Chapter Six
Asher still couldn't believe that the woman sleeping in his bed was a member of the Moore family. She didn't look dangerous. Nothing about her seemed hazardous to him. Her eyes always seemed like they held more than she knew, but she didn't look like she could hurt a fly.
"Looks can be deceiving," he murmured to himself. He pushed himself off the door frame and gently closed the door, careful not to disturb Miya. He then moved to Declan's room and ensured his godson was still asleep before heading into the living room.
He ensured every door and window was locked before he sat down on the couch. Asher couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. The feeling hadn't left him since he had taken Miya shopping. If her family had tried to kill her before, they wouldn't stop. He knew the kind of people that the Moore family were. They weren't the kind that would give up when they lost. No. They would make sure that someone finished the job, even if that meant killing one of their own. Since they had returned from the city, he kept every blind closed.
"Asher?" Miya's voice squeaked behind him.
Asher turned around on the couch and forced a smile onto his face. Miya was leaning against the wall, her arms crossed tightly against her chest. She was wearing his clothes again. Her stark white hair hung slightly over her face as she looked at him. "What's wrong, Miya?" He motioned to sit next to him on the couch. At first, Miya hesitated but eventually moved and sat down beside him. She pulled her knees up to her chest and rested her chin on her knees. Asher waited to see if she would speak up first, but she didn't. "Is something wrong?" She had sat on the other side of the couch, careful not to touch him.
Miya's eyes darted to him briefly before looking back at the blank television. "I had a bad dream."
Asher's smile dropped a little as he nodded his head. "Do you want to talk about it?"
Miya shrugged her shoulders. "I'm not even sure I know what my dream was." She closed her eyes and hugged her legs harder. "There was so much blood," she whispered, her voice breaking. "So much blood. My hands were covered in blood. I don't know who caused the massacre, but I feel like it was me."
Asher reached forward and gently placed a hand on her shoulder. Miya flinched, making him rip his hand back. "I'm sorry," Asher apologized quickly.
Miya shook her head as her body relaxed. "No," she murmured. "I'm sorry." She turned her body towards him. "You've been nothing but kind and helpful to me. I'm sure I've caused quite a mess with you and your boss."
Asher chuckled as he shook his head. "You haven't. He knows who your family is and who you are, but he's not making me kick you out." He slowly reached forward and grabbed her hand. He gave it a gentle squeeze. "You're safe here, Miya."
Miya nodded. "I wish I could remember what happened. You have told me about my family, but I don't remember it." She shook her head. "I show up on your doorstep covered in blood with little answers."
Asher shrugged as he let go of her hand. "We've got enough answers to go off on. Now, we're just waiting patiently for when you remember why you were running. It's not a surprise that the Moore family - your family - would go after one of their own, but they don't do it without reason."
"I had to piss them off somehow," Miya chuckled. She looked over at the television. "Is it alright if I watch something with you?"
Asher nodded, happy for the change of subject. "Yes." He grabbed the remote and turned the television on. "What do you want to watch?"
Miya shrugged. She moved her body closer to his. "I don't know."
Asher smiled as a memory of Aubrey popped up in his mind. "I've got a show you might like." He turned on Housewives of Beverly Hills.
-----
Aubrey and Ezra stopped by a few days later to pick up Declan. While the two were saying hello to their baby boy, Asher searched the house for Miya. She had disappeared the moment that Aubrey and Ezra knocked on his door. He knocked on the bathroom door and heard a small voice call him in. He opened the door and saw Miya sitting with her knees up to her chest and her back against the cabinet. His chest filled with the sudden need to protect her. He's gotten to know her better in the past couple of days. He felt she was his, but he wasn't about to admit that to anyone. Asher closed the door and sat down next to her. "They're not scary."
Miya gave him a sharp look. "Yes, they are. He's your boss. The boss before him, whom he killed, worked with my family." Miya shook her head. "He doesn't want to see me."
"What did I tell you? He doesn't blame you for what your family has done." Asher wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her into his side. "Your family hurt you; you're not to blame."
