Chapter 14

That night, Kate and Luke were standing in the Batcave, watching the news report regarding Catherine's arrest, since it had not taken long for word about that to spread.

"Today has been quite a day for surprises as we learn that Catherine Hamilton, the CEO of Hamilton Dynamics, has been arrested for charges of corruption, since we have now learned that she paid off Gotham City officials to fake the results of the DNA tests for both Gabi and Beth Kane after the two were thought to be dead after a car crash 15 years ago. Ms. Hamilton's family has been unavailable for comment, though rumor is that her marriage to Crows founder Jacob Kane is now over and while Commander Kane himself has refused to comment at this time, he has announced that the Crows will be launching an intensive investigation to find out just how far this corruption in the GCPD goes. His daughters Kate Kane and Mary Hamilton have also been unavailable for comment, though there have been questions about whether or not Mary Hamilton will take her mother's place as the new CEO of Hamilton Dynamics." Dana Dewitt said over the news, right as Kate paused it.

"Not a chance. Mary wants nothing to do with anything regarding her mother." Kate said.

"How's she holding up?" Luke asked.

"Ryan's with her now, I told her I'd stop by to check in on her later. But I do have another reason." Kate said.

"And that would be?" Luke asked.

"To get Mary's permission to buy Hamilton Dynamics and make it a part of Wayne Enterprises, in that way, I can ensure that the coil accelerator is shut down and destroyed and also actually direct the company to do some real good in the world." Kate said and Luke nodded.

"I think that's a smart move, especially getting Mary's blessing first, though I also think that you should wait awhile, otherwise, it might look like you accused Catherine just so that you could acquire her company, which wouldn't be good for making sure that Catherine does serve her time and it also wouldn't look good for you, since that might not send out the best message for this company." Luke said.

"And here I thought you weren't business savvy." Kate said with a smile.

"I said I didn't know much about real estate. Actual business however, that's another story." Luke said and Kate chuckled.

"Speaking of, I need your help with something not Batwoman related.

"Okay, with what?" Luke asked.

"Finding investors to help get this company back on its feet." Kate said.

"Wow, you almost sound like a real business woman." Luke said.

"Shut up." Kate said as she smacked him.

"So, what's the plan in the meantime." Luke asked.

"We make sure that Catherine can't buy her way out by taking down the guilty trinity. We'll go after Calverick, since we know that he actually has hard evidence of their guilt." Kate said.

"Sounds like a plan. You want some Huntress help?" Luke asked.

"No. Not sure I can trust Helena, simply because of what she was in the old reality." Kate said.

"You mean a villain?" Luke asked and Kate nodded.

"Kate, we can't just judge Helena for actions she committed in another life. Besides, from what I remember, it sounds like she just wanted her father Frank Bertinelli to pay and then she began to atone." Luke said.

"Still, it's hard to break a habit." Kate said.

"She's also your cousin and has been since Bruce adopted her when she was a baby." Luke said.

"I know. That's why I'm willing to work with her at all." Kate said.

"Kate, look at it this way, as long as Helena doesn't get a brain dump, then she's good." Luke said and Kate finally nodded in acceptance of that.

"I'd ask you if you're okay, but I think I know the answer to that." Ryan said to her girlfriend as she sat down with Mary in her family's penthouse.

"I just, I can't believe that my mom would do something like this. How could she leave Kate's mom and sister to who knows what?" Mary asked.

"I don't know. You know I was never really a fan of your family besides Kate right." Ryan said.

"You made it very clear. But my dad is not as bad as you thought he was, considering he expunged your criminal record." Mary said.

"Yeah, but I still have meetings with my parole officer." Ryan said.

"He can't fix everything." Mary said and Ryan said.

"I know. I was just trying to get a smile on your face." Ryan said.

"I appreciate that Ryan, but I'm not in the mood." Mary said to her girlfriend.

"I know. Still, I thought it was worth a shot. But Mary, now I need to ask you something. Where do you go from here? You're not your mom, but people are going to want to know how you're going to react to this." Ryan asked.

"Well, since I want nothing to do with my mom right now, I'm honestly thinking about talking to my dad about taking his last name and disowning my mom." Mary said.

"What about your mom's company?" Ryan asked.

"Since her shares passed to me, along with my own, I am now one of the majority shareholders of Hamilton Dynamics, which I don't want. Honestly, if it weren't for the fact that it would put a lot of good people out of their jobs, I'd just let the whole company crumble. Hopefully the board can handle the PR nightmare until they appoint a new CEO. Hopefully one without a criminal record." Mary said.

