Chapter 22
It had been two weeks and the day that Ryan had both been looking forward to and dreaded had finally arrived. Her discharge date. All she was waiting on now was for Mary to arrive, since she needed to sign her discharge papers, since according to hospital policy, patients couldn't sign their own discharge paperwork and honestly, Ryan knew she'd need to spend a lot of time in rehab learning to living with only one arm before she could even sign her name. A thought that depressed her.
"Hey Ry, sorry it took me so long. Traffic was awful." Mary said as she entered the room with a bag in hand, drawing Ryan out of her thoughts.
"What's in the bag?" Ryan asked and Mary smiled.
"I thought you'd like to wear some actual clothes instead of a hospital gown when you left." Mary said.
"Even though I can't dress myself yet." Ryan said as she instinctively tried to use her right arm, only to wince in pain when the stump there tried to move.
"Hey, take it easy. I told you I was going to be here for you every step of the way." Mary said.
"Mary, you can't be there for me 24/7. You have school and your clinic to worry about." Ryan said.
"I've been taking my classes online and the other staff I have at the clinic can run it for now." Mary said.
"Still, you shouldn't have to put your whole life on hold just to take care of me." Ryan said.
"Ryan, I told you before, I'm not putting my life on hold, I'm helping you be able to live yours. So, do you want to keep arguing or do you want to let me help you change so that I can take you home." Mary asked.
"Fine." Ryan agreed, if only because she was getting tired of seeing these walls and being in this room.
"Good." Mary said as she helped Ryan out of the bed and began helping her remove the hospital gown.
"So, is there going to be a party inside?" Ryan asked as they arrived at the door of their apartment.
"Normally yes, but I figured that might be a bit too much for you right now." Mary said.
"You mean like how I wouldn't be able to hold my own drink?" Ryan asked as Mary opened the door and led Ryan into their home.
"Ryan, you will get used to this and who knows. Kate said that she's having Luke look into every option he can about prosthetics and maybe even bionics." Mary said.
"You mean, a mechanical arm?" Ryan asked.
"Yeah, think about it. You could be a superhero like Batwoman. Who knows, you might even be able to save her life. Just like how you saved Kate's." Mary said.
"I wouldn't go that far thinking I could save Batwoman's life. But I will admit that having a bionic arm is appealing." Ryan admitted.
"Well, while it is a nice thought, that kind of technology is still a while away. At least from being released to the general public." Mary said a bit grudgingly.
"Nice to know the government still cares more about itself than it's people." Ryan said.
"At least I know this hasn't changed your personality." Mary said.
"Mary, I appreciate you doing everything you can to help me and I also want to apologize in advance." Ryan said.
"For what?" Mary said.
"For the fact that I'm most likely going to be a real pain in the ass for the next few weeks." Ryan said and Mary chuckled.
"I know and it's fine. It's to be expected. But I can think of one small perk of your current condition." Mary said.
"And what might that be?" Ryan asked, hard pressed to think of anything.
"Since you can't shower yourself anymore, I'll always have to help you." Mary said with a smile.
"Really, now?" Ryan asked as she turned to face her girlfriend, but the smile on her face indicated that she was not upset about that.
"Just trying to help you find some kind of positive. Besides, it's been two weeks for both of us." Mary said.
"Can you at least wait until tonight? I'd like some time to relax and enjoy being home." Ryan said.
"Of course. I was really just trying to bring a smile to your face and mission accomplished." Mary said and Ryan smiled.
"And that's just another reason I love you. I'll add it to the list." Ryan said and Mary smiled as she kissed Ryan.
"I've gone through all of my dad's plans and I can't find any designs for any kind of prosthetics. Which is weird considering I thought he would've considered making something in case Bruce lost a limb in his fights." Luke said.
"He probably put too much faith that the suit would protect him from that." Kate said.
"True. But still, it looks like I'm gonna be starting from scratch on developing something for Ryan and that is going to take time." Luke said.
"Especially since biotech isn't your strong suit." Kate said.
"No kidding. I'm not even sure where to begin, since while building the arm would be simple enough, designing an interface for it to connect to Ryan's brain, that's a completely new ballpark." Luke said.
"I might know someone who can help. Or at least someone who knows someone who can help." Kate said.
"Who?" Luke asked, but before Kate could respond, her phone rang.
"Hold that thought." Kate said as she saw it was Helena.
"You get anything?" Kate asked.
"No, but that's not why I'm calling. Kate, you need to come down here." Helena said.
"I thought we agreed that Batwoman couldn't interrogate a prisoner in Crows custody." Kate said.
"It's not about that. It's your dad." Helena said and now Kate truly turned serious.
"Is he okay?" Kate asked.
"I don't know. He's been barricaded inside his office for the past few weeks. I haven't seen him sleep or eat since he came in. He won't talk to me or Sophie and since Mary has her hands full with Ryan's homecoming, that leaves you. Plus, you won't be as sensitive about his feelings as Mary would be anyways." Helena said.
"I'll head over there." Kate said.
"What was that?" Luke asked.
"Helena's concerned about my dad. Apparently he's trying to work himself to death. I better go check on him." Kate said.
"Sounds like you might need to convince Commander Kane to take his first personal day ever." Luke said.
"Let's hope it's not that bad." Kate said as she grabbed her jacked before heading out of her office towards the elevator.
