Chapter Five
Asher placed the shopping bags in his car's trunk before walking to the driver's side. He got into the car and started the engine. He snuck a look over at Miya and couldn't help the smile that spread across his face. She was gushing over her new dress. The red dress fell to her knees, hugging her chest but flowy at the waist. Aden had to be wrong, Asher thought to himself. She can't be dangerous.
Miya snapped her head over to him, catching him looking at her. She smiled widely. "Thank you, Asher."
"You're welcome, Miya," he returned her smile and focused on the road. He decided to return to the house for dinner instead of stopping anywhere. He couldn't shake the feeling of being watched while he was around Miya. With her last name, someone had to be searching for her. The way she showed up at his doorstep covered in blood made him more paranoid than he would have liked to admit. He looked at her from the corner of his eye and sighed. "I know who your family is."
Miya looked over at him with wide eyes. "You do?" Her body tensed at his admission. Her hands curled against the hem of her dress.
Asher nodded as he turned down the long driveway. "Yes. I have a friend who's good at computers. I called him to see what he could find." He was stalling, telling her the truth.
Miya started to play with the hem of her dress, rubbing it between her fingers. "W-What did he find?" She turned her face away from him as they approached the front of the cabin.
Asher stopped the car and looked over at her. "Does the last name Moore sound familiar to you?"
Miya thought for a moment before slowly shaking her head. "That name doesn't sound familiar to me at all." She looked up at him; her mouth was turned down. "I promise you; I have no memory of that last name."
Asher reached forward and grabbed her hand. He squeezed it gently. "I know, Miya. Come on." He got out of the car before helping her out. "Let's take the bags and go inside. We'll finish the conversation there." His eyes looked around the dense forest around them.
Miya moved closer to him. "You don't think we're being watched, do you?"
Asher nodded. "I've had the strange feeling we were being watched in town." He looked down at her and smiled at her. "I'm a paranoid person, Miya. I constantly think someone's watching me." He wanted to comfort her. He didn't know why the sudden urge to protect her surged through his body, but he couldn't help but feel responsible for her.
She was his.
Miya gave him a small smile before taking some bags from the trunk and walking up to the house. Asher grabbed the rest and followed up after her. He didn't want to leave her alone. He wasn't afraid of her or what Aden had told him about her. He was fearful of who was following her. If she were who Aden said she was, someone would find her. Someone would want to see her and take her. He couldn't allow that.
Asher shut the front door and locked it. Jammie will be back after dinner with Declan. He needed to call Ezra but didn't want to disturb him on his honeymoon. He knew he needed to call Ezra but couldn't figure out how to tell him about this woman. Everything had finally settled down. Ezra had worked hard to soothe everything with the police over the past year. Ezra had taken Jearon's illegal habits and made them a functional legal business. Asher knew this woman would cause a rift in Ezra's plans, and Asher didn't want to be the one who gave him that news.
"What are you thinking about?" Miya asked him, bringing him out of his head.
Asher snapped his head up. He hadn't realized that he was standing in the doorway of his room. He chuckled lightly and placed the bags on the bed. "Nothing important."
Miya sat down on the bed and looked up at him. "Tell me about what your friend said." She reached into one of the bags and took out a sweater.
Asher watched as she gently folded the sweater before taking out another piece of clothing. "You're dangerous."
Miya snorted. "I highly doubt that." She looked up at Asher with laughing eyes. "I can't even remember my last name. How am I dangerous?" She held her arms out to her side. "I don't look dangerous."
Asher moved to stand in front of her and picked up a strand of her hair. "You don't want to know why you have white hair? It's not grey. It's white."
Miya shrugged her shoulders. "I thought that maybe I had dyed it."
Asher shook his head. "Your family, the Moore family, genetically designed you. You're their assassin. A perfect one, from what Aden found."
Miya shook her head. "I'm genetically designed?" She snorted again. "I'm sorry, Asher; you can understand why I don't believe you."
Asher nodded as he smiled. "I understand. I probably wouldn't believe you if you told me that information." He looked at the bags. "Are you hungry?" he asked, wishing to change the subject.
Miya nodded. "I am." She placed a hand on her stomach.
"Alright." Asher turned and walked toward the door. "Come out to the living room when you're done with the bags. I'll make a snack for us." He decided to call Ezra. He needed to. He decided to rip off the bandaid and call him. Asher waited until he was in the kitchen before he took out his phone and pressed Ezra's contact information.
Ezra picked up on the second ring, "Asher?"
"I'm sorry to interrupt your honeymoon, boss," Asher apologized.
"It's fine, Asher," Ezra chuckled. "What's going on?"
"I don't know if Aden has informed you, but a woman came to my door last night."
Ezra chuckled again. "Good for you, Asher."
Asher shook his head and snorted. "No. That's not what I meant." He looked around the corner. "She was covered in blood. I tried this morning to get information out of her, but she could only remember her first name. I had Aden look up her information, and she's part of the Moore family."
The silence was on the other side of the phone. Asher could hear doors being opened and closed. "The Moore family?" Ezra's voice was serious now.
Asher nodded. "Yes. She can't remember anything."
"What's her name, Asher?"
"Miya Moore."
"Keep her in that house, Asher," Ezra ordered. "Don't let her out of your sight. We'll be home in a couple of days."
"You know about her already?"
"Yes. If she truly doesn't remember who she is, she's harmless." He paused for a split second. "If she's lying to you, she's dangerous. Please keep her in your sights, Asher."
"Yes, boss. I'll see you when you get back home."
"I'll see you soon, Asher."