"We can only hope." Ryan agreed as she continued to comfort Mary.

"But how can I be sure I won't be like her?" Mary asked.

"Because if you were, I wouldn't be dating you or have fallen in love with you." Ryan said.

"I'm serious Ryan." Mary said before she and Ryan both realized what Ryan had just said.

"Did you just say that you loved me?" Mary asked, since while she and Ryan had been together for years, they still hadn't said those words to each other yet.

"Yeah, I did. And honestly, it felt way overdue. But now do you have anything to say to me?" Ryan asked nervously, but Mary smiled as she kissed her.

"Does that answer your question?" She asked.

"I still need to hear you say the words Mary." Ryan said.

"I know, I just wanted to calm you down first. I do love you Ryan Wilder. With everything in me." Mary said and Ryan smiled.

"Not exactly how I think either of us pictured finally saying it to each other." Ryan said.

"No, but it did manage to take my mind off my mom and assure me that I'll never become like her, since I have someone to always keep me grounded to my morals. You." Mary said as she kissed Ryan again as Ryan smiled, knowing that she'd done something right.

"You know, I can think of another way we can take your mind off things." Ryan said as Mary quickly caught on to her train of thought.

"Well, dad and Kate shouldn't be home for a while, so we should be good." Mary said as she led Ryan towards her bedroom.

Jacob Kane was surprised when he saw Kate enter his office.

"Hey, so word leaked about Catherine." Kate said.

"You were right about everything. About your mother, about Beth, you even told me that Catherine was not the person I should move on with." Jacob said to her.

"Dad, I didn't come here to hear you say that I was right. Believe me, I wish I wasn't, because it means that Beth and mom have been suffering for god knows how long to who knows what." Kate said.

"We're gonna get them back and I promise you this time, I'm not going to give up." Jacob said and Kate smiled.

"I know. But dad, I think that there's something else we need to talk about." Kate said.

"Okay, and that would be." Jacob asked.

"Your hatred of Batman." Kate said.

"You hated him too." Jacob said.

"Until I had some time to think about things with an unbiased perspective. What happened to mom and Beth was not his fault and before you go about blaming Batman for creating the Joker, don't forget that Jack Napier was a maniac long before Batman came along. Honestly, Batman is the only reason that this city hasn't been torn apart by the Joker or Bane or the Penguin or any of the crazies. And are you forgetting that while he may not have saved mom and Beth, he did save me, along with a dozen other innocent kids. Do their lives and all the other lives he's saved not matter to you simply because he didn't save two?" Kate asked.

"It does sound rather petty when you put it like that." Jacob admitted.

"So why do you blame him dad? You'll never truly be able to find peace until you confront it." Kate said.

"And how would you know that?" Jacob asked.

"Because I already did. I realized that the reason I hated Batman for not saving mom and Beth is because it was easier to do that than to blame myself. I still have nightmares about watching the car go over the edge of that bridge. You never saw that, but I did. No matter how hard I try to unsee it. And I blamed Batman so I wouldn't have to blame myself for not at least pulling Beth to safety." Kate said, everything she was saying was completely true, since honestly, being Batwoman had helped her come to terms with her guilt over that and truly letting go of her anger towards Batman and while she knew why her dad hated Batman, she knew that he needed to admit it to himself.

"Then you know why I hate him. I have to hate him, hate that symbol, because if I don't, then I have to hate myself. It's a husband and a father's job to protect his family and I failed to do that." Jacob said as Kate placed a hand on his shoulder.

"It wasn't your fault dad. The only person to blame for what happened is the Joker." Kate said.

"I know, but I couldn't even bring him to justice, Batman did." Jacob said.

"Dad, if you ever want to be able to move forward with your life, you have to let go of the past." Kate said.

"I know. But it's so hard." Jacob said.

"I know dad, believe me I know. But it is worth it." Kate said.

"Well, I might be willing to give this new Batwoman a shot, but I won't make any promises." Jacob said.

"The fact that you're even considering this proves that you're changing. Now, I'm going to check on Mary. Will you be okay?" Kate asked as Jacob wiped the tears that were starting to come to his eyes away.

"Yeah, but Kate, can you do me one favor?" Jacob asked.

"What?" Kate asked.

"You've strung Sophie along far enough and you're going to need someone as much as Mary and I will. I think it's time you give her another chance." Jacob said and Kate smiled.

"I will keep that in mind, but she has to be the one to ask me. That's how I'll know that she's really ready for this." Kate said as she walked out of his office.
