Let The Race Begin
The chilled waters collided against my ankles, trying to pull my feet with it as it retreats back towards the horizon. The dark golden sand that had had been kissed by the waves had bonded with the pads of my feet as they guided me along the shore. Only lost footprints and forgotten sandcastles were left behind alongside the few seashells and debris scattered among them.
The warm golden rays of heat peeked over the horizon and hit my face giving me a bit of protection from the cool coastal breeze. My eye fluttered shut as I tilted my head up towards the rising sun, letting the warmth of the rays coat my face. I always came here early in the morning or late at night to clear my head and reflect. It was my place to come get away from the world and my problems for a couple minutes or hours or days, but that was back when my monsters inside were raging and eating me alive. This vacant little beach just a few blocks away from home was the place that I could find comfort and peace in.
I felt my phone buzzing repeatedly in my back pocket as my alarm clock went off signaling that it's almost time to get ready for school. I reluctantly turned away from beautiful view and dragged my feet along the sand back to reality. The streets were already filled with life of early bird joggers, people walking dogs, cars, and people in suits rushing to their 9 to 5. I walk with my head down the rest of the way home until I reached my block reluctantly dragging myself to my backdoor that I left unlocked and inside my house. My parents - that I have been trying to avoid - voice was the first thing I heard. I silently closed the door behind me and tried to tiptoe my way past them in the kitchen, but it seemed like the floorboards weren't playing along with me. I froze in my spot as they stopped talking hoping they didn't hear or that they just shrug it off as nothing.
"Rosalynn? Darling, is that you," My mother's soft spoken voice called out, her British accent still heavy and thick. I silently cursed under my breathe and fixed myself up to go meet with my parents.
"Yes, mother. It's me." I slowly walked into the kitchen to see my mom elegant as always, even when she has nowhere to go, with her her hair pined back and her pearls around her neck and a long black spring dress.
"There you are. Thought you were never going to get home," My dad joked in his casual laid back voice.
My parents are the complete opposite of each other. My mom is posh, elegant. high class. and came from a wealthy family in Britain. My dad on the hand is a fun loving, carefree, laid back city boy that came from a lower-income Haitian-Dominican family in New York. They met on a business trip in Australia 21 years ago and my dad told me at first she wanted nothing to do with him, but he sent a single white rose and a piece of caramel chocolate and a date idea everyday that whole 2 weeks to her hotel room until she finally said yes to a single date to him on the last day of the trip. The spent the entire morning together deciding last minute to bail on their flights home and stay together in Australia for another two weeks.
At the end of their extended stay, my dad convinced her to come with him back to America. Her parents were furious when she told them the news of meeting the love of her life. They couldn't believe she would go for a man who they believe was beneath her and they wouldn't let her come home. So, my parents went ahead and decided to get married anyway granting my mother citizenship, a long loving marriage and of course, me.
"Hey dad. Did you fix my car?" I tried not to sound too needy as I asked, but after what happened yesterday, I was desperate to have my car back.
"Yup, it's fixed and ready for the road," My dad chuckled. Leave it to my dad to laugh at himself.
I thanked him and excused myself while I sped to my room. I glanced at my clock and mentally thanked my decision to shower before I left earlier since I only had 20 minutes left. I threw on black joggers and navy blue v neck, then completed the look by pulling my hair up in a messy bun and stuck a mechanical pencil through it. I went out to my closet full of sneakers and picked out my black Jordans. Swinging my bag on my shoulders I rushed down the stairs and grabbing my keys as I screaming bye to my parents.
I started my car and did a mini happy dance, mentally thanking my dad again. A familiar sleek black Audi zoom past my house just as I started to back out my driveway nearly colliding with me. I put my car in gear and sped to catch up with the asshole behind the wheel to tell him off. A red light ahead presented my opportunity as I slowly rolled up alongside the car pretending not to notice him yet. A faint call of my name and a beep made my heart skip a beat as the excitement of what I was about to do kicked in.