Miya looked up at him and smiled at him. She let him help her up to her feet and followed him out of the bathroom. Asher noticed how she stood slightly behind him as they returned to the living room. Aubrey and Ezra were sitting on the ground, Aubrey holding Declan in her lap. Aubrey looked up at them and flashed a giant smile at them. She stood up, balancing Declan on her hip, and extended a hand toward Miya.
"You must be Miya," Aubrey smiled. "It's very lovely to meet you. I'm Aubrey, and this is my husband, Ezra."
Ezra took that moment and extended his hand for Miya to shake. Miya glanced over at Asher quickly before taking both of their hands and shaking them. "It's my pleasure to meet you both," Miya spoke politely. She folded her hands before her and moved, standing at Asher's side, still slightly behind him. "I've heard a lot about both of you."
Ezra smiled warmly at her. "You don't need to be so stiff, Miya. We know who you are, but you're safe here." He looked over at Asher. "I don't want either one of you to leave this house. Until your family is taken care of, I can't risk you being in danger outside this house." He raised an eyebrow at Asher before giving a soft look at Miya. "It'll only be temporary. I trust that Asher will keep you safe until the threat is gone." He wrapped an arm around Aubrey's shoulders. "We should get going; a lot needs to be done." He smiled at both of them before pushing Aubrey out of the door.
Asher closed the door behind them and turned around to look at Miya. "See? They're not scary."
Miya smiled at him. "Aubrey's intimidating."
Asher chuckled as he shook his head. "I guess she can be. Since we're stuck in this house for a while, what do you want to do?"
Miya motioned toward the bedroom. "I'm going to go take a little nap. Can you wake me up in an hour?"
Asher nodded as he watched her enter his bedroom and close the door. He needed a nap as well. He resorted to taking a quick nap on the couch, setting the alarm to wake them up.
----
The sound of his alarm jolted him awake. Sitting on the couch, he pressed the cancel button on his phone to silence the alarm. He rubbed his eyes before he stood up and staggered back to his room to wake Miya. He made sure to knock on the door before he opened it.
"What do you have there?" he asked quickly when he noticed what was in Miya's hands. She held one of his books. The ones that Aubrey caught him reading while she was here.
Miya looked up at him and gave him a devilish smile. She closed the book, held it to him, and showed him the cover. "This is a good book," she chuckled.
"Where did you find that?" Asher asked her as he moved towards her. He knew that he had hidden those books the other day. Aubrey had only known that he had read those books, and she had promised she wouldn't tell another soul. Those books were his dirty secrets.
Miya scooted back on the bed, away from him, as she waved the book around. "Is this your book?" Her face held pure amusement on it, her eyes shining.
Asher shook his head quickly. He walked around to where she was sitting and tried to grab the book from her hands, but she was quicker. She jumped off the bed and backed up toward the door.
Miya laughed as she continued to move toward the open door. "Really?" She opened the book's cover and read, "Property of Asher May. If found, please return to Asher May." She closed the cover and gave him a mischievous smile. "This is your book."
Asher's eyes snapped to the book and then to Miya's face. He slowly took steps toward her, hoping he would be quicker than her to grab the book. He silently hoped that she wasn't holding the annotated book. He lunged at her and wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her back against his chest. He reached out for the book, but she held it out. "Miya!" He growled as he picked her up and threw her on the bed, grabbing the book quickly before she could process what was happening. He leaned over her and shook the book. "Yes," he sighed. "I read this kind of book." He pointed the book at her. "If you tell a soul," he started.
Miya chuckled as she shook her head. "I won't tell anyone, Asher."
Asher gave a quick nod. "Good." He straightened and turned to the open door.
"Asher," Miya called out to him. Asher turned around and raised an eyebrow. She sat on her elbows and smiled at him; her eyes had darkened slightly. "You know what those books tell me?"
"What do they tell you?"
"That you know what you're doing," Miya smirked. "That you know how to please a woman."
Asher couldn't help the smirk and chuckled as he leaned against the frame. "Yeah? That's what this book tells you?"
Miya nodded. "It does."
