Chapter Three
Asher stood at the stove, staring at the eggs cooking on the pan. What was he going to do with this woman? Was he going to keep her here? Could he keep her here? There were too many questions floating around his head. He wanted her to answer every question but didn't want to push her. She seemed way too fragile at the moment to be moving anything on her.
Asher heard movement behind him. He turned his head and smiled at Miya. She was tiny; he hadn't noticed how small she was before. She was way too skinny for his liking. Miya sat down gingerly at the table and gave him a small smile. She was wearing one of his black t-shirts tucked into a pair of sweatpants. The legs were rolled up enough to her ankles, and the hem of her pants was rolled to fit her tiny waist.
"Are you hungry?" he asked her as he returned to the eggs. He quickly moved them around on the pan. He grimaced slightly at them. He already burnt them. "Damn it," he hissed under his breath.
"Is everything alright?"
Asher cursed as his body jumped at Miya standing beside him. He never heard her move next to him. Was she that quiet, or was he not paying attention as he should? No one had ever snuck up on him before.
Miya's blue eyes stared up innocently at him. "I'm sorry if I scared you, sir."
"A-Asher," he stammered. He inwardly kicked himself. He turned his attention back to the eggs. He grabbed a plate from the cupboard and dumped the eggs onto the plate. "My name is Asher."
"Asher," Miya slowly said his name. She held out her hands, and he placed the plate of eggs in them. "I'll take these to the table."
Asher nodded. He stopped at the refrigerator and took out the jelly. He had already made toast and placed them in the middle of the kitchen table. He set the jelly down and handed Miya a fork. "Eat as much as you like." He shrugged sheepishly. "I'm sorry they're a little burnt."
Miya shrugged as she took a bite of the eggs. "They taste good, Mr. Asher."
Asher shook his head. "Just, Asher. Not Mr. Asher. Asher." He turned and walked down to the spare bedroom. He opened the door and smiled at Declan. He was rolled over on his stomach, smiling at Asher through the cracks in the crib. "Good morning, young man." He picked him up and cradled him close to his chest. Asher could listen to Declan's little coos all day but knew that if he didn't feed the boy, he would have a crying baby on his hands.
Asher walked back into the kitchen and grabbed the bottle on the counter. He sat in the chair across from Miya and offered Declan the bottle.
"Is he yours?" Miya asked in a small voice from across the table.
Asher couldn't help the smile that formed on his lips. "No. He's my boss's son. I'm just babysitting for them while they're out of town. He is my godson." He watched as Declan's small hands grabbed the bottle and started to suck on the nipple. Asher did want children of his own but knew those days were behind him. He didn't know if he would ever find another woman he loved and wanted to have a family with. Asher looked up at Miya and noticed the sad look on her face. "What's wrong?"
Miya's eyes snapped up to his for a few seconds before looking back at her plate. She gave him a long shrug. "I can't seem to remember my family."
Asher's eyebrows furrowed. "Miya." She looked back up at him. "You told me last night that you were running from your family." He shifted Declan in his arms.
Miya shook her head quickly. "I already told you. I don't remember what happened last night. I don't remember if I have a family or not." She straightened up, her eyes suddenly turning serious. "Why would I run from my family?"
Asher shook his head. "I don't know why one would run from their family, but Miya. You were covered in blood."
Miya stabbed a piece of egg with her fork. "I wish I could give you answers, Asher, but I don't have any answers for you." She suddenly looked nervous. "I wish I could remember," her voice was small.
Asher grabbed Declan's barf rag and threw it over his shoulder. He placed the empty bottle onto the table and maneuvered Declan so he could gently pat his back. "Your memories will come back to you, Miya. You must have hit your head so hard last night." He listened to Declan give a tiny burp. "We'll go out later and get you clothes, so you don't have to wear mine."
Miya's eyebrows furrowed as she looked at him. "You'll do that for me? You don't know me."
Asher shook his head. "You're right. I don't know you." He moved Declan so he was sitting up on his lap. "But I do know the look of someone who needs help. I'll help you figure out your memories, and you'll stay with me until we get answers." He smiled at her. "I'll stay on the couch so you can sleep in a bed." He looked up at the clock. "My boss's nanny will be here soon to get Declan. I already called her this morning. After she has my godson, we'll go out."
"Thank you," Miya breathed out. "I hope we do get answers soon."
