Chapter 4

The following day found Kate riding her bike towards Wayne Tower, since she had no intention of staying cooped up in the penthouse that she would be moving out of as soon as she found a place, preferably outside of the Crows' district. Besides, her city needed her.

Anyways, when she arrived at Wayne Tower, she found a very familiar face waiting for her.

"Welcome home Ms. Kane." Luke Fox said with a smile as he greeted her, a sure sign that his memories had been restored already, which she was grateful for, since it meant that she wouldn't need to convince him to let her put on the suit again.

"Thank you, Mr.?" Kate asked, pretending she didn't know his name, if only for the sake of appearances.

"Fox. Luke Fox." Luke said.

"Lucius's son." Kate said and Luke nodded.

"I'll show you upstairs." Luke said and Kate nodded as they headed towards the elevator, which took them up to Bruce's old and her current office.

As soon as they were in the office, Luke hugged Kate, which for once, she gladly returned.

"Welcome back Kate." Luke said.

"Did you honestly think that a plane crash could kill me?" Kate asked.

"Of course not. You're way too stubborn to be dead and even if you were, you'd probably annoy who's ever in charge of whatever afterlife you believe in to send you back." Luke said and Kate laughed.

"I wouldn't go that far." Kate said.

"So, where were you?" Luke asked.

"An island in the Mediterranean Sea called Coryana." Kate said.

"Coryana, never heard of it." Luke said.

"You wouldn't. It's uncharted and it's ruler wants to keep it that way. One of the conditions she had for letting me return was by keeping the island a secret and while I couldn't exactly say I drifted through the ocean for 5 years, I can say that I was on an uncharted, unknown island and not have too many people raise questions about it." Kate said.

"Fair enough. But why is the island's ruler so intent on keeping the world from knowing about them?" Luke asked.

"Because Coryana is the source of where Alice got the antidote that she used to save Mary after she poisoned her and her mom. It's home to the Desert Rose, a miracle cure all that the island's ruler Safiyah fears will be plundered by the outside world if it should ever find out about it and I can't exactly disagree with that." Kate said.

"Yeah, neither can I." Luke said.

"But, she did give me a going away present before I left." Kate said as she reached into her pocket and pulled out the box containing the desert rose.

"She gave you the very flower she was trying to keep from the world?" Luke asked.

"I think she was hoping that eventually I'd return to the island." Kate said and now Luke caught on.

"So you slept with her." Luke said.

"She's a gorgeous lesbian who took an interest in me, of course I did." Kate said and Luke rolled his eyes at her.

"Moving on. Is my suit ready?" Kate asked.

"Since J'onn didn't come around to give me a brain dump until about an hour before you got to the tower, no, I'm still working on it, but I promise that it will be ready in time for you to make a fool out of your dad and Catherine Hamilton tonight at the ceremony to turn off the bat light." Luke said.

"And more importantly, be there to intervene if and when Alice decides to make her grand debut again." Kate said and Luke nodded in agreement.

"Shall we head downstairs?" Luke asked.

"We shall." Kate said as she looked at the case containing her aunt Martha's pearl necklace.

"Put a tracker on that thing, since if Magpie makes another appearance here, I want to be able to track her immediately." Kate said and Luke nodded.

"Copy that." Luke said as Kate then rotated the case to reveal the hidden elevator, which they both took down to the batcave.

"Just curious, did you ever find Bruce's car?" Kate asked.

"What, the Bat bike not exciting enough for you?" Luke asked.

"For one thing, it doesn't exist on this earth yet, but more importantly, you know that it's not as cool as Bruce's car." Kate said and Luke nodded.

"Very true and so far, not yet. Wherever Bruce hid it when he left Gotham, he did a very good job." Luke said.

"And you're sure that he didn't leave it in the Batcave?" Kate asked.

"Kate, I know every inch of that cave and I haven't found it." Luke said as the elevator arrived at the Batcave.

"You know every inch of this place that Bruce showed you. But let's face it, the man was very good at keeping secrets and if I was going to hide it, I'd hide it with the rest of the bat tech, though what I don't understand is why he'd hide it more securely than anything else." Kate asked.

"So what do you suggest?" Luke asked as Kate headed towards the weapons rack and grabbed the sticky bomb launcher.

"It's simple, we do some demolition." Kate said as before Luke could stop her, Kate began firing bombs at random walls in the batcave and on her second shot, she found it.

"Hello beautiful." Kate said with a grin as she and Luke waved the smoke away to enter the newly revealed passageway to find the Batmobile sitting there, waiting to be driven.

"Okay, you were right." Luke said.

"As usual." Kate said and Luke rolled his eyes.

"You know you've been wrong several more times than you've been right." Luke said.

"Whatever, just get my suit ready while I start making some modifications to the Batmobile, since if Bruce didn't want his ride to get hijacked, he should've taken it with him." Kate said and Luke laughed.

"On that we agree." Luke said as he went to work on the suit.

At the same time as this happened, another member of the Kane family was sitting in a sugar factory, watching a video of the news report of Kate's return from the dead.

"Of course, while I sit rotting in the shadows, my dear sister is welcomed back to the land of the living like a princess, daddy dearest rolling out the red carpet for her." Alice said.

"To be fair, he still thinks you're dead." Dodgeson said to her.

"Yes, for a military man, he's never been that good about determining if people really are dead. Especially his own family. Is my special guest still secure?" Alice asked.

"Yes, but tell me again why you're holding her prisoner?" Dodgeson asked.

"For one thing, she's an insurance policy to keep Commander Kane from shooting any of us, but also, when the time is right, she'll be my bargaining chip to get my dear sweet Mouse back at my side." Alice said and Dodgeson nodded.

"But still, are you happy or angry about your sister's return?" Dodgeson asked.

"I'm overjoyed that she's alive, especially since now we have something in common. We've both been wrongfully abandoned by our father, though it seems like she came out of her situation a lot better than I did. Still, arrange for a little one on one talk with her. I need to know where she was, since given the vicinity of where her plane went down, I have an idea about where she landed, but I want to be sure before I react." Alice said.

"You really think that your father will allow for Kate to be abducted? He'll likely make Agent Moore her bodyguard. Not that I think that either of them will complain about that." Dodgeson said.

"And knowing Kate, she'll tell dad to back off and give her some space. She's never been one to like babysitters. We'll use that to our advantage." Alice said and Dodgeson nodded as they continued to talk about her plan.
