Chapter 2

"I wish I could convince you to stay." Safiyah said to Kate as they walked along the beaches of Coryana for the last time.

"You know a part of me wants to, but I think we both know that I was never going to stay here forever. Coryana is your home Safiyah, not mine. And my home, my family, I've been away from them for too long. Plus, there are questions that need answering and I can't find those answers here." Kate said.

"And there is the fact that you love another more than you love me." Safiyah said and Kate sighed.

"You know I never lied about how I felt about you. My time with you was the only good thing that came out of my crash and being cut off from society." Kate said.

"But you love the girl who broke your heart more than you love me." Safiyah said.

"I can't choose who I love. Believe me, I wish I could, but because then I'd be able to move on from Sophie, but I can't. And our time together has shown me that I can forgive her for what she did. You've shown me a lot of things about myself that I never even considered before I came here and I'll always be grateful to you for that." Kate said and Safiyah nodded.

"I know. Gotham needs Kate Kane far more than Coryana does. However, consider this a parting gift and a reminder that should you change your mind, you'll always have a place waiting for you here." Safiyah said as she handed Kate a small box and Kate was surprised at what she found inside.

"Is this?" Kate asked.

"A single desert rose." Safiyah confirmed.

"I thought the first rule of this island was that no one was allowed to take a desert rose off the island." Kate said.

"Well, one of the perks of being Queen is that I can make exceptions when I'm feeling generous and I consider this such a circumstance. Just remember, keep this to yourself. This is only enough for one dose of the serum and you know that I don't do mail orders." Safiyah said.

"That's fine, hopefully I won't even need this single dose." Kate said, though she also knew that she'd likely need Mary to run a transfusion of her blood to extract any remaining Desert Rose serum in her blood, since even though it had been five years, she was sure that there were still some residual traces of the serum in her veins.

"Can never be too careful." Safiyah said as Kate closed the box.

"I promise, I'll keep this and Coryana's existence a secret, as long as you don't give me a reason to reveal it to the world." Kate said and Safiyah nodded.

Jacob Kane was currently sitting in his office at Crows HQ, nursing a drink and preparing for the ceremony to shut off the bat light tomorrow night when his phone rang and he saw that it was an unknown number.

"Who are you and what do you want?" Jacob asked gruffly, only to drop his drink when he heard the voice on the other end of the call.

"Dad, it's me, it's Kate." Kate's voice said and since Jacob refused to allow himself to feel the hope that this was real, he felt nothing but anger.

"I don't know who you are, but you have some nerve making a prank call like this. You hang up right now before I trace this call and put you in the ground." Jacob said as he prepared to hang up.

"No dad, it's really me. It's Kate." Kate insisted, not at all surprised by how her father was reacting.

"Tell me something only Kate would know." Jacob said, allowing just a tiny glimmer of hope to enter his heart.

"I still have the ruby necklace mom gave me at my bat mitzvah. The ruby is my birthstone." Kate said and now Jacob was glad he was already sitting down, because he knew that his legs would give out, since only Kate could know that.

"Kate, it's really you." Jacob said, tears of joy streaming down his face at the prospect of his daughter being alive.

"Yeah dad, it's me. Just don't hang up." Kate said.

"I won't. But Kate, where have you been?" Jacob asked.

"On an island in the mediterranean, suffering amnesia until recently. I'm on a boat back to civilization and I'll be returning to Gotham by tomorrow." Kate said and Jacob practically wept in relief as he felt a weight being lifted off his shoulders.

"I'll handle everything. Just come home safely." Jacob said.

"I will. I've missed you so much dad." Kate said and Jacob smiled.

"I've missed you too. I never thought I'd hear your voice again." Jacob said.

"I'll see you soon. And dad, can you do me a favor?" Kate asked.

"Name it." Jacob said.

"Make sure both Sophie and Mary are waiting with you when I get back tomorrow." Kate said and Jacob smiled.

"Consider it done." Jacob said, since he knew that he wouldn't be able to keep either of them away from this if he wanted too.

"I need to go, but I promise, we'll see each other again soon." Kate said.

"Can't wait. Be safe." Jacob said as he heard Kate hang up and took deep breaths and even pinched himself to ensure that this was real.

"Everything alright sir?" Sophie Moore asked as she entered his office.

"We're both taking the day off tomorrow." Jacob said.

"Okay, that's kind of sudden. Can I ask why?" Sophie asked.

"Because I just got a call from Kate. She's alive and before you say anything, she confirmed who she was by telling me something only the real Kate would know." Jacob said and now Sophie believed him.

"She's alive." Sophie said, so relieved, since she thought that Kate had died hating her, but now she had a chance to make amends and since she'd already come out to and become estranged from her mother about a year ago, there was nothing stopping her from doing whatever it took to get Kate to give her another chance. Five years was a long time to do nothing besides think about regrets and Sophie's biggest one was not leaving Point Rock with Kate when she'd had the chance.

"Call Mary, let her know that this is happening. I need to make all the necessary arrangements for Kate's return." Jacob said and Sophie nodded as she pulled out her phone to call Mary.

"That was fun." Mary said with a smile as she collapsed on the bed, utterly exhausted from the activities of last night.

"Yeah it was. Though it would've been better if you'd used your real name when we checked in." Ryan Wilder said with a simple as she placed small love bites on Mary's neck and shoulder.

"I told you I'm not ready for that. I'm still trying to work up the nerve to come out to my parents." Mary said.

"Look Mary, I get that, I do, but we've been together for nearly two years now. I'm not sure how much longer I can put up with being your dirty little secret." Ryan said.

"It won't be forever and I promise I'm not ashamed of you. Honestly, if it weren't for you, I'm sure I'd still be in the same shape I was when we first met." Mary said and her phone rang before Ryan could respond.

"Perfect timing as always." Mary said with a groan as she picked up her phone and saw it was Sophie calling her.

"What's going on?" Mary asked, thinking this was Sophie checking in on her.

"Mary, Kate's alive." Sophie said, causing Mary to shoot upwards before grabbing the sheet to make sure that she was still covered.

"What?" Mary asked.

"I know it's hard to believe, but your dad just got a call from her a few minutes ago and confirmed that it really is her. Her flight gets in tomorrow and she wants you to be there." Sophie said.

"Try and keep me away. Send me her flight info so I can meet you there." Mary said as she hung up.

"What was that about?" Ryan asked.

"My sister's alive and she's coming home." Mary said, tears of joy coming to her eyes.

"You mean your lesbian sister Kate?" Ryan asked.

"Yeah and I think that I want her to be the first person I come out to. She can probably help me come out to my parents." Mary said.

"Then I like her already." Ryan said.

"Yeah, keep thinking that when she goes through the overprotective sibling speech with you. God I've lost track of how many boys she scared away from me in high school." Mary said.

"And I'm liking her more and more." Ryan said with a smile.

"You know, Kate's flight doesn't get in till tomorrow, but I'm feeling the need to celebrate now." Mary said, a suggestive tone in her voice as she laid back down on the bed.

"I thought you were too tired." Ryan asked teasingly.

"Second wind. Or maybe fifth wind. But are you really going to argue?" Mary asked.

"Not one bit." Ryan assured her as she climbed on top of Mary and brought their lips together.

That's right, I'm pairing Ryan and Mary together in this story, since honestly, considering the chemistry between them in the show, that's who I'm shipping Ryan with. Hope you guys enjoy it and remember my comments section is not a place for random complaints.