"Fancy seeing you here." I greeted him sarcastically with a smug grin as I noticed him eyeing my car.
"That's your car?" Jacob looked at me impressed as he continued to checked out my baby.
"Yup, and I bet it's faster than yours." I joked with a smug smile hoping he would catch on to what I'm suggesting.
He shook his head and chuckled while he adjusted his mirror and shifted the gear. "That sounds like a challenge."
"Oh trust me, it is." I checked my mirror and placed my hand readily on the gear stick. I stared at the light anxious for it to turn green. I have an advantage on him. It's been a while since I've done this, but he doesn't know I had experience street racing and my adrenaline is pumping me up even more.
The light turned green and my foot immediately hit the gas. I didn't even look to see how far or close he was to me. I just focus on the road ahead dodging the few cars on the road, beating the red lights and staying in control of my turns. I glanced up at my mirror and saw him nowhere in sight. I checked my side mirrors to make sure of that and laugh to myself cause I knew I was winning.
That sucker probably got caught by the lights or the cops.
My self parade came crashing down when I saw his car drift out from an alleyway a block ahead of me. I quickly got over my shock and sped up going full speed past a yellow light which set off the flash of the street camera. I cursed myself under my breath thinking about the fit my parents are going to have about me speeding. I was nearly hitting 100 mph now, but I wasn't about to slow down.
I came side to side with his car just as the school parking lot came into view. I took a side glance at his car knowing we both can't go in at the same time at this speed without an accident happening especially with the other students going in, but I wasn't about to lose to him. My foot pressed harder on the gas just enough to pull ahead on him and I slowed down just enough to turn with him right on my ass.
I won buddy.
A few kids stopped to stare at us as we slowed down and pulled into one of the few empty parking spots near each other. I turned off my car and leaned back smiling to myself as I caught my breath before exiting my car. Jacob stood leaning on the trunk of his car staring at me with a look of shock and confused but a hint of impressed showed in his eyes."You never told me you raced."
"We're not friends, why would I?" I stated as I walked towards the entrance and Jacob quickly fell into step with me.
"We could be though." He suggested keeping his eyes on me.
"I think I'll pass. I'm good Jacob."
He shook his head and chuckled to himself."Of course."
A barely noticeable smile snuck on my face secretly liking the sound of his laugh that I caused. I took a peek at him from the corner of my eye and noticed he was still staring at me. "Take a picture buddy. It last longer."
"Your so different from other girls." He shook his head at me again and flashed me his award winning smile. I knitted my eyes together as I side-eyed him, not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing.
"Different is good," he added realizing my confusion. I relaxed my face and lowered my head to get my hair to fall to in my face to hide the fact that my cheeks may have been heating up a bit, then realized a second later that I had tied my hair up. I quickly turned my face away from him, hoping he isn't still looking at me knowing for sure my caramel skin is probably tomato red now.
"Well, wish I could say the same about you," I finally said with a fake apologetic smile. He seemed hurt at first but then the right corner of his lips rose in a small grin letting me know he didn't actually take me seriously. The warning bell beeped and it took me a second to realize that we had stopped at my locker. Lockers banged shut and 'goodbyes' and "I'll talk to you later" where the last words of parting friends as people began clearing out the hallways and the noise level died down.
I opened my locker and replaced my unnecessary books for the ones I needed. "Well, I better get going."
Jacob scratched the back of his head and looked around as if he totally ignored the bell and just realized it's time for class. "Yea, uhm see you in 8th." I nodded my head and slowly turned around. I could feel his eyes on my retreating and heard him laugh to himself as I turned the corner.
Maybe he's not so bad after all.

[Edited 11/24/2020] Soo Im getting pretty stuck, been going back and forth with what direction I want my stories to go in and since I did start these when I was young I definitly do want to shift them into more relatable (at least to me) and mature direction. You know like real problems and situations. More natural directions reactions and responses, in my head I wish it would go this way. I just want the transition t be smooth ya know. Enough of my babble though, hope you guys enjoy! Thank you for reading!
Love You Guys
