Chapter 7

Roy was surprised when he answered the door of his, for lack of a better word, house, to find Lyla waiting there.

"Lyla, is everything alright?" Roy asked.

"Yeah, at least, for me. Things between Johnny and I could not be going better, Oliver is back and no longer in any more danger of dying than he usually is from his line of work and I'm working on reforming Argus, though leaving the Ninth Circle alone as per Oliver's request. I'm more concerned about you." Lyla said.

"I'm fine. Truly. Could not be better." Roy said as he walked away from her.

"Yeah, why don't you try telling that to someone who doesn't lie for a living." Lyla said as she noticed the state of Roy's home.

"I'm fine." Roy repeated.

"No, you're not. You're still beating yourself up for something that happened in another reality. Actions that don't even exist anymore and never will." Lyla said.

"Yeah, you'd think that would make me better, except, when J'onn restored my memories, he also reminded me of everything I've done. Every innocent person I've killed. I thought that rejoining the team, being Arsenal, would help me, but it doesn't. I still see them when I close my eyes." Roy said.

"Is that why you haven't tried to patch things up with Thea? It doesn't take a genius to see that you still love her." Lyla said.

"She deserves better than me. She's a hero. I'm a monster." Roy said.

"You seem to be forgetting that Thea has the same demons as you. She's dealt with them. Having killed someone without being aware of it, the bloodlust, she's been through that too. And unlike you, she has the blood of one of her closest friends on her hands." Lyla reminded him.

"Yeah, I know. And honestly, I'm envious of how easily she's been able to move past it. That's something that I am still struggling with. Though I will admit that being with the team did help. It's just not enough though." Roy said.

"You don't feel like you're doing enough to atone for your actions." Lyla said.

"Not really. And I'm not sure I ever will." Roy said.

"Well, I think I may know something that will help with that." Lyla said.

"What?" Roy asked.

"I find myself in need of an agent. Preferably one who's very loyal and is a very good shot. Sound like anyone you know?" Lyla asked.

"We both know Oliver's not interested in working for Argus." Roy said.

"True, but we both know I wasn't talking about him." Lyla said and Roy chuckled humorlessly.

"Yeah, right. You really want me to be an Argus agent?" Roy asked.

"Yes I do. After Johnny killed his brother and was arrested after he'd been framed, he didn't want to leave because he felt like prison was his way to repent for killing his brother." Lyla said.

"From what I hear, Andy had it coming." Roy said.

"I agree with that. But my point is that John felt like he needed to atone for what he did and Oliver convinced him to do it as Spartan." Lyla said.

"Yeah well, I've tried doing my penance as Arsenal. Hasn't really given me the closure or peace I needed. Not enough of it anyways." Roy said.

"I know. But I think that being an Argus agent will." Lyla said.

"And what about the team. I can't just pick up and abandon for missions across the country, overseas. They're counting on me." Roy said.

"What's this really about? Because you've left before." Lyla reminded him.

"Because I had no choice." Roy said.

"I wasn't planning on sending you overseas, not unless your particular skill set was necessary. There's plenty of work that can be done here in Star City." Lyla said.

"You really think that this will help me?" Roy asked.

"I do. Everyone has a darkness inside them, Oliver is proof of that. You just need to find a healthy way to release it. Everyone deals with it in a different way. Being Arsenal isn't enough for you, but I think that this will." Lyla said and Roy thought about it for a moment before nodding.

"When do I start?" Roy asked and Lyla smiled.

"Come by HQ tomorrow morning. We'll get everything settled then. But a little advice." Lyla said.

"This will be good." Roy said.

"Talk to Thea. I think you owe her a conversation." Lyla said.

"Is that an order?" Roy asked with a slight smile.

"No, just some friendly advice. Another thing that might help you is if you don't keep pushing her away. You're miserable enough as it is dealing with the darkness in you. Don't make yourself any more miserable by pushing the person you love the most away." Lyla said.

"Yeah, I'd love too, but I'm pretty sure Thea would rather put an arrow in me than give me another chance and frankly, I don't blame her." Roy said.

"Still, I think you owe her a talk. Among other things." Lyla said.

"Might as well do it while her crazy, arrow shooting brother is still in Central City." Roy said.

"I think we both know that Oliver is not the one you need to worry about." Lyla said.

"Fair enough." Roy said, knowing that Lyla was right.

"I didn't think you'd come." Roy said the next time he opened the door to find Thea waiting for him.

"I almost didn't. But then I figured I'd hear whatever explanation you have before I turn you over to Ollie." Thea said and Roy sighed.

"I wouldn't blame you if you did. Hell, I am amazed that you haven't put any arrows in me yet." Roy said.

"I'm honestly more partial to taking your arm off." Thea said and Roy actually chuckled.

"Well I deserve that. And probably worse. But Thea, I didn't ask you to come here to beg for forgiveness, I know I don't deserve it and I probably don't even deserve you. But I do feel that I should at least try and explain why I did what I did." Roy said.

"What, you mean ghosting me. Again." Thea asked.

"I know. I thought that I needed to deal with my actions, my demons alone." Roy said.

"And you forgot that I know a thing or two about them. I've dealt with the bloodlust, I've dealt with having killed people who didn't deserve it because I was drugged by one of Oliver's enemies. I know the dark places that it can take you. I could've helped you if you'd let me." Thea said.

"I didn't want you to see me like that." Roy said and Thea sighed.

"You saw me when I was at my lowest point. And you helped me through it. I could've done the same for you." Thea said.

"I have a harder time asking for help than you do." Roy said.

"Even so, I could've helped you." Thea said.

"I know. I just, I didn't want to pull you down with me." Roy said.

"I wouldn't have let you. I could've pulled you back up. But you never even gave me a chance to try." Thea said.

"I know. And for that I'm sorry. I'm not expecting forgiveness, but I thought I should at least offer you an explanation, not that I'm expecting." Roy said, only to be cut off by Thea kissing him.

"You talk too much." Thea said with a smile as she pulled away.

"That was not how I saw this conversation going." Roy said with a smile.

"I just wanted to hear why you did what you did. But, I need to know now before we go any further, will you bail on me if something like this happens again?" Thea asked.

"No, this time, I promise you, I'm in this for the long haul." Roy said.

"Good. Because if you do bail on me again, I'll kill you myself. Understood?" Thea said.

"Loud and clear." Roy said.

"Good." Thea said as she kissed him again and this time, she let things progress.
