Jefferson said.
"The cloaking tech is powered by a tech that's on loan to Argus from the DEO, which is the organization that handles alien affairs." Gambi said over the comms.
"Got it. And how bad would it be if something happened to said power source?" Grace asked.
"Let's try not to think about it." Gambi said.
"He's right. We're under enough pressure as it is." Jefferson said.
"Okay, so where are we going?" Khalil asked.
"Khalil, you're taking point on protecting the room with the pods in it. It's also lined with power dampeners, so if Grace or I get too close, it would put us at a disadvantage. Grace, you'll be covering the control room with the driver." Jefferson said.
"What about you?" Grace asked.
"I'm covering the engine room. If something happens, I can recharge it and also charge off the cloaking tech power source if need be." Jefferson said.
"Not to mention if something goes wrong, he's the best person to protect the room that could blow up the entire train and probably more." Gambi said over the comms.
"Thanks for that. Okay, suit up and get in position." Jefferson said as he charged up his watch and suited up as Black Lightning as Grace shifted into Wylde and Khalil had come in his gear.
"Yeah, I don't get a quick change like you guys do." Khalil said.
"Let's get in position." Black Lightning said as he, Wylde and Khalil moved to board the train.
"Clearing the first checkpoint now." the Argus commando who was in charge of the operation said over the comms.
"Gambi, anything to report?" Black Lightning asked, since he was watching a satellite feed of the operation from the Sanctum.
"Nothing yet. But you still have a while to go, you haven't even left Freeland's perimeter yet. Though thankfully there isn't an energy shield in the way." Gambi said, referring to the ASA perimeter that had been up in the old reality.
"Hopefully the situation won't ever become so bad that we need that. But that does remind me that Tobias isn't the only threat we need to worry about during this transport, Markovia will be looking to get away with these metas too." Black Lightning said.
"Keeping eyes out for both." Gambi assured him.
"Good." Black Lightning said.
"Are you sure that intel is correct about the route the train is taking?" Instant asked Gravedigger.
"Of course. We may have lost our spies in the ASA, but fortunately, I have a contact with someone who has moles in Argus and he provided us with this intel. Why are you so insistent on questioning me?" Gravedigger asked him, annoyed.
"Because what you've hired me to do is something that I've never done. Not only are we doing a blind jump, but one into a high speed moving target. If we're off the mark by even a second, well." Instant said.
"Let me guess, we'd all die?" Gravedigger asked.
"That would be the most pleasant scenario. Trust me, you don't want to know." Instant said, trying not to think about it.
"Then let's make sure we get this jump right, since we'll only have one shot at this." Gravedigger said and Instant nodded as he took a good look at the coordinates that he'd be jumping too, along with the time table for the train, since he needed to know exactly when the train would reach the coordinates, since he needed to be sure that he was able to compensate for the slight time lag between when they disappeared from their current location and reappeared at the desired location.
"You ready?" Gravedigger asked after Instant looked away.
"As I'll ever be. But if something goes wrong, don't say I didn't warn you." Instant said.
"Just shut up and do it." Gravedigger said.
"As you wish. I'll get us to the location we'll be teleporting from and start the clock there." Instant said.
"Fine." Gravedigger said, though he could understand why his teleporter was taking these precautions. His powers wouldn't do them any good if they were all dead. Or apparently worse. But honestly, he wasn't worried about dying. He hadn't for a long time. He'd already lived a much longer life than what was natural. However, he also knew that without him, Markovia would seek to use these metas the same way he knew Argus would. And those pod kids would most likely only trust someone like them. Another meta and definitely not a government organization. Though he did take some satisfaction in knowing that the ASA had fallen and that Odell had gotten what he deserved.
"Are we going or what?" Instant asked.
"Right, I got lost in my thoughts. Let's go." Gravedigger said as Instant teleported them out of where the Markovians had set up base and to the site that would be overlooking the jump.
Unfortunately, when they arrived, they found they were not alone.
"Who are you?" Joey Toledo demanded as he and Tobias's muscle aimed guns at the Markovians and Ishmael readied his swords.
"Whoa, it looks like I'm not the only one who's interested in those metas." Gravedigger said.
"Yeah, and if you knew who we worked for, you'd be running away." Joey said.
"You really are an idiot Toledo." Ishmael said.
"Excuse me?" Joey asked.
"This is Gravedigger, he's head of Markovia's armed forces. Something tells me your boss would like to have a word with him, since between his forces and Tobias's resources here in the states, it could be beneficial." Ishmael said and Joey nodded as he pulled out his phone and called Tobias.
"Tobias Whale. I've heard of him and you're right. I would like to speak with him." Gravedigger said.
"What about the operation?" Instant asked.
"Honestly, attacking an Argus convoy like this is not smart. It seemed like a good opportunity at the time, but now, if something goes south, the US government would have justified evidence of Markovia invading. We'll find a more covert method." Gravedigger said and Instant honestly looked relieved that they wouldn't be attempting this suicide mission as Joey got off the phone.
"Mr. Whale agrees. He wants to speak with you in person. He'll even let you pick the location as a sign of goodwill." Joey said.
"Tell him I'll send Instant to get him when I pick a location. I'm sure he'll understand if I feel more comfortable meeting with him on my home turf." Gravedigger said.
"I'll pass along the message." Joey said.
"In that case, let's get out of here." Gravedigger said and Instant nodded as he teleported Gravedigger and his soldiers away.
"So, what did Tobias really say?" Ishmael asked.
"That while he doesn't trust this Gravedigger, his resources could be useful to us. We'll play nice for now until we see a chance to turn the tables." Joey said.
"Should we pack up too?" Ishmael asked.
"Yep. The boss doesn't want to risk anything ruining this deal, so we're pulling out." Joey said as he and his men headed to their vehicles to regroup.
