Chapter 16

Alice was seething. Her miserable sister had ruined all her plans in just couple strokes, since Alice could no longer kill Catherine Hamilton with her locked up at Blackgate, along with several corrupt city officials she may have been able to bribe into letting her get her hands on Catherine, since unlike Batman, Kate was also rounding up corrupt political officials and her accursed father was doing the same. The worst part about it was that Kate had recently made a massive donation to the Arkham Asylum to help upgrade their security system, making it even harder for Alice to get her Mouse out of there. And technically, she hadn't done anything to ruin her plans on purpose, which meant that Alice could not retaliate through her mother, since then, Kate would think that they'd hurt her mother regardless. Something that she did like the idea in her head, she also knew that it wouldn't work well for her plans, even if she now had to change them.

Anyways, she was driven from her thoughts when she heard someone approaching from behind her and quickly whirled around, knife in hand, preparing to kill whoever it was that was sneaking up on her, only to stop when she saw it was Mouse.

"My dear Mouse." Alice said as she hugged him.

"It's good to see you again Alice." Mouse said.

"How did you escape? I thought that Arkham's security systems were upgraded." Alice said.

"They were, but someone made arrangements to have me transferred to a different facility and the convoy was attacked. I thought it was you." Mouse said.

"No, it wasn't me. Did you see anything about the people responsible?" Alice asked.

"No, whoever did it, they made sure no one knew." Mouse said.

"Well regardless, this is good news. Especially since plans have changed." Alice said.

"How so?" Mouse asked her.

"My no good sister has thrown a wrench in my plans, since Catherine Hamilton is now untouchable in her cell at Blackgate, mainly because I have no desire to risk getting thrown into another cell myself." Alice said and Mouse nodded in agreement.

"So, what are we going to do now?" Mouse asked.

"First, we find out who freed you, since they could be useful in whatever new plan we come up with. However, in the meantime, I think you need a new face." Alice said.

"I'm guessing it's not to cover up my burns, since you've made it clear that you've had no problem with them." Mouse said.

"No. You see, Hamilton Dynamics is developing a toy that will help us deal with Batwoman, who is Kate, but I heard from a few old contacts that Kate herself is planning on acquiring Hamilton Dynamics and shutting the project down. But you are going to get it for us first." Alice said and now Mouse understood.

"So, who will I be acting as?" Mouse asked.

"I'll let you know when I figure it out, but in the meantime, start working on your business man impersonation, since while stealing is easier, it also brings unnecessary heat on us. So instead, we're going to buy it, since trust me, right about now Hamilton Dynamics will be trying to get rid of anything incriminating, so I'm sure a weapon that can pierce the Batsuit will be one of the first things to go." Alice said.

"You always were the smart one." Mouse said.

"I got the brains and looks. You're just the decoy." Alice said playfully and Mouse chuckled.

"But one you can't seem to do anything without." Mouse reminded her.

"Very true." Alice agreed.

"What do you mean he escaped? The whole reason I made that donation to Arkham was to keep Mouse in it." Kate asked Luke after he told her the news the following day.

"He didn't escape from Arkham. Someone ordered him to be transferred out to a different facility and the convoy was attacked." Luke said.

"You think Alice was responsible?" Kate asked.

"I don't think so. For one thing, she doesn't have the resources to arrange something like this, since while she could've executed the break out, there's no way she could've arranged the transfer, since we both know that it was part of the trap." Luke said.

"Yeah. So we've got another player. One who knows enough about Alice to realize how significant Mouse is to her." Kate said.

"Any ideas?" Luke asked.

"Only one, but she wouldn't do this, since we had a deal." Kate said.

"Still, don't you think it's worth at least pursuing the lead?" Luke asked.

"Maybe." Kate agreed as Helena joined them.

"I'm guessing you two were talking about the attack on the Arkham transfer convoy?" Helena asked.

"Yep, and I'm guessing that the Crows are having a field day about it." Kate said and Helena nodded.

"I've managed to get Uncle Jake to put me in charge of the case, which means that we'll know everything before anyone else." Helena said.

"Good. Especially since we've already determined the id of our escapee and it's actually a familiar name." Kate said as they headed down to the Batcave.

"What do you mean?" Helena asked as they arrived in the Batcave.

"The escaped criminal's name is Jonathan Cartwright, who according to his file is the son of a Dr. August Cartwright and the last time I saw him was the day my dad and I showed up at his house to search for Beth and my mom." Kate said.

"You think it's the same family?" Helena asked.

"It's the only thing that makes sense about this. I mean, my guess is that if Beth was being held by Cartwright, she might've come to see his son as a brother, so she'd do anything to help him. Even arrange to break him out of prison." Kate said.

"I'll share this intel with your dad, not telling him where I got it of course, but I'm sure he'll be interested in this so we'll send a team to the Cartwright residence to confirm your theory." Helena said and Kate nodded.

"We still don't know who's behind this, since Alice doesn't have the resources needed to arrange what's most likely a fake prisoner transfer to get Cartwright out of Arkham in the first place." Luke said.

"Just add that to the list of questions that we need answers to." Kate said and both Luke and Helena nodded in agreement as they got to work.
