Chapter Four
Asher leaned against the wall next to his bedroom. Jammie had already picked up Declan, leaving Asher alone with this strange woman. He took out his phone and dialed Aden Warren's number. If anyone knew how to find information on anyone, it was Aden. Asher needed to see where this woman came from. He needed to know what had happened to her and who would want to hurt someone as small as she was.
The phone rang three times before Asher heard Aden answer, "Hello?"
"Aden," Asher answered gruffly into the phone. "I've got a favor to ask of you."
"What's the person's name?" Aden chuckled into the phone. "Doesn't even say hello."
"Miya," Asher answered as he stepped out of the house, leaned against the railing, and rolled his eyes. "That's the only name I have."
"What is this woman to you, Asher?" Aden asked him slowly. Asher can practically hear the smirk from Aden.
Asher shook his head as his eyes snapped over to the front door. "This woman showed up at my door last night covered in blood, Aden. She told me she was running from her family." He paused for a second before continuing. "Check my cameras to get a view of her."
"She hasn't given you any more information?" Asher could hear the sound of typing on the other side of the phone.
Asher shook his head. "No. Nothing." Asher sighed and ran a hand down his face. "She says she doesn't remember anything. She doesn't even remember coming to my house last night."
Silence was on the other side of the phone for a couple of seconds. "You didn't drug her, did you?"
"No!" Asher yelled into the phone. His eyes snapped up to the door as Miya walked through. "I've got to go." He hung up quickly before Aden could respond. He smiled at Miya. He noticed how she always held herself straight. She always met his eye and wouldn't look away until he did.
Miya tugged on the sleeves of the hoodie. "Are you sure you want to take me shopping?"
Asher nodded. "Yes." He held out his hand. "You can get whatever you want."
Miya returned the smile and looked at his hand. She hesitated for a split second before taking it. She let him lead her down the porch stairs and to the car. "You are a gentleman," she chuckled as he opened the passenger side door for him.
Asher smiled and chuckled. "That's who my father raised." He closed the door and walked over to the driver's side. Starting the car, he drove them downtown. At one time, he and his wife had come to shop here. It's been years since he had gone down the two-lane street. He almost wanted to turn around as his heart squeezed tightly in his chest, but when he saw the happy look on Miya's face, he decided against it. He decided right there that he would withstand any pain if it brought that smile onto her face.
"Where would you like to start?" he asked her as they parked on the street. He hurried to the other side and opened the passenger door for her.
Miya looked around and stopped at a small boutique a few windows down. "They look like they have cute clothes."
Asher motioned toward the door. "Okay. Lead the way." He followed her closely as they walked to the boutique. A massive wave of vanilla hit his nose as they walked through the doors. His eyes started to water at how strong the smell was. He shook his head as he controlled his senses.
A tall, skinny woman with dark brown hair jogged up to them and gave them a bright smile. "Welcome to Missy's. Are we looking for anything in particular?" She looked between Asher and Miya, her eyes landing on Miya.
Asher stepped up beside Miya and placed a hand on her shoulder. "Whatever she wants, she can have." He looked down at Miya. "Don't worry about the price. I'll be over sitting in the chairs when you're done."
Miya gave him a grateful smile. "Thank you."
Asher gave her a quick nod before turning around and finding a pair of fluffy chairs by the front window. He took out his phone and saw a missed message from Aden.
Call me.
This can't be good, he thought to himself. He quickly dialed Aden and waited for him to answer. It only took one ring before he heard Aden on the other side of the phone.
"You won't believe what I found out," Aden excitedly told him.
Asher couldn't help the chuckle that came out of his mouth. "That was quick."
"The woman that you are keeping is dangerous."
Asher's eyes snapped over to where Miya was standing. She was wearing a knee-length yellow dress. "She's dangerous," his voice deepened an octave.
Asher could hear Aden typing away on the computer. "Yes. Her entire family is dangerous."
"Who is her family?" he lowered his voice as Miya looked at him. She pointed to the dress as if gaining his approval. He forced a smile on his face and held a thumbs up. He did like the dress on her, but Aden's information was distracting him.
"Her full name is Miya Moore," Aden answered slowly. "Does that last name ring a bell?"
"Moore," Asher hissed out. He cursed as he shook his head. "Ezra had found in Jearon files papers about the Moore family. Jearon wanted to do horrible things with them. There were contracts with the head of the family's name waiting to be signed."
"They were thinking the other way around," Aden continued. "Your woman has white hair, correct?"
"Yes," Asher answered.
"Ever wondered why?"
"Sure, but I just thought she had dyed it," he shrugged.
"She was an experiment, Asher," Aden explained. "The Moore family wanted the ultimate killer. That's what she is. For years, she was their assassin for everything. She has more blood on her hands than you or Ezra do." Aden paused for a moment. "Poor woman. Horrible things were done to her to make her the way that she is, Asher."
Asher shook his head. He couldn't believe it. "She doesn't look like a killer." He watched as she twirled in a flowy white dress. She looked happy. "Are you sure you're looking at the right file?"
"I'm sending you a picture of her right now." Aden paused, letting Asher look at the picture through his phone. Asher cursed. It was her. The same bright blue eyes and starking white hair stared back at him. Instead of the happy eyes he had been looking at, these eyes were cold. Dangerous.
"Can you figure out why she ran?" Asher asked him.
Aden sighed. "I'll do my best, Asher. That will take a little longer."
"If you can, it would be much appreciated."
Aden paused momentarily, adding, "I know I don't have to say this, but be careful, Asher. You don't know who you're dealing with, and you don't know if her family is looking for her." He paused again. "Be careful."
"I will."
