Chapter 8

Mary was trying hard to keep herself calm as she prepared herself for what she was about to do, but she knew that she would never truly be able to be happy in her life if she didn't do it.

That was why she was currently standing in her father's office, waiting for him to return from whatever important crows business he was dealing with, though she was pretty sure she knew what it was since the news was all over Batwoman appearing in Gotham last night and Vesper Fairchild would not shut up.

"Mary, what a pleasant surprise." Jacob Kane said with a grin as he entered to find her waiting for him.

"Yeah, Sorry for dropping by unannounced." Mary said as she hugged her father.

"Please, you know you're always welcome here. Though I have to admit, I don't have a lot of time right now." Jacob said.

"It's fine, this won't take long, there's just something I need to get off my chest. Something I probably should've told a long time ago, but I didn't know how." Mary said.

"Alright." Jacob said with a nod as he tried to keep himself from smiling, since he was pretty sure he knew what Mary's confession was going to be, but he needed to be sure that he was right.

"I'm gay." Mary said, deciding to be blunt about it and she had to admit, she did feel better after coming out to him, though she was surprised by the smile on her father's face.

"I know Mary." Jacob said.

"Wait, you knew?" Mary asked and Jacob chuckled.

"Of course I did, you forget I raised Kate. I know the signs when they're right in front of me and Mary, you were not subtle. At least not with me." Jacob said and Mary sighed in relief as she hugged her father.

"I knew you wouldn't take it too badly, but still." Mary said as she cried tears of joy at finally being free of her secret.

"You were more worried about how I'd react to that girlfriend of yours. Ryan right?" Jacob asked as he noticed the look on her face and laughed.

"How did you?" Mary asked.

"Like I said, you weren't subtle. I know all about your relationship with Ryan. And I approve of it." Jacob said.

"Really, I thought that you'd be against me dating a convict." Mary said.

"And if Ryan were actually guilty, then I would be, but after taking a closer look at her record, I realized that her story was true, she wasn't guilty. That's why I've already expunged her criminal record." Jacob said.

"Wait, what?" Mary asked, shocked.

"I figured that when you eventually came out to me, you'd want me to meet Ryan, but I also guessed that she wouldn't be very thrilled with me, so I thought it might help if I cleared her record, since she doesn't deserve to be judged for something she didn't do. I hope that will help me gain some favor with her." Jacob said and Mary smiled.

"I think it will, but still, the only reason she trusts me is because I'm not a crow. Something that will also work in Kate's favor." Mary said.

"Does Kate know?" Jacob asked.

"Yeah, she was the first person I came out to. She was the one who convinced me to come out to you." Mary said.

"I can understand that. After all, she's gone through it before, so she'd be able to give you some tips." Jacob said and Mary nodded.

"Does mom know about this?" Mary asked.

"As far as I know she doesn't, but then again, she never was as observant as I am." Jacob said.

"I just hope that she'll take it the same way you and Kate both have." Mary said.

"You know your mom loves you. This won't change that." Jacob said.

"I know, but you also know how she feels about people like Ryan." Mary said.

"You'll Kate and I in your corner. Invite her over to dinner tomorrow night. I'll even invite Sophie so that Kate can be a bit uncomfortable too if that would make you feel any better." Jacob offered.

"It would make me even happier if Kate would stop torturing Sophie and take her back already." Mary said and Jacob chuckled.

"On that we agree. But we both know how hurt Kate was when Sophie betrayed her. It'll take time for those wounds to fully heal, though I hope that her time away did help." Jacob said and Mary nodded.

"Talk to me Gotham, for those of you who somehow don't know, we got a back double feature last night. Several reports have come in that at the very ceremony held by Jacob Kane to shut off the bat signal, a new bat came in to replace our old one and this one is tougher, stronger, smarter and better than the old one for one reason. Instead of a new Batman, guess what Gotham, we're following in National City's lead of turning to a woman for protection instead of a man. That's right, we've got Batwoman and it looks like she's here to stay. Though it may be too soon to tell. However, I have to admit right now that I'm very happy to see that this bat has a sense of humor, a definite improvement over the old one, since she had to pick the night the Crows were planning to turn off the batlight to make her debut. There definitely wasn't any irony intended for that." Kate and Luke listened to Vesper Fairchild.

"She's got a point. Bruce definitely did not have that sense of humor that you do as Batwoman." Luke said and Kate smiled.

"Shh, keep listening." Kate said and Luke nodded as Vesper continued on.

"However, on the flip side, just as Batman had the Joker, it would appear that Batwoman has found her own arch enemy in the form of Gotham's newest sociopath, Alice. I for one hope that Batwoman is able to stop her before she's able to wreak anywhere near as much havoc and chaos as the Joker did. I don't know what Batman did to the Joker the last time the two of them met, but I can't help but notice that they both disappeared at around the same time. I wonder if that means that they both dealt with each other. Let's hope that Batwoman is prepared for what she's signing up for." Vesper said.

"Well, she's half right." Luke said.

"About what exactly?" Kate asked.

"What happened the last time Bruce and the Joker clashed, only one of them walked away. Bruce. That's why he left." Luke said.

"Wow, Bruce actually broke his code." Kate said.

"Napier didn't leave him any choice." Luke said.

"Trust me, I agree with you on that. I would've done the same thing, though I probably wouldn't have ghosted Gotham afterwards, since with not only Batman gone, but the Joker too, not only would there be no one to truly keep the criminals in check, but the throne of the ruler of Gotham's criminal underworld, which was occupied by the Joker. However, now there's plenty of psychopaths out there are trying to make their claims to that throne and I'm betting that whatever Alice has planned is going to be her attempt to claim it." Kate said.

"And we can't stop her until we find your mom, since right now, we can't make a move on her without risking your mom's safety." Luke said.

"We'll find her. But in the meantime, I think we should start making sure that your family got justice, since I have a feeling that the person who killed your dad is still free." Kate said.

"On that we agree. I'm already working on digging into that trinity." Luke said and Kate nodded.

"Good. Now let's get too work." Kate said.
